I won't be around in the match thread tonight because my father had a minor heart attack yesterday and frankly I don't think I can even think about watching football tonight.

However, I just want to say COYS and hope for a win and that everyone gets along in here, regardless of the result, that's probably asking a lot but you know, sometimes in life things happen and it gives you some real perspective on everything and what really matters, the words you say to people online could be the last thing you say to them before something bad happens, really has given me some food for thought.

All the best everyone.

Don't think people are saying a draw is good, but it's a CL night in Cyprus. Historically, we are not the team that just wipes the floor with lesser units when abroad. We have struggled in fact so take it for what it is, a CL game where you should never judge the compitiion lightly.
But I'm not judging them lightly, I'm judging them objectively based on facts that are there. People who say "oh, this is such a difficult team" are just spouting off things they feel they have to say before every single match, without actually having gathered insight on their own. But there is no substance, nor real, tangible arguments for WHY they will be difficult. The only arguments I read are "they beat Team X". Well, classical logic dictates that if that's a valid argument, then it should be equally valid to talk about which teams they have lost against. Looking at the matches they have lost, I'm not impressed. The one thing I can come up with that's more relevant, and based on facts, is that they seem to be somewhat skilled in the air this season. That shouldn't initially be a real threat to us, because we don't play that much balls in the air anyway.

Firstly they didn't struggle against Rosenborg and New Saints, they won both those ties with an aggregate score of over two goals difference. Secondly there is a big difference in a team being set up to dominate the game and one to counter and be organised.

Copenhagen and Astana are actually perfect examples of why we need to be absolutely focused on the task in hand. Copenhagen only lost one game in the Champions League groups last season. Meanwhile Astana, who the season before meeting APOEL in the Europa League, were unbeaten at home in a group in the champions league with Athletico Madrid, Galatasary and Benfica.

We need to be focused, particularly away from home, or we could end up with a bloody nose.
You are mistaken, come back with straight facts. Actually, why don't I give them to you. They lost in Norway, (vs Rosenborg) and drew in Wales (vs. Saints).

Rosenborg and Copenhagen are giants in the CL-history compared to Tottenham. Just saying (y)
(y) That depends which part of history you look at. They might be giants in terms of number of successful entries, but they are not more acclaimed in terms of trophies. And at any rate, if Tottenham played in Tippeligaen, I'm pretty sure they would have achieved more CL qualifications even than Rosenborg. There is a relative component to CL participation.

I sometimes wonder if people didn't watch any of our Europa league games over the last decade. There aren't any really easy games in Europe. This will be difficult. Yes we should win but experience has shown us it's NEVER that easy.

Not on tv here in the states i dont think but it is on ESPN3 in the US. Thank fuck for that. Fox's streaming app is almost worse than NBC's. Impossible to get a stable connection on the office internet on them. ESPN's app usually works.
In the US, if you get one of the Fox Regional channels it is on some of those. Its on FoxSports South here in NC.

But nobody seems to want to explain why this specific team is difficult. There is no explanation to what they do that could be difficult to our way of playing. Given total lack of actual explantation, those statements are just cliches that fans feel they have to say. They are a team of high average age (might indicate experience but might indicate lack of pace and energy), with heavy changes in management and players since last season. What is it they do that that makes this so complicated?

The game versus Inter in November 2010 was a piece of piss as I remember it. ;)

Billy Hill agree. 2/5 away from home is a very short price.

Its nothing about what they do its more about what we dont do which is to dispatch of a team that we should in europe. We play poorly and very sloppy far too often in these sorts of games. Nothing to do with what the opposition do. In europe no matter how strong our team is we struggle like mad against these so called "poor" teams. And tonight we have a MUCH weakened side so i dont expect that to change although id live to be proved wrong and to win by 3 goals or more.

Hope your dad's on the mend quickly and (assuming he's also a Yid?) the result tonight will give him a bit of a boost.

I know next to nothing about this team, but generally a side that has a habit of winning (even in a lesser league) will have a decent degree of confidence and team spirit.

OK, so it's only down to us. Ourself. We can decide this? Good. Then there should be no question. How long have we talked about becoming a CL club? And what are we today? Are we a CL club, or we only pretenders? If it's only down to our own performance, tonight, and nothing else can come in the way, we should goddarn use this match to show exactly how much we belong in CL.

I know next to nothing about this team, but generally a side that has a habit of winning (even in a lesser league) will have a decent degree of confidence and team spirit.
That would be true indeed. But this is largely a newly assembled team, rather different from last season. And they haven't started their domestic season all that well.

We're playing away to a European team who have won 11 of their last EUROPEAN 13 home ties, drawn one, lost one. Those are pretty factual facts.
That said...yes I believe we should win it.
