I'm not a massive Dier fan, but Ive been very balanced on my opinion on apparent interest in him from Man Utd.

He has done a decent job for us, and his adaptability was invaluable in a thin squad. Hence he always makes a lot of appearances.

But, he doesn't feel me with confidence in possession like the rest of the team. He isnt incredibly mobile. And when him and Wanyama play next to each other he doesn't seem to know what his job is.

Hypothetically, If we had to sell 2 of our top 13-14 players from last season, Walker and Dier would have been pretty much on top of the list for a lot of people I feel, especially at the sums being quoted.

As it is, we just made two great signings, leaving most of Dier's adaptability redundant.

We got an incredibly good player at RB for half what we sold Walker for.

We got a seemingly excellent young centre half.

It would appear that Diers role for us now, is even more that of a 2nd tier sqaud player.

With this in mind if we could get 60m now, to use elsewhere, would you take it?

I would in a heartbeat.

We need him - he's started 94 of Poch's 98 games at the club, and his versatility allows us the in-game flexibility that every team needs.

All title challenging teams need a few players like Dier imo.

Agreed about the past. It was invaluable. But we now have 3 great dedicated centre backs. And 2/3 right backs.

What do you see his role? He wont start half as many games without a serious injury crisis.
Could that money be used elsewhere?

Side note. We arent going to win the league playing at wembley. Accept it now. 4th will be an incredible achievment this season.

See Chelsea game, didn't have the best of games personally but when he was taken off the whole team suffered, of course we need him...

I dont think the whole team suffered at all. He should have started with the unfit Wanyama on the bench

Wanyama had his worst game in a spurs shirt and it culminated with a half chance that lloris should have saved.

We were controlling a game against the league champions.

In general Dier also had a poor game in possession and had Toby shouting and pointing at him for an hour because he kept drifting into his natural position which is where Wanyama was playing.

For us to be successful - across all competitions - we need 14-15 players capable of being in the starting XI for a contending team.

Dier is one of those players. He also provides much of the steel to our spine.

I think he has made a mistake pushing for a role in CM, because I prefer the way Wanyama plays the position. But, Dier can also play the role effectively (albeit not in partnership with Wanyama) - and the competition and ability to rotate will make the entire squad stronger. Not to mention his tactical flexibility - able to slot into a number of positions when we need it.

Firstly, using international football as a barometer for the top level was last relevant pre bosman ruling in 1994. Its dated to say the least. Absolute shit at best. See Englands last 2 starting 11s as a guide.

Secondly, we have now improved out options at the back, which leaves him as the 2nd best defensive midfielder at the club.

The question is, is that 60m we could ise better elsewhere? Consider our useless 2nd centre forward, then have a rethink....

Functional is fine when you are paper thin in those areas. I agree.

We are no longer paper thin.

He is a bang average Cm and RB. A decent CB.

Is that what we need for those 60m sheets? We need more than functional at those prices

There's the issue. You think he's bang average. The problem is you don't have a clue.

I agree with your sentiment, but I think you need more than 14-15. More like 18/19.

Hence my point.

We now have excessive cover at RB, and cB.

Could we use that 60m better?

For my money these make the grade for serious title contending

Lloris

Aurier. Trippier
Rose. Davies

Toby. jan. Sanches.

Dier

Wanyama

Dembele

Alli. Ericson Son

Kane

Winks is close, Lamella who knows.

The others, Sissoko. Janssen, wimmer are no where near the level.

That is maybe 15, and its heavily tilted defensively. Looks like we are getting. 1-2 more, but if you got some decent dough in, that number could easily reach 17- 18.

Yeah that moment showed Dier's worth. It was like taking a block out of a toppling tower and watching the whole thing collapse. You think you can do without him but for reasons that perhaps most fans, myself included, don't fully understand he's pivotal. We shouldn't sell at any price.
