33mill is not and never will be chicken feed for spurs, we don't have a bottomless pit of dirty money to call upon.

The club is run properly, money matters as like in any type of successful business.

meaning a healthy profit margin to ENIC and the rest goes to pay for the stadium 100% owned by ENIC.
Sometimes I am not really sure why I bother being a football fan.

It's amazing to see how everyone on this thread now thinks Batshuayi isn't remotely good enough for us and is so concerned about the financial outlay. We spent 33 million pounds on Njie and Son, neither of whom was a guaranteed starter last summer, and NO ONE here harped on and on about what a massive financial risk it was signing these guys and giving them multi-year contracts. Even after both of them had disappointing first seasons, there is little talk about what poor value they were for the money spent and instead everyone is stressing patience and certain they'll come good, even though neither one will likely be more than a cup rotation player in the coming season if all are healthy.

The simple fact of the matter is that Batshuayi fit a very specific need for us (go back many months here and see the numerous posts I've made about him, for those of you who are adamant that very few here even have seen him play). One of the best goal scorers from the bench in Europe (9 in 20 the last two seasons for Marseille), has played for the manager who more or less created Pochettino's high pressing, vertical passing footballing system, knows 4 key members of our squad, has the ability to play as a wing forward if needed, and has the pace and power to get in behind defenders and hold the ball up as a lone striker. If it was possible to have signed Batshuayi earlier in June for the mooted 28 million pounds, then I believe we should have done so.

The other two options don't share those aforementioned positive characteristics. Sanabria scored 8 of his 11 goals last season in 3 games. The bottom teams in La Liga play openly and playing somewhere like Asturias carries with it very little pressure to perform. The move to England for him would be a massive culture shock (if you want a striker from Spain, we'd be better off going for Borja Baston). Janssen had a great season in the Eredevisie and could be a decent buy if he got lots of game time, but I worry he will struggle to make an impact as a substitute in this league where they don't give you anywhere near the space as they do in Holland. He also isn't particularly pacey, can't play as a wing forward, and there will be an adjustment moving to a new country with teammates he doesn't know.

Ultimately, the proof will come during the season. I had high hopes that we'd also sign a high level attacking midfielder like Boufal on top of a Batshuayi, but given how reticent we are to pay any kind of major fee, I suspect that's out the door entirely (I predict we'll sign Yunus Malli if we sign a third player this summer, as he is very cheap in the current mark with a 7 million pound release clause and very low wages).

Batshuayi would have been a good fit in some ways and not in others. As soon as his price and wages began to spiral a few major problems began to arise. Would he sit on the bench, would other players want more money, how would you split game time between him and Kane? If had stayed at around 20-25m and 40-50k wages he would have been a much bigger loss. In view of the way things have panned out I'll be more than happy with Janssen (and Malli for that matter).

Wanting a healthy profit margin, like any business that has ever existed?

Additionally, the point about national team squads is such a cherry picking argument. Plenty of posters state that they prefer Wimmer to Vertonghen, the former struggling with breaking into Austria's team, the latter being a hands down starter in a highly competitive Belgian team. Which is it, do we believe in our own judgement more than national coaches, or do we decide on our opinions based on the decisions of national coaches?

But not in his preferred/natural position...

.

But also a player who presumably wants to be a regular starter rather than a substitute, in order to improve his standing with the national team.
We could go over the second bit many, many times. We don't know the ins and outs of the talks that took place. What seems to be coming out is that he/his agent want bigger wages than we are willing to offer. We also don't know for certain that Marseille were willing to do the deal, which is why it has dragged out this long and he's gone for more money elsewhere.
Levy would do to same thing if we were offloading one of our players.

Sorry, who is Yunus Malli, have we had any ITK on him?

This is not any business but football, where you have to rely on fanbase support to generate profit. What they charge for tickets (especially Spurs) and TV rights is outrageous. It is almost verging on corporate donations. Naturally fans reserve right to demand more investments when the club has the ability to make higher expenditure instead of pocketing majority of it as investment return.

You take this stuff too seriously :D

Yeah right :woot:

I promise you I don't take it too seriously, I just get bored of recurring jokes. It's only funny for a while and then it's like ok, we get it, you hate Levy. Yawn.

I'm genuinely not in either camp. There have been plenty of times when I've wanted Levy to just fuck off but equally I can now see that he's trying to right previous wrongs. I'm not one to hold a grudge.

No I agree with that, just saying that we aren't any different to most it not all premier league club owners. I agree it would be great if there was more fan involvement like Germany.

Then we can compare to other PL clubs. We are probably the 6th biggest club in PL, so naturally it's fair that we can/may expect the 6th biggest transfer investment in PL. Looking at our transfer expenditure (net amount), that's not what's happening. So where goes the profit? (besides the privately-owned stadium which is supposed to have a separate budget anyway)

1. bargains flop, and we've had a LOT flop. (they are bargains most of the time because of quality)
2. not sure what you mean by the manager being on board with this when it was the manager who wanted Michy?

1. No such thing as a sure thing but you must be able to see the difference between a cheap flop and an expensive one?

2. Poch has said many times he is happy to work with the squad and understands the financial constraints.
