Hi all

I have some ITK that has been verified and approved by A&C this morning.

Was a mates for a BBQ last night and her family are big Spurs fans.
Her old man is mates with Alfie Mawson's dad, Gary I believe, who's a market trader in Ealing, they have known each other for ages.
Anyways they had a family funeral last week (sadly) and my mates Dad was told by Gary they have an offer on the table from us that they are seriously considering, the bid is £15million.

A pinch of salt and all that however, she was adamant!

Cheers
Does anyone ever wonder what "verified and approved by A&C" really means? Is the guy Sherlock Holmes or something, or does he just cold call Alfie Mawson's dad to ask if he spilled the beans at a funeral last week? Or does he do nothing but give the okay if the story doesn't seem like a complete fantasy?

Anyway, I quite like the look of Mawson. 15m seems like a lot considering he hasn't even played a full season at prem level, but the world has gone crazy. If he is a direct Wimmer replacement (assuming he leaves), I'm good with it as long as we aren't shelling out >8-10m more than what we are getting.

I don't see why we can't get a big name player. We might not get the biggest name, but we aren't far down the list of preferred options for players. How many of the teams above us are looking at players in the same position?

No they aren't. There are loads of factors that dictate price. Dani Alves is a big name, but City are probably going to sign him on a free transfer. Obviously his wages will be huge though. Silva was less than £50m as well.

Well yeah, but we're only ever going to sign players well under 30. So any 'big' name in that range is going to be big money. In a market where Salah is €50m you either pay up or you don't get the player.

So is this technically a bbq source?

Rather give CCV more minutes than spend 15m on a back-up

Fingers crossed we can pull another Alli out of the hat 'cause we definitely cant compete with others in signing 'big name' players due to the wage cap. Not necessarily pessimistic though as we do have a good record of finding unearthed gems

We have a few at our academy.

Onomah was instrumental in a World Cup winning team, as was KWP. Winks will be back and fit. Edwards, I feel, will have a part to play, even CCV I think will play a part in the upcoming season.

That's 5 off the top of my head, all exciting young prospects who have impressed at various levels.

Mawson's hardly experienced
I anticipated that reply. He is further advanced than CCV. From what I hear, he has a lot of learning to do, and they want to take their time with him. If Wimmer goes, we need an almost direct replacement who can play in a back 3/4/5.

We could do a lot worse than Alfie Mawson I think, although he's still a little untested at this level.

Mawson would be a good signing, has massive potential, and is English, he is determined and a leader, every time I have seen him play I have always been impressed with his defensive qualities and is a danger from attacking set pieces

The transfer market has changed in the last 5 years. The days of waiting until late August and getting a cut price deal on very good players is gone. Just look at how we scrambled around during the deadline last summer for an attacking player and paid an astronomical fee for Sissoko. Even EPL teams with players running down contracts would rather keep the player than sell on Levy's terms, as the transfer fees being offered aren't really game-changers anymore with the volume of television revenue (see the Berahino fiasco from two summers ago).

The one thing we can do late is potentially trigger release clauses, like we did with Son and Dembele in the past. Nevertheless, it's pretty clear that the club (and most supporters) feels comfortable with where we are, and unless Poch pushes Levy really hard, like he did with the Sissoko signing, I don't think we'll see more than 1 player this summer who will compete for a regular place (assuming Walker stays).

Ultimately, finishing top 4 again would be a great achievement for this club.

If am honest mawson is great but its not the most important position to improve. Lemar ffs us a proper gutter. Didn't want to hear that. Hopefully our orher backups as always cone to fruition. Be nice to get our no.1 target for once though

With JJ having pooh-poohed the likes of De Ligt, Under, Sidibe, Ginter and Lemar it seems likely to me that we will be concentrating on signing players with premiership (or championship) experience. While it might not be sexy I think i'd be happy if we signed the likes of Mawson, Sessegnon, Gray, Barkley and King and let Poch work his magic.

I think you are right about there being no 'cut price' deals any more. These days there is too much money available to clubs so thzt means a greater number of clubs going for the same player pushes prices up _ the old supply and demand problem. Now we are moving towards coming a genuine top 4 side, clearly we need to get in a better class of players and they just don't come cheaply.

I think Mr Levy knows full well the importance to us winning some silverware this season. I am hopeful that somewhere behind the scenes he, MP and those others involved in transfer system are busy involved in improving the squad. The hard part for me is finding away to be patient. When the football season is in full flow, a month can seem a week. In this mid season, a week can seem a month.

I know we had ITK a few weeks back of only 3/4 incoming, but I can't help but think that number will be dictated by outgoings.
All previous media links were to right sided CB's, like Veltman and Ginter, maybe as nod to the talk Dier wanted to concentrate on DM rather than RCB.
Now we have ITK suggesting Mawson, which would tie in with the talk of Wimmer wanting to leave. Like for like.
Beyond that, Sessegnon has been strongly linked as LWB, plus Barkley and Lemar as AM options, plus Gray, Balde and Mariano in the media, who are more forwards than AM. Add in the need for a possible Walker replacement and maybe Lopez too, suddenly the theory of 4 players is blown out of the water. Admittedly this number is inflated by the need to replace Walker and Wimmer rather than just outright squad shaping.

My only assumption is, the relative appathy towards transfers that JJ alludes to, suggests maybe Poch is just happier with the current state than we believe. Maybe Carter-Vickers is closer than assumed, likewise Onomah, Edwards and Walker-Peters

It is the squad we need to improve not the first 11, our bench in most games last year was weak. We know we are a club who gets no luck with injuries and the squad cost us last year.

What a load of nonsense. We should always be looking to improve our first 11.
