Excellent read and I thought that "It was also really interesting to see how he handled his confrontations with Diego Costa. He stands right up for the team and himself but he’s not looking for a row and there was emotional control. You could even sense some respect coming back his way from Costa and you don’t see that often" was absolutely spot on.

That's a great interview with Dier.

It shows that doing the book has been a good idea in parts by Poch. It's allowed situations like Dier's to be explained fully. No wonder there was itk in the summer that Dier was more likely to sign a new contract than leave. No doubt Man Utd were after him (tapped him up) but he doesn't sound like he's inkling for a move at all now.

I was just about to say it wouldn't surprise me if he captains England at some point over the next couple of games.

Of course we need Eric Dier. He embodies much of what this team are about.

I thought he played superbly last night. He played the holding midfielder perfectly but I doubt it will be highlighted by the media/other team fans

E.g. Filling in at left centre back the times in the second half when Maguire dribbled forward.

I was Always wanyama over Dier as a DM.But was interesting last night that Dier almost played for England how spurs have been playing as a central pivot. If you play like that the player has to be able to ping the ball around as winks has done and dier did that very welllast night.Honestly Think Dier has come on leaps and bounds since last season. For me wanyama isn’t that type of player he’s much more a destroyer and give it short to a playmaker. But poch now seems to be favouring a ball playing DM.Will be interesting when wanyama is back how it works out.

Think he’s at fault for 2nd goal. Should have been round on cover and got to lacazette. In fact Sanchez has to come from one position wider to get round on cover and nearly gets to him.No idea why Sanchez doesn’t play in middle and dier on right. 2nd goal never happens if Sanchez is in the middle not on the right. However improved Dier has been he still switches off at crucial moments.

I'm not a massive Dier fan, but Ive been very balanced on my opinion on apparent interest in him from Man Utd.

He has done a decent job for us, and his adaptability was invaluable in a thin squad. Hence he always makes a lot of appearances.

But, he doesn't feel me with confidence in possession like the rest of the team. He isn't incredibly mobile. And when him and Wanyama play next to each other he doesn't seem to know what his job is.

Hypothetically, If we had to sell 2 of our top 13-14 players from last season, Walker and Dier would have been pretty much on top of the list for a lot of people I feel, especially at the sums being quoted.

As it is, we just made two great signings, leaving most of Dier's adaptability redundant.

We got an incredibly good player at RB for half what we sold Walker for.

We got a seemingly excellent young centre half.

EDIT: Every player has period where they are off form.

It would appear that Diers role for us now, is even more that of a 2nd tier sqaud player.

With this in mind if we could get 60m now, to use elsewhere, would you take it?

I would in a heartbeat.

I'm not sure.

I'm not sure whether you're a troll or a plank.

Ed is a leader. There's a reason why he is interviewed on TV. He is a good player, a leader, versatile, can be aggressive when necessary and is not unintelligent. He is a player that can switch from CB, to DM, to RB as necessary in any game. He gives us the flexibility to change formation in any game to suit the circumstances.

It's not difficult!

EDIT: There are some players who bring qualities to the team even when they are not on form. In my opinion Eric Dier is one of them.

Maybe that’s Dier inconsistency as opposed to our fickleness.
He’s 23 and still learning his trade, a good 4-5 years from his prime. He plays in a position where the slightest error will be punished severely.

I’m going with fickleness.

This. A CB doesn't usually hit his prime until mid to late 20's. Let's face it only a year or two ago people on here were questioning our purchase of Verts. Now he's the best CB. There is no end to the fickleness of footie fans!

I don't think people have ever questioned Verts, I certainly haven't.

No, I appreciate that, I was trying, and failing, to point out that a couple of years ago people were writing him off, but he now is, arguably, the best CB we have. But he is now 30 years old, whereas Dier is just 23. He is nowhere near his peak as a CB yet he is an England International and was Captain last week, albeit as a DM. That shows he has considerable leadership skills, something we need with such a young team.

I accept that, like all players, he has good games and poor games. But he is still very young and has skills and talents that we desperately need. He is relatively comfortable in 3 different defensive positions and that gives us the ability to change our formation in the middle of a game to suit the situation or tactics of our opponents. That is not something we should give away without a serious struggle and at a great cost to the buyer.
