"Mourinho is said to be in disbelief, after realising that a player who wasn't for sale, will not be sold to him"

When was the last time he said that? The minute he lost his place to Wanyama, those blasted Bayern rumours were trumpeted all over the media.

The only reason we have him switching between CB and CM is because, in my honest opinion, we are short of options; not because he is so wonderfully gifted, and tactically intelligent.

If we were short of options we'd happily sell him for £60m, there's a reason Poch has been fighting tooth and naill to keep him because he's absolutely integral to what we are trying to do and he embodies the exact mentality that Poch laves in a footballer.

A little truth here, but really selling Dier short, imo. Dier is important to the squad as much for his mentality as for his football skills. But, he has been here three seasons, and played the majority of his games in new position in each season: 14/15: RB, 15/16: DM, and, 16/17: RCB

The only thing that has been consistent is Poch's desire to get Dier into the squad anywhere he can.

We are short of midfielders.

I believe keeping him is as much about PR as anything.

For me, there is a question mark over Dier in terms of a sulkiness when he is not getting things his own way. I think he has been leveraging these media stories against us for the bones of a year now. He kicked a few Chelsea players at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Is that what is so wonderful about him?

1. He said it on the record last season ie more recently than any alleged opinion otherwise:
He told Standard Sport: “I could do a list of loads of top players who play in many different positions. David Alaba and Philipp Lahm of Bayern Munich, or Javier Mascherano of Barcelona.
“People always seem to want to pin me down to one position but I see players all over Europe who play in more than one. It ensures they get appearances for their clubs and it’s a fantastic weapon for a manager.

“It’s a bit stupid to be talking about it [playing in a specific position]. If I could get to the level of players like Alaba, Lahm or Mascherano, I would be a very happy man.”

2. Your second point - Poch disagrees:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...-s-Eric-Dier-new-style-player-Pochettino.html
and values him immensely:

Wanyama, Dembele, Winks, Sissoko, Onomah, Dier - that's 6 midfielders besides he's a CMF and CB which is why he plays.

The eyes see what they want to see and you've clearly made your mind up about him, the key thing is what the manager sees and it's evident that Dier is key to what he wants, even if you excuse the general mistakes he makes which is expected of a young player...the potential he carries is pretty massive IMO.

Fair play to you for at least putting the work in. I have read those articles, but it does not change much for me-Dier sees himself exclusively as a midfielder. I have said that above, and that has come from Trix.

He may well do, but given he was a centre back before Pochettino converted him into a midfielder, he might consider that his current manager knows what's best for him. Also, given Mourinho is about as bad a manager as you can get to play for if you're an up and coming young player that needs further development, he should think very carefully about his next move. If you don't play well for a few games, he'll just replace you with another player for an enormous fee. Another very important thing I would be considering, is that Mourinho never stays at a club for more than 3 years, so he'll be gone in 2 years and replaced by a manager who may not want Dier.

I suspect we'll see him playing in the middle of a back 3 this season, where he will be effectively playing in midfield when we have the ball, and he'll be absolutely fine.

So you'll completely disregard Dier's own words on the subject because they don't tally with your opinion? Interesting stance.

Well, that's a fucking expensive £60m + salary PR stunt if you ask me.

Personally, I think it's more about keeping him because we want him.

If any player had an agent who wasn't leveraging those United stories to get a pay hike, then that player should be looking for a new agent.

Dear Mr Mourinho,
We have an up and coming defensive midfielder who we acquired on a free transfer last year. His name is Youcan Fuckoff. We will give due consideration to your predicament and if you'd like to put in a bid for him for £60m instead, we will promise give you an answer a minute before the end of the transfer deadline.

His biggest asset is his ability to say his name very loudly, it's literally the first thing that comes out of his mouth, with that in mind we give you permission to speak to him directly at 11.59 pm on transfer deadline day so he can introduce himself, don't bother with agents and go betweens just pin back your lugholes or put your phone on loudspeaker mode...

Did he not decide to withdraw from an England u21 squad so he could try and cement his place at Spurs as a CB?

He'll be the next player we sell to Real Madrid, not Manchester fucking United.
