Sessegnon really seems like the ticket here. Would be a big step up for him and learning behind Rose while getting the opportunity in cup matches makes a lot of sense.

2 and a half years ago a lot of fans were writing Rose off, then Poch got his hands on him and Danny improved immensely.

Shaw is only 21, if he was happy to come here and be Rose's backup I'd take it. Then the games where Rose is rested/suspended we wouldn't lose that attacking threat on the left.

Wouldn't mind Sessegnon either though.

don't think man utd would deal with us and his injury is another issue

Why would we want a player from a worse team than us who is worse than the players we have already in the position. He's not better than Rose or Davies. Even in his season at Southampton before he moved to Man Utd I thought he was good but nothing more.

Yet again a player takes a move (and money) that was too big for him rather than stay and develop at a club that would be better for them.

If we're looking at an 'ex' Saints player, I'd prefer we sign Fonte as cover and depth whilst Verts is out. Shaw, big wages, won't be happy as a back up, Davies already very capable of stepping in.

What on earth would we need Fonte for. We already have Wimmer, Carter-Vickers, Davies and Dier all able to cover CB.

You can't cover an injured player with someone already in the starting 11, without making an alteration to the team elsewhere. And as were playing some decent stuff at the moment I'd be very reluctant to make other changes. Dier hasn't played as well as part of a back 4 anyway and the wing backs have been awesome. Wimmer and C-V are there yes, and Wimmer will likely step in. But then all of a sudden we're pretty thin. Poch would know Fonte well and he would add some Euro winning experience on a short 2 year contract deal id wager.

Not for me. It took us years to offload all our deadwood that never played. Fonte would be exactly that. He'd never get a game.

Don't understand your reasoning at all. Dier is mainly a midfielder these days although he has been playing really well in the back 3. We have Wimmer, CCV and Davies all very capable of covering Vertonghen, and if we had enough injury problems to run short of cover with that lot it would be a totally freak situation. We don't have masses to spend and there are a couple of areas in far greater need of bolstering than CB. Add to that that Fonte will be looking for a 'pay day' deal and it's a non starter IMO.

Luke Shaw is a fantastic prospect and when he has had a run of games his talent has been clear for all to see. The obvious issues are fitness, transfer fee, wages and squad status.

These last two seasons Danny has been utterly brilliant so you could only consider Shaw as an understudy if we keep Danny. Will Shaw develop into a top class player, particular in a wing back role as opposed to a full back role (of course who knows how our formation will evolve) - time will tell.

Not for me. Don't think Shaw's got the right mentality for a top 4 team who compete regularly for league titles. He should stay where he is, at a top 6 team, and if he wins his place back and performs well then he might be ready to step up.

If he's available, he would be a fantastic buy but not necessarily for us. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that there's bugger all benefit to anyone in Shaw sitting on our bench instead of United's.
Surely, if Jose won't play him, he should go loan to get match fit and overcome his injuries like Wheelchair.
To me this is sloppy journalism based on the Southampton connection because out of all the top 6 we are best placed at left back. I could see Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Liverpool all having more interest in Shaw than us.

The only thing that gives this legs for me is if we intend to use Davies as a rotation player at LCB and have Shaw rotating with Rose at LWB. That said, we have Certs and Wimmer in that role already so I don't think it'll happen but if it did, that's the only way I see it working.

Might as well recall Fazio than waste our time with Fonte

Shit, we just missed out as he's signed for West Ham today :)

With Westham's signing of Fonte, I hope Saints keep hold of van Dijk during this window. Don't want any of the other top six teams (with weak defences) getting him to strengthen their defence for the remaining part of the season.
