I was chatting to a friend of mine who is a Man City fan...he's from Manchester originally and has always supported them so not a plastic fan but I was surprised by a conversation I had last week with him where we initially started talking about Walker but then lead to him telling me how many teams they now own..."we've bought New York City FC, Melbourne City FC and now looking to buy Girona FC...." I couldn't work out if he realised it's not Man City buying up all these clubs it Sheikh Mansour and his play business City Football Group. It sounded like he had forgotten that they were once poor and shit...maybe he's turning plastic.

I'm always amused by the forelock tugging towards the 'big' clubs. SCBC fans were exactly the same, bear no ill will towards mighty Liverpool pillaging them, it's an honour guv'nor. On the or hand they get quite bitter about the thought of a player joining us.

Personally I think it's conditioning from the press, it's a rite of passage to play for the money clubs. And the fact we haven't won't a lot, but an honest Everton fan could see we've been a way in front of them for a decent while now.

I checked. We've consistently finished ahead of them since the 2009/10 season, when we qualified for the Champions League for the first time. Prior to that, we'd finish ahead of them about half the time, perhaps slightly more. They have only finished ahead of us once since 2009/10. Here's a table.

I'm of the view that this constitutes temporary form, in terms of the history of two large clubs of similar size. We are not "miles bigger" than Everton. We've just been better-run over the past 16 years.

To be fair, I know a Saints fan who detests all of the players who went to Liverpool but not Luke Shaw as he thinks he went to a much bigger club.

Yeah of course we aren't miles bigger than Everton, but as you've shown, we've generally been clear of them for quite some time. There's long history and recent history of course, and I'd imagine players see things in more recent terms most of the time. Since Ross Barkley was born in 1993, they've finished in front of us only 4 times I believe. When we were rubbish, they were often rubbisher. So over the last 20 odd years it is fair to say it's a stretch to call it a sideways move.

Can the mods start introducing banning orders for everyone and anyone who gets caught up in these ludicrous discussions on a club's 'bigness'? It's a daft conversation that is entirely partisan and, like any abstract concept, entirely unprovable.

It was an everton fan that started it and was posted in the "what our opponents are saying about us" thread. I understand where you are coming from but it is on topic.

If you want to talk about something else go on the other teams sites and find something interesting and post it here.

I'm not interested as whether it is on topic or not. My only concern is these perennial 'bigness' conversations that crop up are daft, unresolvable and do not contribute to any intelligent discussion. .

Neither does complaining about them.

If you want to discuss something else go on the other teams forums, find something interesting and post it.

It is daft but not as daft as banning people for having it.

Don't visit the Lamela thread. You'd hate it there.
