Usually it happens on the last day. Someone will think fuck it i'll take a ban because its the last day, give it large and suffer the consequences. Then, on the day this forum re-opens I get a PM asking to be reinstated. My laughter lasts long time GI, long time.

I was responding to your original one liner which was totally incorrect. I reminded you there are varying degrees of risk, and types of risk.

You've simply picked up on the size of transfer fee, which is but one aspect.

In buying Soldado, the Club failed to see he was unsuited to a lone striker role in the prem, lacking physicality as he does. Also, under avb, possession pushed the opposition back, there was no space in behind and we had no one supplying those sharp near post crosses he thrived on in Spain. Looking at the big picture, the risks were not properly evaluated.

The Club needs to do better than throw ten mill each summer at a random, young french African wide men. These signings feel like a punt, throw enough darts at the board and one might stick. our squad is stacked with am s and I'd rather we abandon this type of signing and instead focus on buying more established quality. Of course every decision represents some kind of risk but to bring you back to where we started all risks need to be properly evaluated. Not just the fee.

Surely the essence of sport works on not being able to fully determine the reward derived from a signing, risk or no risk. Otherwise the top teams would just go straight in and cherry pick players knowing that they will be success stories. Look at the NFL draft system, rarely do the top 30 odd picks simply turn out to be the top 30 players at the end of the season.
Leicester, West Ham and even ourselves have done pretty well out of Kante, Mahrez, Payet, Dier and Alli!!! But I bet all three teams would have shelved some of those signings if a 'name' player had cropped up.

Well hopefully Lilbaz gets a pass for an outrageously funny post. If I remember correctly, pictures were banned from this thread to help with loading times as once upon a time the daily thread would actually be daily and run up to 70 odd pages PER DAY ! Given that there's the square route of fuck all going on just now, I say it was worth the risk ;-)

Transfer business done at Spurs by mid-July?! Fuck yeah, about bloody time.

Sick of seeing us drop precious points in August because we're busy pussyfooting around a targeted player or two. How many recent seasons have we finished a point or thereabouts behind Arsenal, and they've ended the half-month of the season that is August with 4-7 more points than us? We got the guys in Poch clearly wanted, they're in the thick of preseason with the rest of the squad, and they'll all be ready to go on what - *gasp!* - opening day of the season!

Sure I'd like another needed pacey player, but to hell with it if we're going into August yet again with the blatantly obvious mindset of "still settling and waiting for additions." I want no more of the perennial mental weakness which persists at the club, let's strike it out one excuse at a time. All aboard, shut that damn door, and full steam towards opening day. COYS.

Of course risks in signing players, or blooding youth players for that matter cannot be eliminated but they can be managed to an extent.

moreover in team sport in particular you dont just have individual talent, but team dynamic, coaching and tactics, injuries and fitness factors, and the who performs on the day... perhaps the officials and the crowd and other environmental factors too. Thats the essence of football and why im still a fan.

Our evaluation of potential signings under Mitchell and Poch is reportedly very thorough, and they are getting much more right than wrong. Clinton may be an exception. Looks like hes being harshly judged but we dont know the details do we? It will be hard for the new lad to make an immediate impression, too. Lets see.

I dont think these guys would have made the mistake of signing Soldado either, incidentally.

That Britinva likes spam don't they?

I like the idea of that our incoming transfers are done barring something exceptional falling into our laps. Get things done early and fill the gaps in the squad which is something we have done early and at good prices.

Because a DM, striker and LW who will all either be on the bench or not in the 18 to start the year is the difference between getting all 3 points or dropping points. We're not signing anyone to improve the first XI this summer and last summer, the only additions made to the first XI were Alli and Alderweireld. Both of which were done way before August. I got news for you, when we dropped points last summer it wasnt because we didnt get transfers done.

And when(if) we drop points that we should have won max points on this summer, it will be because we just werent good enough or we didnt set up correctly.

I still think we need a little genius in one of the AM 3 , someone who can dribble from a standing start or in tight spaces around the box like Coutinho. We don't really have players of this type at all, and it would really help against teams who park the bus.
