Best pressed we have of the ball in the final third and, though he can be sloppy, he is braver with his passing than most. Offers more than Nkoudou and Sissoko so will improve our options massively when fit. However, with Son's huge improvements he's got some work to do to reemerge as a guest choice after so long out.

I think if he can get back to where he was he offers us something that nobody other than Eriksen does at the moment. That ability to put his foot on the ball and pick out a pass.

I think sometimes with Alli + one of Son/Sissoko/GNK we have too many players who are a bit loose with the ball at their feet, and having one extra composed player on the pitch would make a massive difference to our attack.

Not saying there isn't a time and place for Son/Sissoko, but that extra bit of guile would likely give Kane and Alli even more chances than they get already.

Indeed. But that's incredible to potentially have Lamela, Son, Llorente, Dier/Wanyama/Dembele and Winks as bench options. If you trade out any of them with someone who may be dropped from the current 11 it of course remains equally impressive. Add any additions we may make in January and all of sudden our squad as a whole looks so impressive.

He has pretty much always been very popular with the fans. He really has had some tough times since arriving at spurs and he has always faced them with a great attitude and real dignity imo. Never moans, never hides. I really like him. Fantastic attitude.

People say that the team has improved which is true, but very often Lamela was restricted by our team. His strengths are his vision and use of the ball not running with it or taking people on. He is a very progressive passer, always looking to move the ball forward quickly and get it back. We are now very fluid in the forward areas and he won't be stuck out wide as he was previously. I think he will flourish in this team.

I've always felt that he is more creative than Eriksson, in a different way, because he sees things quickly. Where Eriksen might make 3 or 4 telling passes in a game, Lamela will make 10 simply because he is looking to do that every time gets the ball and is able to turn.

We have been lacking somebody who is able to pick out little passes around the box and go for the return. He is direct and aggressive in his play where Eriksen is a lot more subtle. At the very least he will offer us a different way of doing things.

And apart from all of that, with Lamela you get a guaranteed level of effort for 90 minutes. He never stops. He literally runs himself into the ground every single match. So many times we would be having one of those slow home games and it would be Lamela who would drive us forward and get the crowd going. Whether with a quality pass, a tackle or just some insane 30 second burst of closing down.

Given a couple of months to get fit, he will be like a new signing. He is certainly better than loads of the players who are currently valued at £30-40 million! I'd have him over the likes of Oxalade-chamberlain any day!

Great to see him back.

I was at the City game when he set Eriksen up for the winner. Great memory for me. Lamela made the tackle in the middle then him and Eriksen basically sliced open 6 Man City players defending, with Kompany of all people playing Eriksen on side. Shame he has been sidelined for so long, I really thought that Lamela and Eriksen were developing a nice understanding.

Oh completely, that's why I didn't join the rage babies in their 'we have no depth' tirade over the summer. Fully fit squad, playing 343, our bench looks like this:

Vorm Davies Trippier Wanyama Lamela Son Llorente

That leaves out Winks and Sissoko as current, full internationals who have actually played regularly so far this season. In our realistic first 24 we only have 3 non internationals, Nkoudou, KWP and Gazzaniga, and two of those have represented their country up to u21 level anyway,

That was on Valentine's Day wasn't it? I convinced my girlfriend to come watch at the pub after Valentine's lunch and spent more time hugging the burly bloke next to me than I did chatting to her. Great times.

Has anyone mentioned Lamela going to the World Cup while Sanchez (the bad one, not our one) stays at home?

Not important at all - just made me smile.

I'd suggest there's a long way to go before Lamela is in consideration for the Argentina squad.

He needs to prove he can play for 10 minutes as a first step.

Erik Lamela at his best could help us seal victories vs. the very best teams through his eager, defensive contribution high up on the pitch. The guy stops counter attacks more effectively than a football fan downs a pint.

The less he plays the more misty eyed you fanboys get. The reaction you get in this thread is hilariously predictable. Erik is definitely not the messiah he is claimed to be and I would sell him in a heartbeat.

I dont understand why someone showing support for one of our players is immediately called a fanboy.

I totally understand and see the quality he brings to the team and having a fit Erik back in our squad is a big plus for us.

Do I think he's better than Eriksen? No I don't think he is, but it baffles me when people cannot see what he brings to the team, and by that I mean the positive things.

I honestly don’t understand this line of thinking. Fair enough you don’t see him getting into our best XI. But do you genuinely think he isn’t good enough to make a positive contribution to our squad over a season? That he’d make an overall negative contribution to the point you want him sold?

You'd sell him a heartbeat? Come on. I'd sell Sissoko in a nanosecond, but Lamela is a quality player.

His contract is up in the Summer and we have to decide whether we want to take the 2 year option up. I'm sure we will provided he gets back to fitness and action.

I think you are being harsh though. 2015/2016 - he was superb for us.

If anything, surely his return will provide a kick up the backside to Dele, and will hopefully help him to move on to a new level with the added competition?
