You're missing the point I was making, and taking the quoted part out of context...which was whether Liverpool spending silly money should make Levy feel guilty about a contract that was agreed 2.5 years ago.

Not a case of feeling guilty. It’s about being realistic moving forward. If that means selling him as you’re not going to compete for what he wants, so be it

This is the crux of it, im not sure its the world ending scenario that a lot of people are making it out to be.
We'll have had 4-5 years out of an excellent defender that we paid very little for.

I also don’t buy into the “The defence has been fucked since he was injured’ narrative. No, we’ve not had a settled team since he and others were injured.

Sánchez was suspended, full backs been switched a fair bit, Dier in and out of defence, midfield ahead of them constantly changing due to injury/work load, change in formation, etc. The idea that him being out alone is the reason for a downturn in form at a time we have consistently had an iffy patch under Poch I find hard to swallow.

Also the fact that Jan has been by far our best defender this season and arguably last seems entirely lost on the media

I’m pretty sure they were discussing a perminant move for him and had some kind of agreement in place when we “swooped”. Honestly if City came in for him do you honestly think he wouldn’t be incredibly interested?
There was no agreement in place. If Southampton was his only offer, he would have likely signed for them, as he was getting no regular games at Atleti. We didn't "swoop". Atleti wanted to sell him and we bought him.

Agreed to a point, no agreement, altho I think swoop is pretty accurate. He’d had a great season, both sides were happy with arrangement, they messed up assuming, we took advantage.

The point remains, tho, Southampton thought they had him and he bumped them for a better offer. We can’t be too upset if he does it again as it’s entirely in character

If the market stayed the same and Toby maintained current forn what would he actually be worth at 30 ? Can’t see anyone paying more than £40m. So the club are probably pretty chilled and wouldn’t see it as a disaster.
Fucking hell, the boards filled with the nephews of Bob Lord! Nay lad, thou'll play for £5 a week or be down the pit!

100k a week on a 5 year deal. Pay players what they are worth. The club can easily afford it. They've been regularly stealing off the fans with CL prices for the third most successful club in London!

There were no arrangements for any side to be happy or unhappy with(you've agreed there was no arrangement, then stated there was an arrangement!). How could they mess up something that had never happened? Southampton might have had an understanding on their part, not completely reciprocated on Toby's part.

Did Toby tell Southampton he would sign for them, before Spurs showed an interest? No, but understandable that he would have been willing to, in light of no other offers(which is quite incredible, even more than Dele, with a season's outstanding PL performances under his belt).

There's also no truth that Southampton are going to rename themselves as Liverpool Academy.

You start off laughing at Bob Lord and within about three lines you've turned into him!

Jan was last season too, he is the best defender at the club in my opinion.

Just because there’s no official arrangement doesn’t mean someone can’t be unhappy that it didn’t turn out how they wanted. Southampton were clearly going to make an offer and dawdled under a misapprehension that it was a formality. Silly them. It’s not a contradiction tho.

You have no idea what Toby told Southampton just as you have no idea what conversations he’s had with Levy. Pokerface Poch will tho, whatever he says

There was a deal in place for Southampton to sign him but for whatever reason they missed it. Alderweild was also keen on a permanent move to Southampton, but I think we did a bit of head turning, probably with the help of Verts. It was a fuck up on Southaptons part, but we swooped alright.

They didn't dawdle. What difference would it have made, making an offer? Toby wouldn't have snapped their hand off in desperation. Even if he wanted to, his agent's advice would have been to wait, on the back of one season's impressive display in the PL.

Silly Southampton, with their impressive transfer dealings. Pound for pound, easily out-performing Spurs. If they could have kept all of their players, regular CL qualifiers and possible title winners. I'd have loved to see it, and that's speaking as someone attacked in a pub there, after a game(May 1981 1-1).

What we are telling you is all fact, I don't see what's so hard to get. I'd go as far to say that we probably contacted Madrid with our intent to buy Toby allowing them to stall the deal .

its Atlético Madrid WTF? Yes it is fact, google is marvellous, this was all widely reported at the time.

They had an option, they failed to meet it, we came in after Toby saying playing with Verts would be a big factor and we got him, even after a last ditch attempt by Southampton. I recall they CEO being mighty pissed and said our transfer wasn't lawful or something, that's why I think we contacted Atletico Madrid with out intention to buy at a price above the fee agreed with Southampton.

Like it's Chelsea London or London West Ham.

It's Atleti, look it up. Maybe it's a Spanish thing.

There's also no club called Inter Milan. An English thing. It's Internationale.

It's all lies lol
Sure, Atleti took less money from Spurs than Southampton. Those mugs there, eh, letting players dictate transfer fees to them. What's that thing kids used to do? "Chinny, chin chin" mimicking Jimmy Hill.

Les Reed is Sporting Director(or similar), not remotely CEO. Telling the fans what they want to hear.
