Agree with JB at three, wouldn't surprise me if he ended up opening on Boxing Day though...

Bairstow doesn't keep in the ODI's, and to me Buttler isn't a sensational gloveman, and I see the number 3 position as our weakest point and potentially the most important. If Root isn't going to move up, then I could envisage something like:

Cook
Stoneman
Bairstow
Root
Malan / Hales
Stokes
Ali
Foakes
Woakes
Broad
Anderson

I know what you are saying against Hameed, but it's a common thought (apparently) that seam bowling is his weakness, he may not have failed on slow and low pitches in the sub continent but facing a fearsome quartet on a fast and bouncy wicket in Oz is a different kettle of fish. He's averaged about 19 in the County Championship which is very poor.

Second spinner for me would be Leach, cant keep ignoring the amount of wickets he takes and now he is over any problems that he had with his action he needs to be rewarded with a shot. Crane couldn't get in Hants side early doors this year and has done very little when he has played. Sure he averages over 40 with the ball which again, like Hameed is not worthy of an International call up.

I'm not interested in taking Buttler anywhere near the Test side, but I fundamentally disagree with you on Hales. He can play and he's got an edge to him (a busy **** if you want to put it in @Bus-Conductor speak), coming in at 5 would be spot on in my opinion.

Pretty sure that when Bairstow has been asked before about if he'd relinquish the gloves it was basically 'fuck off'. I'm sure he'd get over it eventually, wouldn't pick the fight currently though.

The way I see it, all the expert opinion, analysis, and selections have just led to a revolving door of batsmen. I wouldn't trust much of what is said presently - I think Hameed himself has said that this year he's had a lot of people want to say a lot of things to him and he's eventually realised it's just filling his head with rubbish. Here we had a batsman who looked pretty solid and at ease with Test cricket. I know his country season has been crap, he might fail in Oz, as have most of our batsmen (Root, Cook 1st tours....) but give him the chance to. But I doubt he will get in anyway.

Hales I suspect will go, he might be a success this time, I think most would agree with you, but I personally would keep the teams separate.

Leach I don't know much about but wouldn't have a problem with, just slight preference for the Leggie (probably because I am one myself...!). Has to though be a) a proper spinner and b) someone who takes the ball the other way to Ali for variety.

Some innings by Moeen there. Second 50 of his ton in 12 balls!

Brilliant by mo yet again a real match winner Ithaca bat and ball.
In any other test team he would be a batting alrounder at 6. You could even argue that he should be in our test team too

Admittedly he did get chucked a couple of pies however that was a joy to watch! His second 50 took three balls less than De Villiers 31 ball ton in 2015 but I can't find out anywhere if it's the fastest 50-100!

It was the fastest 50-100 (12 balls ) according to sky sports

All of a sudden the "filling of the number 3 role" might become the least of our issues...

As an England and Middlesex fan, I've developed a disliking for the south-west these last two days.

Ashes team announced. Gary Ballance! - you have to be kidding me. Top order looks really fragile and will get exploited. Would have taken Hales myself - at least he can crash around 40 before they knock him over.

Ballance is a Root pick. He likes him. I'm not convinced, but then I probably don't know as much as Root.

I do, though, find myself writing off the series and the journeyman batters, with next summer being the time to get the likes of Hameed, Jennings (?), Livingstone, A.N.Other in.

Also, Kumar Sangakkara..... Why is he retiring!? :notworthy:
Maybe he wanted to leave the audience wanting more, and he didn't want to go through a decline that would leave people asking why he's still hanging around. On the other hand, maybe he's been offered a media gig that's just too good to turn down.

If you can, watch the 'Atherton meets Sangakkara' interview. Whatever he does when he retires, it doesn't sound like it's going to be in cricket.
