Weve got good players all over the pitch, but if I had to pick where we could improve, Id say in the attacking midfield position.

Bale, Lennon and VDV ripped teams apart. We need runners that can score goals to feed of eriksen or alli

I think he just needs game time. Its hard to come in and be straight up to speed. I thought second half against Monaco he looked really good. Last night he made some sloppy errors but I'd attribute that to changing out too many first team players. As with the rest of the squad if better is out there I wouldn't be against a swap.

He comes too narrow. We need to be really clever this season with what combination of full backs we play because there is a large gulf in class between Walker/Rose and Trippier/Davies.

That's not to say I don't trust the second pair at all but, if it were down to me, I would be resting the first two in home games against weaker opposition rather than rotating whenever we have two games in a week (which, to be fair, worked last season).

Davies was great going forward last season, but it has looked like he's been told to be a bit more restrained in some of his outings this year. Especially against CSKA, where it was quite obvious that he wasn't supposed to run beyond Son, but offer a safe passing option and not leave space to counter in.

Which enevitably leads to some people moaning about him being a centre back.

I've got a feeling that if he doesn't start regularly in the league for us this season (and I suspect he won't) he will want to leave at the end of the season. He's a Welsh international and I'm sure he wants to play the big matches against the big teams. If he can't do it here he'll want to do it somewhere else.

I agree he didn't have a good game. But IMO he was played out of position. He is a DL, or the Center left if playing in a back 3. He isn't a wing back, he is a much more defensive player then Rose. Who we all know was a left winger when he started.

thought he tried, and I think I would rather he stay as back up to Toby if we are sticking with 5-2-2-1 (or 3-4-2-1 or 3-2-2-2-1). That the position he excels in.

Think we shouldn't be too too harsh on a player who is played out of position.

He was the player I have 'adopted' over the past 2 seasons because I thought he was unfairly criticised by the fans just because he isn't Rose. I still think he's a good LB but I think we may need to replace him for a quicker LB for when we play 3 at the back.

I feel sorry for him, because he wasn't signed with the purpose of playing LWB. After a fairly solid season last year when called upon, he's found it difficult recently when asked to adapt to our current style. Not his fault, and he certainly isn't a bad LB, just one who will find it very difficult being at a club who clearly don't suit his style.

With Dier's current form and Poch's reluctance to play Wimmer I wouldn't be at all opposed to playing him, Jan and Toby in a back 3 when Rose is back however.

if we play 3-5-2 we should play George as LWB in the absence of Rose , together with Walker as LWB

If we play 4-2-3-1 we should play Davis and Trippier

It gives us more balance this way

Never understood the signing, been saying since he signed that I wouldn't mind selling him, thought he was pushed on us because we really wanted Vorm, can't imagine why we wouldn't find a more versatile back up LB to suit our various systems better and generally think he is disposable.

We weren't playing the way we are now when we bought him

he too predictable. I could have defended against him last night his crossing is from too far back and he cant take on a player. he goes backward or infield too often and as soon as son came on (until he decided to move across the field.) we instantly looked more dangerous. This isn't knee jerk. and he is ample as backup but we have moved on.

The problem with Davies imo isnt so much that he isnt suited to playing LWB, thats no surprise. Hes never been famed for his physical abilities, or his intent to drive forward etc and was purchased as a prospect after having a good solid season at LB for Swansea.

Ben is a solid defensive LB, but that is literally it. The moment he has to overlap and look to attack is where it all unravels for him. He's too easy to defend against and is too easy to attack. There was a couple of times last night for example where Moses ran him from the half way line right back to the edge of our box and he was on the back foot the entire time. He lacks that intensity in his game.

I think he'll have a very good Premier league career and will go on to be highly thought of elsewhere. Decent, honest player that Tottenham Hotspur have simply outgrown.

That is true. You are right. And since we bought him, Rose has especially advanced in abilities Davies simply does not have.

I think that's the crux of it tbh. Davies would look far better in a side where he does not have to provide the width for attacking purpose. Rose I think would look far less of a player if you restricted his forward play. He'll do well elsewhere but he just doesn't fit in our set up now where as Rose epitomises it.

Oh, by all means, I do not mean to come across as thinking that Davies is a bad footballer in absolute terms. On the contrary, he plays for a national team of some recent, moderat success. However, I almost feel a bit sad for him, he is wasted with us. Would fit in well at several upper-half PL clubs.
