Son deserves more than being Poch's Plan B

Hi Guys,

How are you all doing?

We've got a piece on the site today looking at Son Heung-Min and why he deserves more of a starring role in the Spurs line-up.

"Despite his decisive contributions over the last season-and-a-half, the glass ceiling remains at Wembley – one he is unlikely to smash through unless Eriksen or Alli suffer either a significant injury or a dramatic and sudden dip in form.

His qualities are obvious, but Pochettino does not trust him as much as the aforementioned duo and it means that the 25-year-old is forced to wait for his opportunity. However, if Son regularly takes his opportunities when he starts, does he not have a legitimate claim to a starting berth? Sadly, on merit, he doesn’t quite match up to Alli and Eriksen."

Son deserves more of a chance.

Son needs to be more consistent to become deserving of a chance.

I've always been a fan but he is so frustratingly hot and cold and in the position we are looking to be in consistently challenging for honours we can't afford players who you only have a 50/ 50 chance of turning up.

It’s the formation stopping him being a first 11 player.

In the original poch formation 4231 he’d play every week as the left of the 3.

ATM poch favours the 3421 ( wing back ) which means out of our 4 attackers ( Kane, dele, Eriksen, Son ) he’s the obvious choice that will be dropped.

Son is a team player and a squad player. He had thoughts of leaving and Poch set him straight. He’s happy, he’s getting game time and he’s scoring. Quality player, lucky to have him but he’s better off being part of Poch’s plan than being a star man at a club going nowhere.

Consistency is a big problem in his game, he rarely has an average performance, as he is either on fire or absolutely shocking. It reminds me a bit of Chadli, where at one point he is having a quiet game, and then bang! He gets a goal.

That being said, last season in no way shape or form was he the plan B, towards the end he was starting games and finished with 22 goals in all competitions.

Poch has played Alli in a deeper role a few times recently, and looking at our current bench, Son would probably be the player to come in and accommodate that.

Agree with all of the above posts and i'm also not a fan of the title. Sonny "deserves" exactly what he's getting at Spurs because Poch will always reward hard work and willingness to compete, however, inconsistency has always been an issue for Son and he needs to find a way to impact games even when he's not scoring.

To suggest that Sonny deserves more is an insult to Poch in my view.

Everybody is talking about consistantcy. So let's be consistant. The amount of posters that bitch about Alli's consistantcy could not be counted.

Son gets a hard ride in my opinion. He's equally as effective as Alli and the numbers prove it.

We will eventually lose him because of it. He doesn't get a fair and equal chance even though he is clearly as effective. Alli is undroppable; Son is the first to be dropped. I love him, but if I was him I'd want to leave.

When everyone is healthy we have more than 11 players capable of being in the starting XI. This is good.

Son has played in 10 league matches, only Vertonghen, Eriksen, Dier, and Sissoko have played in all 11.

Son is a valuable member of the squad, and continues to earn minutes. Nothing to see here.

Don't think it's fair to call him plan B.

I think Son plays the majority of the matches. He is a starter if we have 2 matches a in a week. And usually he comes off the bench in the 2nd half. So maybe he plays 80% of our games? Hardly a plan B IMO. He might not a be a key first team player like Lloris or Kane... But he is still an "Important first team player" (to steal a term from FM).

And personally... I feel he is happy in that role. I don't see any of the top champions league club where he will always be in the starting lineup, maybe in a mid table team he will be given a key role.

But Son doesn't have an ego, he is happy with the team. We are building something, a team has to be more then 11 players. He is the player we need to keep the depth in the squad.

I am a big fan of him... I hope he stays with us a long time.

Different types of players for me as Dele can be played a little deeper and is able to offer tackling and more physical aspects to the team even if a little off attacking-wise.

Son if off his game doesn't really offer anything. When he is on his game he is dynamite.

And as I've said before I'm a big Son fan but when he is woeful he is BAD whereas Dele can contribute in other ways.

Son is one of the most effective and underappreciated players we have. The guy gets criticized for being hot-and-cold, but the fact is the way he plays - which is high risk/high reward - is crucial to us having another dimension, tactical flexibility, and end product. You have to accept that not everything will come off for this type of player. And we would be incredibly limited without him because his high-octane approach to racing at or past defenders isn't something we have an abundance of.

So I wouldn't describe him as being the back-up option, anymore than I wouldn't pick a specific positional 1st teamer among Dier, Wanyama, Winks. It's horses for courses and our dynamism from game-to-game and within games is the most laudable aspect of the development/evolution of the side and the manager.

Is Dier a back up midfielder or back-up defender or a first teamer? Is Winks filling in for Wanyama? Who are the back-up wing-backs? I'd say we have a first 15 or 16 rather than a first 11. And that's a feature, not a bug.

Son is probably among the best improvise shottakers/finishers in the PL but his decision making and creation efforts are wildly inconsistent leaning towards poor IMO. That is elite squad player realm. I love him to death and he will save our rear many times. When Dele is not contributing at his usual levels he's exactly what we need to bring in, rotate, and grind games out.

Was part of my point. Almost the whole site talked of how much Alli stank at the start of the season and that when he's off he contributes nothing.

I think Alli's best perfomance(s) have been as part of the midfield 3. Where you wouldn't play son.

South Korean men are required to complete at least 21 months of military service before they turn 28, meaning Son can play abroad until July 2019, although there have been examples of delays and exemptions being granted.

Tricky situation for him.and the club. Son is now 25...

He'll never be the main man but I sure appreciate the contribution he makes.

He still gets plenty of football, plenty of goals too. He's an integral part of the first team and helped us hit the heights in the second half of last season.

He will only get better too.

It's a squad game now and Son is an important part of the squad. He does however remind me of Chadli in that he can drive you nuts but is always likely to chip in with a vital goal.

I'm pretty sure that military service is required to be completed before turning 31, not 28 but military service usually lasts 24 months not 21 so he realistically has to begin at 28 not 26. I think could in theory avoid the draft until he is 33 and essentially use his wealth to pay of any fines etc, but not sure that would go down well.

His best shot of not doing military service would be to play in the asian games at the end of this season and win gold. Technically possible as it happens after the world cup, but being a world cup year unlikely he will do both.

Or getting a medal in the Olympics in 2020, granting him exemption just in time.

All of this would of been avoided if Bayer Leverkusen wern't so selfish as to not let him go to the Asian games back in 2014, South Korea won that tournament and all their players are now exempt.. Apart from Son..
