Well done to Liverpool. They've identified weaknesses in their squad and as a club have been decisive.. Same with the Naby Keita signing. What Liverpool is doing is building a squad to compete with City/United/Chelsea. I think they have done excellent business in their front 4 as well. Salah and Mane' being prime examples.

The cost would be offset possibly by the sale of Coutinho in any case. I have no doubt that their scouting network is/have identified his replacement too.

This is a big club mentality and a team that is determined to be at the top. No stupid transfer tactic of waiting for bargains to materialize... Waiting for other bigger clubs to do their busuness etc.

They literally have every intention of securing top 4 and winning trophies by having a quality Squad.

I think calling them a force is a little bit of a stretch. I mean they're above us by 1 point and we've been fairly average this season all things considered so... not really a force.

On topic, VVD improves them, no doubt. He's better than what they have. He does not however even come close to fixing their problems. He is not a leader (at least not what I've seen of him). They need leaders in that back line and a whole change of their defensive set up. Not to mention they needed a better GK more.

So it strengthens them but not that much more I'd guess. We'll see though, who knows? Sadly it could be that just the idea of them signing such a player gives them a confidence boost.
I don’t think you can look at him in isolation, but at what both he and Keita will bring down their centre. On his own VVD won’t solve their issues, but with Keita in front of him I think their spine is hugely strengthened.

I hope I’m wrong because I absolutely detest those ****s

After twelve and a half thousand posts this thread is now redundant.

People wanting us to not laugh at Liverpool anymore.

It's kind of funny that they're overpaying for VVD, but it's also going to drive prices up for the rest of us again.

Although I think they have overpaid, I have to say that I agree with this. They are trying to fix their problems. I don't want to come across as moaning, as it is not my intention in any way, but I think we are in a difficult spot whereby we don't seem to want to try and compete because we believe the market is inflated, however unless we build a squad to compete, we won't. City and United (seemingly for now) have taken big strides ahead of us with their spending, we can sit here all we like and say they have spent too much on this player or that player, we have done amazingly well to get together the squad we have on a relative shoestring, but over time eventually the tide of spending will take the other teams past you.

Again, although I don't rate VVD THAT highly and think they have paid too much, what it does seem to show is that they are serious about trying to compete at the top table...bear in mind this is a direct threat to our CL place. If we can keep our place this year, I think we will have no choice but to start spending to keep our CL place, let alone challenge for the title.

We need to stop signing players like Llorente and N'Koudou.

Cant agree more. We ( club and Supporters) need to understand the market has changed... Tv deal money etc ensured this. We got it right with Sanchez and i want more of this type of signing.

I absolutely detest our net spending culture which so many of our supporters use as a point of pride. There is no trophy for net spending. Im not suggesting we spend stupid money too. Its what Rose was referring to in his Google comment... Pay peanuts and you get monkey's..

And just like clockwork, every time our rivals buy a player we get the same old posts about ambition and competitiveness.

Amazing how many people there are willing to bend over and whore themselves out for the filthy lucre offered by oil slavers and debt miners.

Wow Sanchez is such a steal from Ajax. Going to be the best centre back there is. We have Super Jan and Toby the best centre backs in the EPL for a few years now and of course we have Eric Dier plus the wonder kid Foyth. VVD would struggle to get a game with us so good luck to Liverpool and great business by Southampton again

Virgil van Dijk's ratings show serious career progression:

> The way he wangled a move away from Groningen at the first available opportunity: 6
> The way he wangled a move away from Celtic at the first available opportunity: 7.5
> The way he wangled a move away from Southampton at the first available opportunity: 9

No wonder he's always praised for his pace.
