I didn't really want Alderweireld as I'd seen him not particularly impress me at Ajax or Atletico, and I am happy to admit I was drastically wrong. Hence if Poch, having worked with him before, feels Wanayama is what our squad requires then that's enough for me. You can't argue against Southamptons defensive record over the last few seasons with him playing DM

Plus, his ramen is to die for

People need to stop comparing Alderweireld to Wanyama. Alderweireld was phenomenal for Southampton the season before last. He had a wealth of experience winning trophies at Atletico and Ajax and previously formed a partnership with Vertonghen. He was a no brainer signing, which those of us who actually have tracked him over the years, stated clearly in numerous threads when debating his merits (What other CB, on paper, did people think was better last summer? I don't recall us seriously debating any alternative to Alderweireld. The detractors thinking was more along the lines of "we don't need him, as we have Dier").

Speaking as someone who watched Southampton a lot last season, Wanyama's performances were inconsistent. He was absolutely phenomenal against Arsenal when they bludgeoned them at home 4-0. But then, he'd put in performances against lesser teams that left a lot to be desired. He does have some great qualities, though. His strength and tackling ability are very good, and he's distribution with his left foot is very decent. I'd be content with him if other alternatives failed, but I agree with JJ that there are better players out there that could be available to us.

For what it's worth, Axel Witsel is probably a better comparison to Alderweireld, in that he has a lot of CL and national team experience, and wouldn't need much time to settle for us. He also has 1 year left on his contract and is looking for a move. He isn't the pure tackler Wanyama is, but he is much better going forward and is a more progressive passer.

I agree, but where did JJ say that ?

Still wish we get the strikers sorted before we bring in other players. Couldn't be more urgent

Doesn't work like that though does it. Deals get done when they get done. If we have a list of players they don't get put on a piece of paper and work on the deals one at a time in order of priority. Agents always hold everything up trying to get a slice of a slightly bigger pie.

I'm not gonna get wanyama printed on my shirt just yet.

in fact ever. too expensive. Pavlyuchenko nearly bankrupted me.

Ah Pav...how I miss that fella..just because of how popular he was. Listening to and joining in with 'Super...Super Pav" always put a smile on my face.

In the interests of not digressing from the topic at hand...I hope we sign a striker! Probably won't be until after the euros now but I think we will....surely!

Dortmund away was Poch clearly prioritising the league but also a subtle way of sending a message. Not being able to start half of our team in arguably our biggest European game in years said a lot about the squad. Especially after his comments about being able to compete in the CL too. Our gaps will be filled I'm sure, but there's no rush. We'd all like things sorted quickly but the last 2 years haven't been so bad in terms of on the pitch and also from a signings point of view. There's the usual "we will drop x number points if we don't sign y player by July etc" but let's just trust the guys and see what happens

One thing we should know as Spurs fans, what we percieve to be better, typically isn't.

All you have to do is go find the original Toby transfer rumour thread and read for yourselves, us, ITK's the lot had him written off as slow and much better out there.

Trust in Poch!

but that would be the case no matter who you have playing for you. Short of being Real Madrid the back up options are always going to be of a lesser quality. The bulk of our first XI would still have played in only one game, because of how close those two huge games were to each other. Yes we could have had better quality back ups, but many fans would still have been unhappy that one was prioritised over the other.

hughton on coys: I just text my man as I didn't need to put a work related call in, he replied saying 'The official line is no comment' with a winking emoji.
Pretty much confirms it as far as I can see.
This guy is as high as I can speak to in Nike and whilst he doesn't work in the marketing end of the business, he's responsible for team sales in the UK and works very closely with the department looking after deals like this. If he says it's done, it's done.

That's great news. He's pretty much just outed his mate though.

I agree but the disparity of the back ups was the problem. Onomah shouldn't have been even in consideration for such as huge game with such little experience and Chadli as a striker should never be considered again
