JJ said the stuff about lowballing them is BS. Perhaps there's another target that hasn't been mentioned that we're considering.
Which gets to the other part of my post. We've known for several months Walker was going how can we not have figured out who we want as a replacement ?

We don't really need to improve the first eleven. There's more of a problem with our squad options.

Where do we find significant upgrades who are willing to be squad players...(Sissoko accepted)....Most squad upgrades will probably be coming from regular first team footie elsewhere...I just think its quite a difficult market for us with our current financial restrictions....

JJ on Twitter (summary)

Fake news : Suso, Meyer, Marhez, Kovacic.

Only looking to bring in players that can improve first 11. Pereira possible.

Walker - No player should mess with Poch. His exit has not left any unrest with other players.
I don't get the Pereira possible bit. If we want him then we pay his release clause. If we are still making up our mind between him and others then seriously what the hell does our scouting team do ? So most likely "possible" means we are trying to low ball Porto and while no doubt many on here will rush out to defend Levy's tactics I think you all need to remember that these very same tactics saw us panic and pay £30m for Sissoko last year. If we want to be a big club at some point we need to start acting like a big club in the transfer market.
Or we are one of a number of clubs that have met the release clause and it's possible the player will choose Tottenham over Juve. Just saying there are always other reasons.

There has been repeated ITK and media stories, that Poch buys players to train, not to play. Selection is based on what they do in training. Squad players is a myth. Players come in and create their own squad status based on what they do in training. They don't get pidgeon holed upon arrival.

Or we'd been given signs they'd sell for £15m etc and suddenly they're asking us to cough up the full whack at once etc. Unlike United, for instance, we can't just chuck money at the loose ends.

It's a weird mindset we fans get into when we see others around us buying. It makes us think we are being left behind. So, as much as it seems rather dull that we might end up with a new rb and Barkley, and that we need to show ambition to keep our marquee players, we seem to forget that our squad needs very little in terms of improvement. It's those around us that have to fill holes and then bed in new players. Without sounding overly optimistic, we have the most settled squad in the EPL. We also have very few holes. Yes, depth would be nice in certain areas... But even then, I look at the likes of Jansen and Sissoko (should he stay) and wouldn't be surprised if they improve in their second seasons under Poch.

Hence, I'm really not that fussed when ITK comes back with drips n drabs. Sure doesn't make me wanna reach for the straight razor. Fact is, we are in a rare position... One that many of us older fans have never experienced... A team and manager that is one of the best around.
I like much of what your saying in theory but I think one could also say the top six will be better then they were last year, maybe even significantly so. City and Arsenal both look to be on the warpath so the gap between them and us may well close and, in order to stay ahead of the pack, we too need to improve. So far, all we have done is weaken our first 11. Obviously signing players is no science and who knows Bernardo and Lacazette may completely flop, but I very much doubt it.

Alongside that, we were absolutely dismal in the CL, really outclassed, and although it was partly down to squad depth and obviously inexperience, I don't see how Barkley and a back up right back along with a years experiance will help us much.

For what it's worth, I really don't think we need to make 10 new signings, but I do feel, once we have sorted out a Walker replacement, one truely qulity attacking player would help us massively. A Hazard, Sanchez etc. But obviously Levy would never pay 40+ mil for a player or the sort of wages a 40+ mil signing would cost. But, although I'm not suggesting we all reach for the razors, I think there is enough reason to be slightly concerned about the lack of activity and the names being linked.

Oh I agree totally that is Poch's philosophy and its great in theory if the players buy into that as well, but reality of that doesn't really work in practice....quality players want to play and we don't pay enough in wages to make up for the lack of game time....particularly so in WC season

Great, how about we get on and sign them rather than consider our options.

Remember when Poch said we needed to be more intelligent in the market, well right now I'm not seeing this at al.

As well as identifying the right players who we can afford, and looking at players in the last year of their contract to get a bargain, I translated that as waiting for the right moment to make your move. After the money clubs have done their business and clubs/agents know that they are far less likely to get an over inflated fee anymore.

We certainly have always tried to do that, but the results recently were mixed and that seemed to be due to Baldini/Mitchell recommending the wrong players. Hopefully Hitchen is a better at finding Poch some players he likes.
