It will be interesting if Poch plays Foyth in the same position if Sanchez gets injured. The temptation will be to drop Dier back and play Wanyama in CM. But Foyth seems convinced he will get games this season under Poch.

Ledley's Knee!

Playing him in the middle of the three is smart by Poch it gives him those calm experienced heads either side and it also teaches him how to play with Toby on his right and Jan on his left, fast tracking him to be able to play with either in a back four if needed.
Obviously it will be different but there are merits to knowing where they go and what they expect of you.

He had a few unsure moments but what faith in him to throw him straight in away at Everton.

While Ledley was a rolls Royce on the pitch, seemingly gliding around the playing surface, this guy seems a bit more raw and naturally aggressive, this may lead to free kicks given from a desire to win every ball but it's up to Poch to teach him he cannot win every ball.

A good first impression though. with sterner tests (right) around the corner (which is probably why he has given his first start so early)

This is spot on.

I agree to an extent, and Dier did well yesterday. I actually prefer Dier in the 4231 where his dripping my into the defence is part of why our fullbacks can bomb on so well, but in a 3 centre back system we don't need that so I'd prefer Wanyama the hunter gather in that line up.

I just think Dier offers more going forward and helps shield the defence. But we definetly stronger this season as a squad.

Have to win a trophy this year with what we now have.

In my opinion he had a good game. Not great.

In the context of things, it was very impressive as he's young and new to the country. But some people are getting carried away on that performance. I have no doubt he will be a phenomenal CB and he has all the attributes needed to succeed in this league, but if we're judging on yesterday's game alone, then we need to look at the negatives as well as the positives.

I personally believe 99% of the negatives were just down to nerves and him not wanting to fuck up. But even that highlight video on the previous page suggests how the performance was far from great (and they left out a couple more bits from the second half where he looked awkward on the ball).

In conclusion, I genuinely think he will be a great CB and will probably find his Ajax form within the next few weeks. There were very positive signs there yesterday - but judging on this game alone, if Wimmer had played exactly the same way as Sanchez did yesterday, people would've generally said he played quite well. Nothing great. Just good. But as I say, in the context of it all with regards to his age, new country, new league, nerves because he's playing with 2 of the best CB's in the league and doesn't want to look out of place etc, it was very impressive. He will be excellent for us.

Still cant score to save his life, how long can we wait until he starts hitting the back of the net? I say we've already waited too long, get rid.

I think the pace of the game caught him out a couple of times and caught out a couple of times positionally but for a league debut, I'm not sure how much can anyone really expect. Some people want perfection, even TA was caught yesterday by being megged and giving away a foul and he's arguably the best defender in the league.

The way I would compare his performance is to that of Keaneas who cost Everton 25M and has played a couple of EPL seasons and Sanchez didn't come out of them game badly at all.

Will be interesting to see if Dier still drops into the backline to allow Toby or Verts to bring the ball out more. I think we may well see quite a bit of this since it's the next step forward in how our defence and midfield integrate.

Agree in the main with your post. We can only judge a performance in context like you say. Given his age and every other challenge he faced in making his full debut, it was hugely encouraging.

I expected him to be caught out positionally a few times, and to be awkward in possession and distribution because of his youth, nerves and the newness of everything around him. There were far more positives than negatives, so in context an excellent full debut for the player.

Don't agree with your point about if Wimmer had played exactly the same way... There are things that Sanchez showed yesterday that Wimmer couldn't replicate...the pace and recovery, which mean a lot in terms of our defensive options and shape going forward. I'd also say, although Wimmer's good in the air, Sanchez looks a beast, and he's just going to get better.

I just used Wimmer as an example really. I could've put a top defender like Toby or Jan too. I wasn't comparing the 2, I was just saying that if that exact performance was put in by someone else, it would be considered a decent one but not great.

As a performance it was pretty good in context but as as a whole I don't really agree with the people who are saying it was great etc. I do agree though that the signs are there to say he'll adapt pretty quickly and my opinion is he'll become brilliant for us. I wouldn't choose any other defence in the league above our new one.

Think we agree anyway. The boy did good/great! Looking forward to what he gives to the team. Love the fact that Poch trusts him, and I already like a Spurs line-up with a Sanchez on the team sheet. The kid will still be learning his game, and the game in the PL, he'll fuck up sometimes, and we should expect that.

Bigger picture is Aurier, Toby, Sanchez, Verts, Rose options! Good luck getting past that lot, plus all can drive forward, distribute and cross.

Gardner was a more natural defender than Ledley though Ledley was a better footballer and his training and commitment made him a monster.

Gardner on his day was amazing. Sanchez seems more physical and harder though.

No way was Bambi a better natural defender than Deadly.
Led's reading of the game was part of what made his career last as long as it did. If he wasn't such a good natural defender, with his knees, he'd never have lasted so long

As others have said, Ledley improved massively after partnering Naybet for a season at Spurs, and Southgate for England.

It just so happens that Gardner was injured for a significant part of that season iirc.

Before that he had proven himself an excellent footballer but was not the world class CB that history priced him to be. He had been playing not in midfield than u defence for both Spurs and England.

And I stand by my statement that in the very early days, before that pivotal season, Gardner was the more natural defender.

The boy did good. We got a clean sheet, and I don't recall many (any) good chances for Everton. As bomber said it was a fairly easy match to be inducted as Everton posed zero threat.
Let's see how he does against a more adventurous team.
Have high hopes

For a young debutant in a new foreign league, I think he did well.

And that is what should be taken out of this, the signs were extremely encouraging and people don't need to over-analyse his game and point out little errors to try and make a point, he's only going to get better.
