Ronaldinho, Scholes, Neymar?

Come on...
Yeah I don't agree with all the names, but its what id expect from a thread like this. In all honesty, most players in this category would be WC wonders bigged up on three weeks work. Most of them get found out eventually though.

I thought this thread would be filled with players like Coutinho, not Neymar. :D

For me there's a huge difference there. I thought we were just discussing overrated players, not people literally mugging off some of the greatest players ever.

I remember the first couple of times I saw Neymar I wasn't that impressed. Obviously he had extraordinary skill levels but he came across like a show pony.

I saw him a few times extra and my first impression was clearly wrong.

Ronaldinho was the best player in the world for a time, no doubt about that.

So was Shevchenko, doesn't mean he should be grouped with people like Zidane and Ronaldo.

I don't know why I mentioned him, it's not even that I don't see it as per the thread title, I just think he is mildly overrated.

Rooney anyone? He's only ever scored more than 20 league goals twice in his career.

Ronaldinho has to be the most skilful player I have ever seen. If he wanted to he could do the unimaginable and win the game. He has to be in that all-time elite.

The problem was he loved to party and have a social life so he didn't achieve many things that he should have done. He could have won Brazil another WC and he certainly should have lifted the CL with Barca more times. I think that's why ppl say he's overrated.

It's partly it. For sure he was one of the most talented players, but I don't think he really impacted as many games and championships as those elite players. He was capable of anything but I felt like a lot of the time he did flatter to deceive.

If he had the dedication and application of say Messi or C.Ronaldo - I'd group him with the others I'm sure but always felt a bit disappointed and that there was more to come from him.

Then again, who cares what I think?!

Shevchenko outperformed Ronaldinho in Ballon D'or votes soooooo

Yeah. Unfortunately he did leave a fair bit to be desired. I guess dedication and application are characteristics that define the greats too.

I'm onboard with the Gerrard opinions - especially once he became England's 'inspiration' - the guy was incredibly frustrating to watch. He'd spoil a promising move by trying one of his glory passes instead of some quick inter-change play. It still irks me to this day Scholes was shafted to accommodate him. The guy was a massive let-down for England and once Liverpool deployed him as a deep-lying playmaker it was there for all to see - the guy couldn't dictate the tempo of a game and was all about blood and bluster.

He was a perfect Premier League player but once the platform changed he was nothing special.

Rooney is England and Manchester United's all time record goal scorer.

I think he improved.

Kante...good, but the hype is unbearable.

This strikes me as the sort of suggestion to come from someone that only appreciates the flashy stuff in football.

You take him out of the Chelsea team and we would have comfortably won the premier league last season. You take him out of Leicester's team 2 seasons ago and they're nowhere near the title. He does the work of 2 players in the middle of the park. Might not have the fancy tricks but the speed over which he covers ground, the way he shields the defence and the tenacity of him make him the single most important player in Chelsea's team.

Never improved from an 18yo imo. Others may say I'm wrong though....

I think he improved.

There are probably reasons why he only hit 20+ league goals twice in a season, such as rotation, injuries and playing in a deeper role, but I've always thought he was over-rated. Harry's already done it three times in his short career and some people are only just starting to say that he's not a one season wonder. i don't doubt that Rooneys a good player, but I don't think he's the genius he's made out to be.

Michael Owen - never once managed to get 20 league goals in a season, which even Andy Johnson and Darren fucking Bent did. He was so fast that teams were scared of him, but he was weak technically, as evidenced by the fact that once he'd lost his pace after his injuries he was absolutely useless.

David Trezeguet....did not understand the fuss at all.

Steve McManaman. Again, just couldnt see it myself.

And may be a bit harsh here but Michael Ballack. He was decent at Leverkusen but Munich and particularly Chelsea, he was just a bit 'meh'.

Non Spurs
David Beckham.

Spent the 2nd half of his career riding the wave of the first half.
Annoyed the shit out of me how much he played for England when he was doing next to nothing towards the end. Having a player on the pitch that was good at free kicks is daft and sacrifices a position for a player who does something the rest of the time. Even the American with their handball bring on and take off a kicker as and when needed rather than play him the whole game.

For Spurs
Robbie Keane. Missed sitters, fell on his arse too often with his hands in the air
Michael Dawson. 150% committed and loved him. But he was a poor defender that was made to look good by various partners such as King.

Robbie Keane overrated?

Fucking blasphemy...

Often Robbie Keane's problem was that he thought too much of himself. Being a decent player in the second striker role with the ability for some wonderful flair moments does not make you a technical and tactical master with the ability to run a game, and so drop into midfield as and when you see fit. You think you're helping the team, really you're just getting in the way. Concentrate on the final third and doing the damage where you're suited.

Rooney with similar issues in his latter years.
