Going into the season I think most would agree dembele/wanyama was our 1st choice CM partnership. With today’s injury news it doesn’t look good for either and we could be without wanyama for a while, and imo dembele sounds like his body has had enough. So what are the options.
The obvious 3 are winks dier sissoko.I don’t think the dembele role is so much of an issue we can mix and match winks sissoko eriksen dele if needed.Actually a shame Onomah has gone on loan.Possibly May Think of recalling him.
The issue for me is DM.Dier will need a rest and there’s no obvious cover.Im thinking we could possibly fast track foyth or even maybe KWP could play there for the odd game.Sanchez is another possible but would disrupt a settled 3.

Shame we couldn't get the Andre Gomes signing over the line on deadline day. We're just going to have to make do until January. Not confident about that though, wasn't Holtby the last first team player we signed in January?

Hopefully we stop pissing about and end the Barkley saga, though if Koeman goes things could change again

Wanyama seeing a specialist may not be all doom and gloom. It may be just a precaution to make sure his recovery plan is working well and planning the completion of his comeback

If Wanyama is out long term that's a real blow.

His dynamism in midfield was a big part of our success last season, and whilst I do like Dier, I just don't think he offers the same all round game as Wanyama.

I'd be happy with Dier and Winks starting most games though, as whilst Sissoko has improved, I don't think he's disciplined enough to play regularly in a midfield 2.

If Wanyama's injury is a serious one though, I'd be looking to buy in January, as I don't think we can rely on Dembele particularly these days either.

Any business in Jan would definitely depend on Dembele as well i agree. Would be a shame to lose both for most of the season.

Who's available that could fit the role though, especially in January?

Well this is a good point.

Buying in January is notoriously difficult (and we are notoriously shit at it) and off the top of my head I'd have no idea.

That Capoue chap at Watford looks pretty good...

Same here. I'm not even sure with Barkley's injury if doing an early deal will help at all. Still it's a squad game and i'm sure we get blood some youngsters or rotate to fill the gap.

Can we recall Josh?, really depleted in cm

Surely depends on the loan paperwork - some deals used to have a recall clause but actually i think this is a lot less common than it's made out to be. So unless both clubs agreed to terminate (similar to how they do in an injury situation) then i don't think there's any guarantees.

Edit - As per @THFCSPURS19 's post, i may stand corrected.

I'm not even sure Barkley is the answer to that particular question. I still see him as an option in behind the strikers, or at best in the Winks' role rather than being able to help with our issues deeper in midfield.

How is his injury prognosis incidentally? I'd still like us to sign him.

Probably better info from some well informed people on here but last i read it was all a bit vague.

Basically it's not been reported clearly IMO whether he's still carrying his hamstring injury or whether he's just been parked behind the scenes as he doesn't want to play for them any more. With the Koeman/team situation as it is, i'm not surprised.

Agreed though - he's not a good fit for the role we're here worrying about but would at least bolster our options in changing the set-up a bit.

Fingers crossed we've been scouting Dembele cover for a while now - his long term fitness must have been questionable for some time, so here's hoping we have a couple of options.
