He stepped back from the main events, cup finals and... Its the BBC, just the Cup Final.I swear he retired like 10 years ago? He's the Jay-Z of football commentary
Yeah, Barry Davies was the master. Motty is an absolute legend in the game but I agree with @scat1620, Motty's commentary has been quite dreadful in the last few years, lots of "oh...it's a goal.....(insert player name)" and lots of incoherent descriptions in the build up to goals - a shame really as he used to be one of the best, although I don't blame him for wanting to continue doing what he enjoys. If only he'd stuck to FA cup finals - 'The Crazy Gang have beaten The Culture Club' was a really clever bit of commentary.
But give me Barry Davies every day of the week: I still have an old 1982 VHS recording of him, up in my loft somewhere, comparing Garth Crooks to Pele, after Crooksie had scored a bullet header against Wolves on the day we opened the West Stand - all done with tongue firmly placed in cheek, but equally clever all the same.

Alan "you mean Liverpool aren't the only team in this league?" Green.Yeah, Barry Davies was the master. I'd much rather it be Alan Green hanging up though!
Just seen that he's not doing MOTD commentary anymore but I can say that his commentary was easily the worst I have ever heard on that show.Alan "you mean Liverpool aren't the only team in this league?" Green.
Motson is / was good. I preferred Barry Davies too. Am I right in thinking he always wanted to do the cup final, but the Beeb always gave it to Motty?
Boyhood Spurs fan as well IIRC
Thought he was Barnet?
Not sure, I remember reading something once about him being Spurs and thinking "Interesting, I didn't know that" but obviously I don't know whether the article was nonsense. Could well be that he's Barnet.
I think wiki says Barnet and that's where he got his first football reporting role.
Edit: not quite but umm ye...
