@Bus-Conductor spot on with Aurrier regarding him being Walker 2 years ago. Thought he would be better then that for us. For me Trippier is our clear no1

I’m really not getting the Rose good reviews.I think he looks a shadow of the player he was and currently a million miles behind Davies.Yes I know he’s been out a long time,so I’m prepared to give him a chance. But he certainly doesn’t look a £60m player to me right now.

its a mixture of him being out long term and davies really stepping up his game. Still think he is carrying a bit of extra timber

He’s been out almost a year and looks much much heavier than when we last saw him

Could take months before we see the best of him (which was fantastic) again or it could even be next season after a good pre season....

I think like Walker and Aurier, Rose is fantastic at getting up and down with purpose, and we all love his chippy competitiveness, but I don’t think he’s ever been consistently fantastic at either end. He’s had fantastic games, but there’s always been a lot of wastage.

Best fb out of all of them in attacking third by a mile is Trippier. In his own third he’s probably not as strong as Aurier, but most games he isn't enough worse than him at defending to not make what he brings offensively worth sacrificing.

Gazzaniga 9 MOM. Fantastic debut. performance Lloris would have been proud of.
Aurier 4.5. Couple of horrendous moments but worked hard.
Sanchez 7 Good stuff. growing in Stature.
Dier 8.5. Excellent first half. Made some crucial tackles and blocks.
Vertonghen 7. Classy player. Very decent game.
Rose 6. Bit rusty but got through plenty of work.
Winks.8 Set our tempo and got us moving forward. Really missed him second Half.
Sissoko 6. Did OK and worked hard.
Eriksen 6.5 Not at his best but still put in a shift.
Son 7. Chadli'esque in his ability to frustrate but then produce a moment of sheer delight.
Kane 7. Looks knackered but still tries his heart out.

Dembele 6. Rusty like Rose but needs the game time.

Gazzaniga made a couple of excellent saves but you can’t ignore his error that should have seen us go a goal down, he also was lucky not to give away a pen early on. Can’t get MOTM IMO.

Re Aurier, it wasn’t just that he gave the ball away for Zaha’s chance when he rounded the keeper but he also just stops chasing Zaha too. Poor bit of play all round.

The old ratings thread chestnut , that ratings would be wildly different if luck had tweaked slightly differently , can surely have rarely been so evident as here .

We beat the bottom club in the Prem basically on a coin flip . MOTM for most , because the Palace attacker missed a completely open goal , made a horrendous error in coming out for a ball he couldn't reach .Zaha puts that in and the full weight of ratings thread criticism would have crashed over him .

The mad luck of that miss and he's MOTM on here !

If our target is genuinely the Prem title , there is little in this match to suggest we have any chance imo .

The contentment in here seems entirely unfounded to me and is based on the tiniest twist of good luck .

Was there somebody other than Gazzaniga who had a good game and didn't make any mistakes? I can't think of one.

On the contrary, grinding out a 1-0 win with a threadbare squad due to injuries and knackered from a massive effort beating the current champions league holders is exactly what title challengers do.

Trippier is better going forward I agree. Defensively imo Trippier doesn't posses good enough recovery or defensive positioning. Its still a toss up between them and it's regarding the opposition who best to play overall personally I'm still leaning towards Aurier.

From the team which played so well v Madrid we made 5 changes to the starting line up and ground out a 1-0 win at home to a side organised to spoil, who had the whole week to prepare undistracted. Pre Pochettino this game was that 0-1 home loss to Stoke, Wigan, Hull, WBA etc.

But in the system we play, with 3CB's (two of them pretty quick too) and the way way play, i.e. dominating possession most weeks, Trippier's speed of recovery isn't as detrimental as Aurier's ability to deliver incisive passes into their box.

As we saw against two of the best/quickest counter attacks, RM and Liverpool, Trippier's offensive ability gained us more than his defensive inabilities cost us.

This is why, as much as I acknowledged Aurier does have decent qualities, is a decent RB, I would happily have spent the next year or two developing KWP than working on Aurier's flaws.

Finally caught up with the game. A very good defensive display at the end of a long tough run of games. By the way I heard today that the last five teams to beat Madrid in Europe failed to win their next game ... not sure if that is true

Finally decided to vote for Eric but it could have been Jan or for Gazzaniga who had an impressive debut.

I don't agree . The point is that this was won on a flip of the coin i.e. could have just as easily gone the other way .50-50

Palace are at the bottom , we can't have matches as close as Palace because we'll lose some of them as we labour against packed defences and winning titles is not about dropping points to teams near the base of the table , especially at home .

You are not giving sufficient weight to the importance pure luck plays in things imo and certainly in the 50-50 Palace game .
It was not encouraging re Prem title for me .

Did you miss the Swansea and Burnley games?

Seems a bit of a bizarre time to bring this up, when we've just won 3 home games in the league on the trot. We're not going to win every home game 4-0. Lower your expectations a little.

Gaza was good but on another day the ref gives a pen firvthat clumsey arm in the opening couple of minutes and Zaha puts that open goal in the onion bag after some bad positioning from Gazza. Having said that he didn’t give away 2 goals and made 2 good saves so he gets a 7. Everyone else, bar Dier, were pretty meh.

How long have you been watching football? What prem champions have you seen that win every game at a canter and don't get an element of luck or grind out some results in a long season when not playing well?

Top Hole.........8.5..........Dier, Verts
Cracking.........8.............Gazzaniga
Nice................7.5..........Sanchez
Not bad...........7.............Winks
OK...................6.............Rose, Eriksen.Dembele
Below par........5.5..........HK, Son(Saved by the goal)
Hmmm............4.5..........Aurier (dangerous), Sissoko(harmless), Llorente

We won't win the Prem without a little luck and winning when we are playing poorly.
This game proves it. Not that we won't win the....or maybe it does. Confused myself now.
Dele did nothing(Joke) and three of our boys got themselves doctors notes until Arsenal. Neat

I don't think Aurier is to bad going forward - defensively though he is all over the place - when he first played my impression was that in order to make up for his weaknesses he relied on agression which can be fine - for me he has no positional sense or intelligence and thouhg for a full back to change to a wing back it is difficult, suddenly he is not taking his lead from the centre backs and he gets lost not knowing whether to go or stay and so often he ends up doing neither. He might improve in time but I have to say I don't fancy him as a player at the moment he seems to be one step from a moment of stupidity and he doesn't look to me to be able to solve his problems on the pitch, though neither does Trippier where as our current best full back albeit a left back Davies has done really well in that area
