I supported England in World Cup 90 in Italy. Since then I haven`t found much pleasure in watching England (with a few exceptions). If we think about the size of your country, your football league, your general physics as average western europeans with also lots of muscular afro-british citizens, your sports fascilities etc., there`s no logical reason why England have a poor team compared to Germany, Italy, France, Holland, Belgium or Spain.

Especially compared to Holland and Belgium it`s a mystery why you don`t achieve more on the pitch with that players and team.

Yes you're right about most of it, also lets hope Holland go further in the tournament... oh wait its also the first time belgium have qualified for a Euros since 2000 and now they have at least 5 world class players..

But you said get the best manager we can. That ain't Hiddink, not by a long way. Didn't he play a large part in the dutch failing to get out of their group?

The only English candidate with any real (footballing) credibility is Hoddle, but that's very unlikely, that would mean the FA actually showing some sense. If we go English, which IIRC is how the FA prefer to roll, then our next manager is probably going to be someone very underwhelming. Fat Sam, Pardew, someone like that.

Personally i'd go with Hoddle with Southgate alongside him with a view to him taking over in four years.

It won't be Hoddle (as much as I agree that would make sense).

It'll be Southgate who is woefully under qualified and will no doubt be cast on the scrap heap in 2 or 4 years time.

Hiddink for me, knows the PL and isn't afraid of being parachuted into a shit storm (see Chelsea x 2).

I learnt it all from you. :)

You genuinely have a problem with the Celtic nations though (and particularly the Welsh) I feel sorry for you. I just have a sporting hatred for the English rugby team for what they represent.

Also, think it's mildly offensive to say home nation is a misnomer when many Scots, Welsh and Irish gave their lives for us and the rest of the U.K. During the wars. But hey, you stay classy mate.

It's not often you hear any of the celts say anything positive though? Even if England are decent, unlike the shit shower yesterday. Although, I sort of get it. It's normally good natured.

Wrong thread, but if you are into hating English rugby, that's not going to improve for you in the immediate future. They were literally epic down under. Which you should see as positive, at least for Northern hemisphere rugby, which has been dross for a couple of years.

It's the stuck up aspect I think. The self loving arrogance that seeps down from the traditional roots of union, from the class system. It's dying out though and now they are a very good side on merit.

Though I'm quite happy for our boys to have a rest I must say I'm disappointed, not by England getting KO by Iceland, but by the manner in which they lost.

I don't rate Roy but you'd have thought the least he could do was Instill some kind of passion/belief into a very young exciting group of players.

I actually think there are parallels between the English rugby team and the football team. The rugby team, under Lancaster, lacked the right mentality but also he didn't really know what his best 11/ system was and now look at them. If England get the right replacement I think they'll be right up there with this group of players. I don't think English football is in the mess some say it is. It's largely owl faces fault.

Do I? I'm not aware of that. Ive worked with great people from across the UK, especially from Wales (in a govt department) , believe it or not. And from Scotland too.

There are many tensions - some big, some less so - at the heart of the UK, I think. If I choose not to support the other British nations at sporting events, then it's hardly uncommon. Look at the level of support for England in Scotland, or your hatred of English rugby and your disdain for its fans. I don't hate anyone btw and I'm not sure why you would be bothered that I don't much care how Wales get on at football. I suspect that there would be some people who would feel patronised and irritated if i were to get behind Wales as an Englishman.

People are free to move around the UK and that's fine by me. We've all added a lot to each other in our long shared histories. I have a Scottish surname and i dare say at least some of my family came from there at some point. So there you are. I'm quite British in many ways, just not when it comes to sport. Like lots of people from all over Britain.

Fair enough. While sport is important it shouldn't be taken to seriously as there are many more important things in life. I must've misinterpreted your posts to relate to non sporting things for that I apologise.

Please no Southgate. He is another Stuart Pearce or Kevin Keegan. Hoddle would be great and has done it before at the World Cup.

Hodgson's name is going to go down in infamy I think. If he takes another club job in England i'll be surprised, he'd be roundly booed and abused pretty much every game. I think he's finished which I guess isn't a hard conclusion to reach.
He looked like a defeated man after the game. Obviously he was a defeated man but he didn't really looked surprised.
