Tottenham will keep their best players this summer and only sell those who are no longer wanted by the club, says manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs sit second in the Premier League, with a number of teams said to be interested in their top players.

But Pochettino says he has a close relationship with chairman Daniel Levy, who has assured him the club will not sell as they "don't need the money".

"The players that we want to keep, we will keep," he said.

Defenders Kyle Walker and Danny Rose and midfielders Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli are among those to have recently been linked with moves away from White Hart Lane.

"I think because we are doing good things, the clubs with a lot of potential are focused on our players, on our talented players," added the 45-year-old Argentine.

"But the good thing is we have the plan to try to improve and we will deliver it when we finish the season.

"For our fans, it is so clear that all the decisions we take are for the reason to try to improve the team, to try to be more competitive next season."

Former Spain midfielder Xavi said this week that 21-year-old Alli is the kind of talent his previous manager at Barcelona, Pep Guardiola, would be keen to sign for Manchester City.

"I don't know what Xavi said - is he working for Manchester City now? He wants to help Guardiola," added former Espanyol boss Pochettino.

This has been the line I have been hearing for the last 18 months or so, Poch will get the final decision on all in's and outs, the players we want to keep and believe in what we are doing will not be sold.

Expect journalists to exaggerate and twist every word spoken in order to make a story. If that doesn't work expect some of them to make stuff up completely as they contort 3 year old quotes into a modern day occurrence. This is going to be a long summer, but I have every belief Poch and Levy will hold firm to what they have built and where they are trying to get us to.

P.S would just add I was also told there will be a lot of contract talks over the Summer and to expect more players signing new deals than in's and outs. :D

I have heard it from virtually all of our managers in the last decade.

Ultimately the players decide where they want to be not the clubs.

Of course if a player is determined to leave then they will, no point keeping a player that doesn't want to move in the same direction as everyone else. ,Poch wouldn't want a player like that at the club anyway. That however does not mean they will get to choose who they are sold to, as Modric very much found out.

I think most clubs know that it's going to take £100m plus to prize away Alli which I think will put them off for a season or 2 at least. Especially as I can't see Alli forcing through a move anytime soon.

Modric found that out but the likes of Bale, Berbatov and Carrick did not. Such statements by club are foolhardy because players have a huge amount of control over this. If City come in for Ali and he wishes to leave for hem then there is a very strong possibility that would happen. The clubs responsibility in such circumstance is to extract the maximum premium available and to minimise the disruption as best as possible.

How many years do we want to go back though? Berbatov was the last player Levy sold that strengthened our rivals and that was 9 bloody years ago, and from what I was told, that only happened against the grain for Levy, because Juande wanted him away from the squad.

Looks like de Boer's taking it upon himself to tap up Eriksen on behalf of Barca. That one worries me tbh

Think this was just a case of him being asked "is he good enough for Barca"?

What else should he say?

You went five years back with Modric as an example. The timeframes are irrelevant, this applies to the vast majority of clubs not just us. Van Persie joined Manchester United from Arsenal for example, 2 clubs who have been fierce rivals in the PL era. Absolutely no has said that Everton will not sell us Barkley because they are our 'rivals'. The post Bosman world, I really do not understand why so many talk as if it is still the pre Bosman one.

Exactly. I wish our fans wouldn't keep falling for the media spin on this. We won't be selling to our rivals in the Premier League. It makes zero sense to. I think these words say all that needs to be said on that:

"My relationship with Daniel Levy is so close. The good thing is we have the plan to try to improve. And we will deliver it when we finish the season. Like I told you, the players that we want to keep, we will keep. Because he said to me ‘we don’t need money’. If we sell some players it is because we want to sell some players.”

I know what you are saying but I don't think Arsenal and van persie are the best example to use. Van Persie himself said he left Arsenal because he and Wenger didn't agree on the direction the club was going to go. It wasn't down to money.

Unless I'm reposting 'fake news .."

Christian Eriksen has “all that a Barcelona player must have”, according to Frank de Boer.

“First Ajax, then Tottenham and then the highest level.

“I think he’s ready for a step higher. He has all that a Barcelona player must have. He has an overview, he has a working ethic, and he kicks well with both legs.”

The reason I used Modric was because it was the last high profile player that wanted to move to one of our rivals, and it was vetoed straight away. Wenger yesterday said Sanchez won't be sold to a Prem club(if he is sold).

You are also referencing Bosman and using players with short contracts to prove your point, RVP and Barkley. This is not the case with any of our players. We are in a far stronger position.

It is difficult not to when the stream of news is constant. Only when it becomes too relentless does it seem ridiculous, you know when the whole team has been sold by the Sun, Express, Mirror or Mail. The whole team. Really?!

It also plays on the nagging doubts people have over Levy, like any of them truly know him anyway, and can cite Berbatov and Carrick as examples despite it being ten years ago.
