JJ is probably right about there being better out there than wanyama but as usual in these matters it will be a factor of price/availability, fits the system and prem proven.
From that list wanyama would fit the bill on all fronts unless poch and mitchell have something special on the black box of theirs that we dont know about yet.

Agreed. We all argued last year that there was better than Alderweireld out there (on paper there was), but sometimes players just step up or click with the right teammates. I'm confident Wanyama is one of them. He will always compete on athleticism which gives him a huge advantage over others. Plus he is 24 so time to develop.
Very happy if he comes in.

Im confident that if he signs for the club he will prove to be a wise aquisition.

And that's what could make Wanayama a great signing; Poch knows what he's getting and what his potential is.

Dier isn't a super star but you make a very good point - if Dier has a good tournament in an England shirt he will come back as a real superstar and this will surely have an impact on who we bring in (someone to rotate or cover not someone to force Dier back in the pecking order)

Why would that have an impact on who we would bring in? Dier doesn't need to prove himself in that way as Poch know what he stands for.

Really think Wanyana could be available for a bit of a low price as well, his contract is up in June 2017, so he only has 1 year left. Plus, with the probability of Koeman leaving, they will be in disarray and we could sneak in and pick him up for £10m-£11m I reckon. Anyone claiming that he will cost £25m is crazy.

Also, he is apparently known for his good leadership qualities (He does also captain his country) so he will have that strong winning attitude and the ability to calm players down and bang some heads together when shit hits the fan

Still wish we get the strikers sorted before we bring in other players. Couldn't be more urgent

It raises his status, his demand for potential buyers, his bargening position with our management etc

At this stage it's not unreasonable to believe we would be able to bring someone in with more experience who could potentially relegate him to second choice in his role so long as he got enough game time to keep him happy

If his profile is raised to another level (like Kane has been) it would be impossible to do that without rocking the boat significant (just as it would be with Kane now) and at this stage man/squad management and motivation is as important if not more important than our actual recuitment process

Indeed this will likely have no actual impact on who we sign and why as we would have most likely been looking to keep Dier as the first choice anyway and the guy coming in having to be the back up fighting for a sport

But if Dier does have a sensational tournament and becomes a superstar it somewhat forces our hand to do that and reduces our potential options as we'd be far less likely to be able to bring in an experienced/established superstar in his position and have any hope of keeping him happy and motivated at playing second fiddle

A reason I think Wanyama makes so much sense

Southampton have shown if nothing else that they know how to get top dollar for their players. That isn't going to change even if their manager leaves. When Pochettino left them they still got top dollar for those that left that summer. Daft to expect anything else this summer.

We've a bargaining chip in that ITK alluded to Southampton being one of 2 clubs after Mason.

Well if we're recruiting players on the basis of their human qualities we could do worse than the Dalai Lama up front providing competition to Kane & Aung San Suu Kyi in the DM role as back up to Dier.

They're both lovely.

And we should have signed Muhammed Ali after Dave MacKay retired

Is there any idea of cost though? Everyone saying he's good value? I've seen £20 million for what will essentially be Diers back up. Like him though and only 24. Has played a lot of games

Mate, who cares about his bloody price? That sort of stuff doesn't affect us in any way whatsoever.

Let Levy worry about the bloody finances & you just concentrate on supporting whoever's selected for the team each game.

Southampton will know who they want as their next coach. Les Reed will oversee any transfers in the interim period.

People weren't that excited over Alderweireld either and he was a revelation for us. At this point I trust poch 100% to identify our weaknesses and address with the perfect player.

Guilty!... I was concerned that he was made to look good (statistically speaking) because he had Schneiderlin & Wanyama in front of him, providing a very effective shield for the whole defence. However, he's come to us & proven to be an excellent bit of business.

So, if Pochettino, the guy who obviously chose Alderweireld, is actively chasing Wanyama, I think it's blatantly obvious we should all back his decision & give him the benefit of doubt?

People need to stop comparing Alderweireld to Wanyama. Alderweireld was phenomenal for Southampton the season before last. He had a wealth of experience winning trophies at Atletico and Ajax and previously formed a partnership with Vertonghen. He was a no brainer signing, which those of us who actually have tracked him over the years, stated clearly in numerous threads when debating his merits (What other CB, on paper, did people think was better last summer? I don't recall us seriously debating any alternative to Alderweireld. The detractors thinking was more along the lines of "we don't need him, as we have Dier").

Speaking as someone who watched Southampton a lot last season, Wanyama's performances were inconsistent. He was absolutely phenomenal against Arsenal when they bludgeoned them at home 4-0. But then, he'd put in performances against lesser teams that left a lot to be desired. He does have some great qualities, though. His strength and tackling ability are very good, and he's distribution with his left foot is very decent. I'd be content with him if other alternatives failed, but I agree with JJ that there are better players out there that could be available to us.

For what it's worth, Axel Witsel is probably a better comparison to Alderweireld, in that he has a lot of CL and national team experience, and wouldn't need much time to settle for us. He also has 1 year left on his contract and is looking for a move. He isn't the pure tackler Wanyama is, but he is much better going forward and is a more progressive passer.
