But they haven't lied, have they? No news paper has said "Dier will leave". They've only reported that ManUtd would want to bid, which in truth, any media is perfectly in the right to publish that, as it's simply conveying information.

Yeah in truth it makes fuck all difference. If we are genuine in turning down all bids no matter what then it doesn't matter what the press say.

It's not like Dier wouldn't be aware of Utd's interest, whether it's been printed or not.

If this Goat info on the press release is true, it just shows how Journos are no different in wanting to believe the sexier story. A cynical view is they run it just for the clicks. It would also explain why most Dier articles are qualified at the bottom that Spurs do not want to sell however.

Absolutely, the story is being run for the clicks. I note though that The Goat's ITK uses the word "briefed":

'Daniel Levy briefed the media at least a month ago that Dier wouldn't be sold and asked that no stories to the contrary be printed as spurs wouldn't be selling and the stories would be false.'

This may have been a verbal briefing as opposed to a formal press release.

Clearly, Mourinho and manure are telling the media that they want Dier, and journalists therefore consider it legitimate to report this.

Where the press is playing fast and loose is taking the Spurs/Levy "not for sale" as a bargaining position rather than the absolute position The Goat's iTK suggests it is.

I just popped over to Bluemoon (Man City forum) to check what they were saying in the Kyle Walker thread and there was this one chap called "twosips" who is apparently ITK with Man City and he said;

Very, very nearly there. Hopefully everything will be a lot clearer tomorrow.

Yeah they are within their own rights to post the stories, as after all the Utd interest is legit, and the rumours of Dier being open to the move also back it up. Thing with transfers is all 3 parties have to be on the same page (both clubs and player), just ask Liverpool...

I think some of you wanting that player with the WOW factor may be missing something .... in the nicest possible way, of course. What makes our team as good as it is is the synergy there, the team is better than the sum of its parts. What we need may be the last piece in the jigsaw. Barclay may, or may not be, that piece. It does depend on how he interacts with the others on the pitch at THFC, not how he did it at Everton. Now he is skillful and puts in a shift it seems to me that many of his passes go astray as they would if his team mates aren't on the same wave length. Our front players are bright, young and work hard. I think Barclay could add something we are missing, that intangible quality that COULD take us to the next level. He may well not but if we can get him at the right price it certainly an intriguing possibility.

There are indeed transfer stories that are simply fictitious. There is no doubt about it. But ManUtd's side of things isn't one of them. And the media has worked within the restraints. Objectively, what would we really have them do? "Oh, we can't print ManUtd's interest because Levy told us not to report on a move for Dier". That's really not any better, in the long term.

I'd say Mourinho is just trying to create waves knowing full well he has no chance of getting Dier. It's been his MO for years.

Eh? What do you base that on? His extensive game time? We will never replace his quality for little money. Unless you think a big name will come to warm the bench, in that case you should watch LA LA Land again and feel right at home

We've had a couple of snippets posted in here that Mawson could be joining us. He'd probably be Wimmers replacement if we signed him.

So Pereira to replace Walker, Foyth to replace Wimmer and Barkley to replace Sissoko. The only one of those that's definitely an upgrade is Barkley to be honest. I don't see how that can be considered a particularly successful window; it more or less leaves us where we started.

I still think a quality, pacy attacking midfielder/forward is a necessity. We've previously had ITK on Lemar, but no one else we've had ITK on so far has had those attributes, apart from maybe Josh King, and I'm still of the opinion that he would be a pretty underwhelming signing.

I am not convinced Foyth is replacing Wimmer. I feel it will be Mawson who is also linked with us heavily. In that case, we would be getting someone in form & equally good. Foyth IMO is a long term prospect signing who according to reports from South America needs time around 6 months.

As for as Walker- we will definitely lose his form & pace but Pereira is not a slouch either. If anything he has lot of upside & could improve well. Pereira can comfortably play RB & LB, has pace & can cross too. He is certainly rated well in France. And there is Trippier who IMO is good enough to start for us in PL. Overall if Pereira happens we will not miss Walker IMO.

Barkley is improvement on Sissoko, if happens.
Agree on winger, we need a proper one.

Let's see how window pans out before jumping to conclusions on if it's underwhelming or good

Sounds like they've just paid up. I think they are getting a bit desperate now after what has happened with Alves.

Sadly, the snidey tricks this guy gets up to often have repercussions. It sometimes can get into the minds of some players to the detriment of both player and the club. He might be up there with the very best of football coaches, but with antics like this, he is also down there with the cockroaches and that is what I will remember him as.

I would bank on Barclay doing well for us

I also think he will be good for us and I hope he can take us to that next level. Our strength in depth over the next year or two is going to improve with the good youth we have coming through. If we can get Barclay and replace Walker and whoever else leaves I think the future is going to be very bright for us.

Bring in Barkley, new RB and as has been echoed we do need a kind of Mane style player. Do this and we are on for the title, no doubt

You'd expect the two ins with the Walker money to be Barkley and Pereira. Then Lopez for McGee, Mawson for Wimmer and Foyth as a development signing. Then with previous ITK alluding to two non like for like signings, one as mentioned would be Barkley and then you'd expect the other to be someone in the ilk of Son.
