As fourth seeds we’ve already bucked the trend. We could have won that group but it turned sour after the first Wales game. We’ve done well to recover and need the same spirit again to be in with any sort of chance. I know people don’t like our football, not a great fan myself, but major tournaments always benefit from the Irish being there. Same goes for the Welsh after their memorable Euros but that’s just how it fell this time.

I think it's safe to say that even if Australia do limp past 10-man Syria, they won't be troubling the later stages of the World Cup in Russia.

Even after this, looks like there is another playoff vs a team from CONCACAF.

If the seeding fails the big nations then there is always a dodgy handball goal to be considered.

I think Fifa should organise it so that Australia play England in a playoff so that only one of them is allowed to go to the World Cup.

At least that way one pointless and dull participant will be eliminated early.
