L’Equipe seem to love the atmosphere around English football. Whether that be FA Cup games, or stories from ordinary fans going to matches, there’s something about the Premier League which makes it more than just the veneer of money.

At the moment the French newspaper are doing features on stadiums and on Wednesday it’s the turn of Tottenham Hotspur and White Hart Lane. With another old English ground being replaced by a new stadium, Tottenham have insisted to L’Equipe that their new ground will have an advantage over Arsenal and the Emirates.

Tottenham’s Donna-Maria Cullen was asked for comment, and told L’Equipe: “The atmosphere of an enclosure depends very much on its architecture. We work to optimise that in the new stadium, working especially with the team that manages the acoustics of U2 concerts.
“That is why, for example, the corners of the stadium will be closed, unlike the Emirates. In addition, we insisted to the that architects that the stands be close, as at White Hart Lane. In our stadium, the pitch will be five metres closer to the fans than it is at the Emirates.”

The repeated references to Arsenal are no accident, explain L’Equipe, because Tottenham have seen how the Emirates has lost out on atmosphere. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will surely have preferred that the old Highbury atmosphere had been transferred, and that’s what Tottenham are trying to do for Mauricio Pochettino.

Outside of the stadium, Tottenham have been working on stability, with some of the recent contract extensions including Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris. It’s going to be a turbulent time as Tottenham go through the move whilst trying to retain their past, having Pochettino’s stars all tied up on long deals is a very smart way of managing what can be controlled.

Arsenal’s move to the Emirates hasn’t been a disaster by any means, but Tottenham are keen to learn from the mistakes of their rivals and provide Pochettino with a more fiery atmosphere than what Wenger has at the Emirates.

the atmosphere will only be good if the people that make the effort now are all in 1 place, and the rest of the stadium makes more of an effort. yes I agree that the players will need to help get bums off seats and raise the voices, but sometimes the crowd being the 12th man instead of discussing what happened in East Enders, gives the players the lift they need

From the overlayed plans of the haemorrhoids and the new WHL, three sides will be the same distance from the pitch, only the south stand lop will be closer than any of the haemorrhoids stands!!

Are you sure, I can't say for definite but I seem to recall ours being closer, certainly due to the steeply rising stands after the first row all the other rows will be closer than the corresponding rows at the emirates.

From http://m.tottenhamhotspur.com/new-scheme/faqs/

Q: What is the distance of each stand from the pitch? How does this compare with other new stadiums in the UK?

A: The new stadium has been designed to bring fans closer to the pitch that at any other modern stadium in the country. The first row of seats will be less than 8 metres from the touchline all the way around the ground – even closer for our singe-tier ‘home end’ which will be under 6 metres – compared with over 12 metres at the City of Manchester Stadium, over 13 metres at the Emirates Stadium and 18 metres at Wembley National Stadium.

Looks like the Kop end will be nearer the pitch than the other end. Should help ramp up the atmosphere a bit and make the home fans have even more impact than the away fans. Every little bit of an advantage should help!

Talking of atmosphere, just watching the old firm derby, what an atmosphere, Spurs fans should use those games as a yardstick for the new WHL (y)

Its all about making sure the Park Lane end move together into the new south stand. Fans who make noise in the Paxton and Shelf need to be moved into the same areas in the new stands as well. It needs to be an intimidating atmosphere from match one. Not spend months/years trying to recreate an atmosphere like the Gooners and Spammers have had to do. I really hope we're on top of this.

Are our fans too middle class to generate passion like working class Glaswegians?

Well I'm 50, working class and i still scream, shout and sing on the very odd occasion i get to go down the lane, so i don't see why there would be a problem in derbies and other big games, we've lifted the roof many times in the not too distant past!

Agree, we must keep the shelf lads in the corner by Park Lane and Park Lane fans together.

To keep us together it would require a bit of planning. The club seems to be very much focused on the selling of very expensive corporate style packages right now. I just hope that when the selling of the kop season tickets starts, its offered to the current Park Lane and Shelf siders who make the noise today first. If the club then announced the remainder as singing/atmosphere creating areas, you might get the right people together from day one. Otherwise it can take generations for these people to get together naturally as West Ham and Arsenal are finding out. I can remember when the Paxton was as loud as the Park Lane, what happened?

Not living in the UK I rarely get to go these days, but I think it would be better to have all the singers in the kop end so that it generates a complete wall of sound to drown out the opposing fans.

If they're smart about it they'll use Wembley as a way of getting all the right groups of fans together then try to transfer all of those over to the New White Hart Lane as well as Park Lane/Shelf groups.

Although a season a Wembley gives me the willies TBH, did them lot up the road play their league games at Wembley or just CL?

Key is we can't go into the 1st game at the new lane and have it feeling like a neutral ground. Perhaps have all our pre-season friendlies there would help although i don't know if that'll be possible.
