Spurs finally have full-back uninterested in money
Date published: Wednesday 6th September 2017 11:59

Serge Aurier claims his ‘salary is of little importance’, which must be music to the ears of Daniel Levy.

The Ivorian right-back has joined Tottenham for PSG for £23m but has taken a pay cut to play in the Premier League.

Tottenham have lost Kyle Walker to Manchester City and doubled wages this summer, while Danny Rose has gone public about his wage woes.

He claims that PSG ‘didn’t respect his true worth’ as French football’s finest defender.

“I wanted a new life because PSG didn’t respect my true worth. They dwelt on other matters beside football,” said Aurier.

“Statistically speaking, I am the most influential defender in Ligue 1 between 2013 and now. I have also won nine trophies with PSG.

“There are more striking things about my career than what happened off the field, but this is what they preferred to linger over.

“I feel free now. PSG offered me a new three-year deal, but I have left them for a new adventure. I turned them down for a number of reasons. I want to discover a new way of life.

“I got on well with everyone at the club — bosses, players, coaches and fans — and the proof comes from the fact they wanted to keep me. But I had to think of myself. It is a personal decision.

“I had some business with the police that was blown up by the media in Europe. Normally when a matter goes on for a year or more they move on to something else.

“But in my case there was far too much of a fuss. If I hadn’t been mentally strong I would have cracked up.

“I could have stayed another year or two. PSG’s president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is like a second father to me and the team is like a family.

“I hurt some people with my decision to leave but that is life. I wanted to see a new world.

“Tottenham are an ambitious club that plays good football and often finishes around the top of the Premier League.

“I have always dreamed of playing in England and I have seized the opportunity that has come my way.

“I am 24 and have many seasons still ahead of me. It’s now down to me to fight, improve and enjoy some great times with my new club.

My salary is of little importance. I want to be with a club where I can have fun. If money was my main interest I swear that I’d have stayed in Paris. They offered me a very interesting contract — more so than the first one.

“But I have signed a five-year deal with Tottenham so I can experience new things and become one of the best right-backs in the world. And with God’s blessing I will achieve my aim.”
what a beautiful thing to say, and is something the world has lost touch with people need to get back to putting fun ahead of money. Along with the conundrum he created for the over top PC fans, he's already a favourite of mine and we havent even got to the football yet.

I am NOT trying to be negative on the guy; rather, I'm asking a serious question: if he is indeed a better version of Kyle Walker- and a guy who wanted out of PSG (and, as such, was a much cheaper buy)- then why didn't Pep snap him up instead? It's not like PSG is some small-time outfit and he flew under City's radar...

Trust me, no one wants this to work out more than I do, I'm just a bit skeptical is all, as if there's something not quite right here. Because on paper he seems perfect, his only downside being his never having played in England.

Why does this seem to good to be true?

Cause Man City needed to fulfill their home grown quota by buying Walker presumably, also Utd were heavily linked but it seems like they didn't want to do any of the donkey work in regards to obtaining a work permit for him.

Because teams had serious misgivings about his off-field behaviour and the chance he might be refused a work visa. They had such misgivings that they weren't willing to put in the legwork to see if it was viable. However, we as a club did our due diligence and then some. This is clearly a case of us getting ahead of bigger teams because we were willing to do the work and they just were not.

Also, think the amount of work we put in endeared the club and the hierarchy to Serge, hard to deny you're wanted when a club goes that far in making sure a deal can get done.

Can he play LB as well? If so he might be more of a threat to Davies than Trippier in the short term, if we play a back 3.

I'm sure he and Sanchez will be on the bench against Everton.

Dunno, Davies has been heads and shoulders above Trippier both offensively and defensively thus far.

I think with Wanyama being injured, Dier will play DM and Sanchez will come in at CB

This. It could turn out to be very canny by us if all goes smoothly. He was clearly seen as a massive load of hassle in Ligue 1. But hey, so was Cantona

Little bit on the "I don't care about money" - I would argue that he didn't have much choice given his last 12 months. He was in no position to command anything. Let's hear what he thinks about money after a couple of cracking seasons under Poch and a big team sniffing around. I'd wager his attitude will change

To call it 'beautiful' tho is naive in the extreme

City don't bother with players that might work out. They throw as much cash as is necessary at the finished article. in Walker's case he also fills one of the home grown spaces. They also threw millions at Danilo so must have a few reservations about Walker. I doubt they'd bother with Aurier in case it involved some effort to get him to where they wanted.

I doubt they had reservations about Walker, they lost Zabaleta and Sagna so they needed 2 RB's really.

PSG wanted him to stay and offered him a new contract with significantly improved wages. Yet he chose to take a pay cut and sign a 5 years contract with us. He definitely has different priority in life compared to walker.

Fair point. I wonder what Walker felt though when they went straight in for Danilo.

Seen these quotes around but not sure the source....

Pochettino will also hope to see an improvement from his new signing Serge Aurier, who aimed homophobic insults at manager Laurent Blanc and Zlatan Ibrahimovic while at Paris Saint-Germain, and was also convicted of assaulting a police officer.

Yes, really.

Pochettino stated earlier on Thursday that he is giving Aurier a fresh start and that the Ivory Coast international is starting a “new chapter” in north London.

But when he was reminded of Aurier’s comments about Blanc and Ibrahimovic, Spurs’ manager suggested he has made it abundantly clear to the 24-year-old how he would react to any repeat: “I said to him ‘I will kill you’. I would headbutt him,” said Pochettino.

Like Aurier, the Tottenham boss played for PSG in the French capital – but he felt no need to ask for any opinions on the right-back before signing him, choosing instead to trust his own judgement when he spoke to the player face to face.

“Always I try to feel what the player translates to you when you have a conversation and you meet,” said Pochettino. “It’s more important, the feeling that you get from people.

“I had a long chat with him and I explained how we are, how I am, what I expect from him, and the commitment from him – but not only from him, it’s the same conversation that we have with all the players before signing.

“We are so clear, and then the confusion can arrive after, because some people forget what we spoke about after a year. We are so clear and we try not to change in our position.

“With Serge Aurier we were clear, and then if some issues happen in the future, we will see. But I trust in him and he needs to show we can trust him, from today.”

People keep saying this but it's not true.

De Bruyne
Sterling
Jesus
Sane
Gundogan
Stones
Ederson
Mendy
Bernado Silva

When fit, most of those players play regularly. The last three will eventually become key players. In that list, none are anywhere near the finished article.

Why does it matter that another big team didn't make a move for Aurier?
