I thought I'd share with you all the outcomes of a conversation I was having with a Goon about Mesut Ozil yesterday. He was banging on about him being World Class and how Arsenal should 'break the bank' to get him tied down to a new deal.

My thoughts on him have been that he's been a huge disappointment since he's been there. I suggested that we compare stats v Eriksen who cost £30m less so we started digging around for his PL goals and assists record since they signed in 2013. Here's what we found....

Ozil
Season/Games/Goals/Assists
13/14 - 26/5/9
14/15 - 22/4/5
15/16 - 35/6/19 (16 of the 19 came between Aug 15 to Dec 15)
16/17 - 33/8/9
17/18 - 26/4/8
18/19 - 24/5/2
Tot - 165/32/52

Eriksen
Season/Games/Goals/Assists
13/14 - 25/7/8
14/15 - 38/10/2
15/16 - 35/6/13
16/17 - 36/8/15
17/18 - 37/10/10
18/19 - 38/8/12
Tot - 209/39/60

* updated As of 1/6/18

After our digging, we found that not only did we establish Eriksen was statistically better, we also established that Ozil was only 'world class' for period of just over 4 months. Nearly half of his assists for Arsenal occurred in that period.

Anyway, I thought I'd share. Source links below.

I was always a massive fan of ozil until he went there. Really thought he was a special player but I think he's under delivered there as your post shows.

If he was at THFC he'd be in the starting XI and be a better player for us if he knuckled down, I've no doubt about that. The manager wouldn't let him get away with the shit he does at Arsenal.

It's a shame that two of our players have a song mentioning Ozil when they are both on a different level right now and he doesn't deserve to be mentioned, or even remembered!

Eriksen has been better this season and I suspect under Poch's tutelage he will become one of the best no10's in the world consistently, Ozil is being mismanaged by Wenger to the point where he is starting to stagnate.

Ozil had a higher profile than Eriksen when they came to England
and I would have welcomed Ozil at the time.
Not surprising as he is 3yrs older and more established coming from Real Madrid.
But wouldn't swap Eriksen for almost anybody now.
Integral to the team
Still progressing whilst Ozil has peaked and got a little stale.
Still a fine player though
just not as good as Christian under Mauricio

Those stats highlight the emergence of Kanr/Alli/Son too. Increase in Assists as they put away more chances.

While I agree Ozil only excels for part of the season, the same can be said of Eriksen. Ozil starts the seasons really well and then tales off. Eriksen is the reverse. Lets not forget how poor he was at the start when people were questioning whether he was worth his new contract. Same thing happened last year and the year before that. It's only really been since the turn of the year that Eriksen has been consistently outstanding.

I am biased of course but I think Eriksen is the better player and I have long held that view. Ozil may have flashes of brilliance but Eriksen is tactically far more disciplined without the ball and two are comparable on it. Add to that the fact Eriksen is on half the wages, younger and cost a lot less, we got the better deal.

To be fair there's not much in the stats until this season. Eriksen has certainly been the bigger success, but to be fair to Özil you have to mention chances created. Arsenal's strikers have been so poor - if they had someone decent up top I'd imagine his assists would be much, much higher.

Last season he created 144 chances (a premier league record) yet the conversion rating was only around 4%. This season he has only created 59 compared to Eriksen's 79 though, albeit in 500 less minutes.

Ozil wants 300k a week and there were spurs fans on twitter calling Eriksen greedy for wanting 100k!

You mean like Sanzhez who's played the majority of their matches as a striker...k then.

There are many comparisons between the two but things that stand out to me are that He's our no.23. He also came to play for AVB. Some might say he's our midfield dynamite and when he plays for us some have said he's capable of making Ozil looking shite.

So I heard.

Christian Eriksen is the single most under-appreciated and underrated player in the Premier League. And I don't just mean by the general public and pundits (although he is), but he's also the player most under-appreciated by his own fans.

He completely transforms our team. We border on being creatively insipid when he's not there. All the attention and plaudits go to Kane and Alli, but they couldn't do what they do if they didn't have Eriksen supporting them, pulling the strings, creating and exploiting space.

On of the members on the Tottenham Way podcast said that he needed to score from outside the box more often. Yet he's scored more goals outside from outside the box than anyone in the league since his debut. It's regularly lamented that he's not 'world class,' despite significantly outperforming players who are given that accolade by the same people season after season.

He is a sublime, brilliant and all round special footballer.
