Alli said: “We speak a lot, the manager and myself, and my form is not really something I think about too much. But it’s always nice to prove people wrong.

“At 21-years-of-age when you set your standards as high as I did the last two years it’s not always the case that you’re going to be able to reach them all the time.

“Some people think if you’re not scoring or assisting you’re playing badly, but I think I criticise myself all the time, even (after Southampton) I think I can do better, I can do more for the team so I think it’s just working on myself and my own game.

Dele Alli has held heart-to-talk talks with Mauricio Pochettino about his form and disciplinary record.

Alli claims he has become a victim of his own success because he has sometimes struggled to maintain the high standards he has set himself.

Tottenham midfielder Alli, who ended a barren run of ten games without a goal on Boxing Day, has been under the microscope after two X-rated tackles raised doubts about whether the frustration had got to him.

Alli was lucky not to be sent off for horror challenges on Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Burnley’s Charlie Taylor as his frustrations seemed to be reaching boiling point.

But after a return to form and goalscoring ways against Southampton, England’s brightest midfield hope insists he is his own biggest critic.

Alli said: “We speak a lot, the manager and myself, and my form is not really something I think about too much. But it’s always nice to prove people wrong.

“At 21-years-of-age when you set your standards as high as I did the last two years it’s not always the case that you’re going to be able to reach them all the time.

“Some people think if you’re not scoring or assisting you’re playing badly, but I think I criticise myself all the time, even (after Southampton) I think I can do better, I can do more for the team so I think it’s just working on myself and my own game.

lli has gained a reputation for having a short fuse because of his disciplinary record, having served a European ban, a retrospective ban and also a suspension for England after his one-finger salute at Wembley.

That has definitely set him apart as something of a marked man for referees but he was probably lucky - especially with his horror challenge on De Bruyne - not to see red at Manchester City.

But Alli insists that the criticism of his challenge on Burnley full back Taylor was harsh as both players were going for the ball.

He added: “People can say what they want. I think the tackle at Burnley you know we both went into it the same, the ref made a decision and that’s the way it is.

“These things happen in football, I think you’ve just got to focus on yourself every game and look at what you can improve every game and training session.”

This has been bugging me for weeks, who is this guy talking to Alli? 13:53 in the video.

Trying to not look into it but I can't help but feel if that is someone from City who knows what he could be telling him, could just be saying good game but even still, I don't like the look of it.

Just had someone say to me that Lingard is better than Alli, and he's not even a United fan.

He is a moron, but not a united fan

Funnily enough iv has the same debate with a Utd pal of mine, the basis of his argument is that Lingard has scored more than Alli this season...Alli scored more last year than 25 year old Lingard has in his whole career.

Not even Lingards mum thinks hes better than Alli.

Silly, silly boys.

Bit paranoid there lads....

Why is it paranoid to suggest that Man City might be tapping up a young talent in Alli subtly and trying to turn his head?

Do you think they are they above this sort of thing? My entire point was, who is it? Does anybody know?

Utd fans are an odd bunch.

When they win their players are the high and mighty....

Martial > Sterling
Herrera > Kante
Rashford > Mbappe
Lukaku > Kane
Lingard > Alli
Pogba > KDB

Yet when they lose or draw, the players aren't good enough and the manager needs another 200m.

At the start of the season their fans were talking about the title. How in the last two years they won the transfer window. If so why did they finish 6th and why are they sliding towards a top four battle?

This season Lingard has been better than Alli.

He's scored six goals in the last month. Before that he was on four in four months.

Fair play for recent games but one month could just be a purple patch. Dele Alli is having his poorest season and has just two less goals and more assists.
