Couldn't find a thread to bump, but was certainly one of the key players back in the old days. A lot of people were hit and miss with him because he wasn't so much of a footballer but in my opinion he was one of the best defensive midfielders in his prime. You knew what you was going to get with him and he always put in 100%. If all our players had the same mentality every game we would win the league. Anyway I wish him well for the future...

"The decision to retire has not been an easy one for me but having thought long and hard over it, and having discussed it with those closest to me, I believe that now is the right time to move on to the next chapter in my life and career.

"When I started my career at Charlton Athletic all those years ago I could only have dreamt at that time just what was to follow over the next two decades. I feel incredibly honoured and proud to have enjoyed the career that I have and I've loved every moment of it.
"I have enjoyed so many incredible moments during my career. From making my first team debut at Charlton, to playing regularly in the Premier League, playing in the Champions League to then playing in a major tournament for England, as well as ultimately fulfilling a lifelong dream by captaining my country. There are just too many highlights to mention.

"I would like to thank everyone at Charlton Athletic, Norwich City, Chelsea, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham for the unbelievable support that I've been shown throughout my time at each and every one of the club's I've been proud to represent.

"Thank you to the fans of all of the clubs that I've been lucky enough to play for. Your support has meant everything to me and you've supported me throughout all of the ups and downs during my career. I hope I was able to repay the faith shown in me by my commitment and performances on the pitch.
"I would like to thank all of my teammates over the course of my career as well as the coaches and managers that I've played under. I've learnt a huge amount from everyone that I've worked with that I have no doubt will hugely benefit me in my next career chapter.

"Finally, and most importantly, I would like to thank my family for all of their unconditional love and support throughout. My wife Carly, and all of her family, and our sons Frankie, Murphy, Sonny and Rafa have been there for me through everything and I thank them from the bottom of my heart. Thank you too to my Mum and Dad, who I hope I've made proud. Without them all nothing would have been possible.

"When I was a boy I dreamt of becoming a professional football player and I feel very honoured to have accomplished my dream. I have always tried to set high standards on and off the pitch. I hope most of all throughout my career I have been a good role model not only to my sons but also to all of my teammates who played with me as well as all those who supported me.

"I'm now looking forward to the next chapter of my life and career and hope to make an announcement soon with regards to what that will be."

added steel to a team that had no steal. remember us losing 5 on the bounce getting Scotty and Ade in and went on a flyer.

liked his hair too, but when he started pirouetting it was time to go.

I'll always remember he got picked for Eng Capt ahead of Gerrard (before Scot got injured and Gerrard held onto it).

and OP, "old days"? how old are you? 13?

An ode to Scott...

He was a solid player. Sometimes great, sometimes average, but he never stopped trying.

Didn't realise how good he was until he joined us. One of the last hark backs to a good old fashioned DM who would go through a wall to win the ball back. Very similar qualities to Roy Keane in that sense. A player's player. Enough of the clichés but I actually do mean them!

Thanks Scott. You were a top player and a great example.

Class act, proper footballer, and a fans favourite where ever he went. Miss step in joining chelsea, but otherwise an exemplary career. As key a player as modric, king et al in that redknapp team.

Hats off.

For three quarters of his first season his performances were nothing short of heroic. He had to do the running for about three men in the system we were playing.

But he started managing an injury towards the end of the campaign to make it to Euro 2012, ended up needing an operation that kept him out for ages and was never the same player after that. Shame, but I guess he was always a pretty short term signing in any case.

A real classic act, handles himself so professionally on and offf the court.
It's a pleasure to watched him play in our shirt; nothing but the best wishes to him.

Quality midfielder. Shame he never scored for us but added so much grit in midfield and a leader on and off the field.

Got nothing but respect for Parker, always conducted himself as a model pro on and off the pitch and always put a shift in.

Levy should be on the phone offering Parker a coaching job.

If he holds off on that announcement for a couple more months, he could be PM.

Try negotiating with Scotty Parker in Europe (y)

I think he'd be great to get involved, always difficult to say how good a coach they'd be but he get the feeling he'd be a credible one.

Was great, for us, especially under Redknapp. I was confused by AVB's idea either to let him have a free role, or encouraging him to push forward; during AVB's time he seemed too far up the pitch a lot of the time, which reduced his defensive effectiveness and seemed to ask too much of him from an attacking perspective. Winning the ball and passing simple was his strength and when he was doing that, he was one of the best Defensive Midfielders going. He was never going to be a Carrick or a Modric.

He's been around the block and is a straight-forward kind of character as far as I can tell. Would have no qualms with him coming back and coaching.

Good luck Scotty!

I remember Winks mentioning that Parker sat down with him several times to help with his game.

http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/foo...-id-love-to-emulate-him-one-day-a3469926.html

Parker was at Spurs from 2011-13 and Winks revealed the former England midfielder had taken him under his wing, when Winks was still a youth player dreaming of reaching the first team one day.

Winks said: “Scott was a top player and a top person. He was great with me, always giving me advice. His career speaks for itself and he’s a player I’d love to emulate one day.

“He was coming to the end of his career at Spurs and he was looking more to the coaching side. He has a lot of advice to pass on and I was just trying to get as much advice as possible. Scott just seemed to be perfect for that.

“I remember one time after training, we went into a room together and watched clips of his previous game. He talked me through what he thought was good in his game and what I needed to watch back and do myself.

“He is a great all-round midfielder. You look at his passing, his tackling, his mentality when he goes onto the pitch – and he has captained England.

“I first trained with the first team he was near the end of his time at Spurs and I was in and out of the sessions.

“As a young scholar just looking up to someone like Scott and training with him, I was in awe of him in a way. Hopefully if I do get the chance to play against him there will be respect on both sides, but I will go out and try to win.”
