Wasn't there a rumour that they wanted Tuchel?
Yeah, the Tuchel rumours are strong.

Think this was very unfair on Puel tbh. For all the criticism of negative play it wasn't his fault Austin got injured and they didn't have a backup, then they signed Gabbiadini and he got injured too.

My mate is a Saints fan. He was saying a few weeks ago that there was alot of backstage unrest and falling out with players.

That's really weird Southampton sacking Puel as usually they wait for someone to poach their manager lol.

Initially I was thinking he got them 8th but they did only win 12 games in league and were only 6 points off 17th place so goes to show it was rather tight down there this season!

We obviously didn't notice as was too busy lording it up in 2nd most of the season

And Reed, although a pretty shit manager himself, in his current capacity at Southampton really seems to know his stuff so has probably got someone lined up who they feel may do better.

In their statement, they say: We are confident that we will find the right fit in line with the long term vision of the club.

I think the key is the 'long term vision' part. Puel has apparently upset many of the players and the fans are upset at the negative style.

A month ago the Mail reported: Sportsmail has been told that Puel has repeatedly clashed with numerous players this season who are unhappy with his erratic rotation policy, often changing half the starting XI for each match.

So whatever this vision is or whatever the style the fans would appreciate has to be different to what Puel had in mind. Difficult when they keep selling their better players season after season!

Edit: and as I post this, Sky tweeted..

Thet were never going to get Tuchel. There were never rumors. It was all pipe dream talk from Saints. He's so far ahead of their level.

A lot of context is lost when quoting tweets. I believe he was laughing at the suggestion and embarrassed he had to actually rule himself out....

Sky are saying Derek McInnes has turned down Sunderland to stay with Aberdeen. Ouch.

Lead an underdog to Europe or take over a complete failure of a club that needs a complete rebuild. Tough one.

Not.

More 'ouch' because Sunderland had approached Aberdeen a week ago, spent ages negotiating the release and then get turned down by the guy himself. It's not an attractive proposition, especially as the Pickford money will probably not be available to spend. Massive kick in the balls for Sunderland.

I wonder if Marco Silva regrets the quick move to Watford. Thats just about the worst job in the PL as the job security is non existant past a season. If he had waited, he could have had Palace or Saints. On the flip side, i wonder if Saints regret waiting so long to sack Puel since everyone knew they were going to do so anyway. Silva would have been a great choice there

Will be interesting to see who takes over Palace. You gotta figure a new coach has to be announced soon or all of the pre-season is for nothing for them. I read that they made a move for Ranieri but he had already agreed to terms with Nantes

I was thinking the same, the Southampton was the ideal fit for both parties.

So Slutsky is now in charge of Hull. That's honestly a legit good get for them tbh. He built a strong Russian national team during his spell as GM for Russia and also made CSKA Moscow into champions a couple of times.

Him being friends with Abramovic isn't bad either for Hull. Wouldn't be shocked if Chelsea start loaning out guys to Hull for as long as he is there.

Depending on the backstage stability at Hull this could end up solid for them long term.

Anybody else almost spit their coffee out/have a mild heart flutter when they got a mobile update saying 'Southampton sign Mauricio Pellegrino as manager ....' ?

Just happened to 3 of us there with the ESPN app on our phones

I just assumed they were so desperate to have Poch back that they went for the closest name they could find.
