I think it's pretty clear that he wanted to move primarily because he felt that there was no path to first team football at a club that spends 200m every summer on whatever whim their manager du jour dreams up. It was probably also the case that he wanted to go back home to London which served as a convenient excuse for essentially going on strike. City wouldn't allow him to move to a domestic rival while under scholarship so he did what was best for his career and went to one of the best clubs in world football for developing young talents.

There's a better path to our first team than Dortmund's - Dembele had already made a significant impact in Ligue 1 before signing last year - he'll have Reus, Goetze, Kagawa, Schurlle, Pulisic and Yarmolenko to compete with. Realistically if he'd joined us and impressed in training he'd only have Eriksen, Son and Lamela in competition for a place. City were powerless to stop him moving to another British club if that was what he wanted.

City could have forced him to sit out for a year while he was under scholarship. He's at a crucial stage in his development and made the decision that he didn't want to simply train for a year, I don't blame him.

So from all we can gather, he wanted out of City. Ideally he would have wanted to be closer to home... but City didn't want to sanction a PL move.
So makes sense for him to go to Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund have signed Manchester City youngster Jadon Sancho.

The highly-rated England youth international wanted to leave City and had stopped training.

City gave him permission to speak to Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid only - no British clubs.

Why are people criticising a 17 year old kid for agreeing to join Dortmund when its pretty clear his path to Spurs was blocked.

Could you handle not playing competitive football for a year as a 17 year old?

Fair play to him for moving abroad, more players should do that same IMO. He'll come out of it all the better.

Let's see how many games he actually plays. Dortmund are absolutely stacked in his position.

Really, as much as this makes me hate City more, really we had the ball in our court when they wanted Walker and we fumbled it. We should have insisted. I can only assume it's because Poch really wanted him gone that we didn't stick to our guns. Ether way, it's a big fuck up. TBH, if we where City and the situation was reversed, we would probably rather sell abroad.
