Bit sad that you both "Can't wait" for that. Maybe you should try and get some genuine excitement in your lives, rather than eagerly anticipating the reaction to a poor performance on a web forum,

He is very good when the entire team is on it defensively. It reminded me of the Liverpool game where he was very aggressive and chased players around while chipping away at their ankles. He needs to be aggressive, when he's not, he ends up backing off players and gets skinned.

Even better on the ball yesterday than usual as well. Fantastic aggressive and creative passing throughout the game.

But that adds to the entertainment value here.

Can't believe the criticism Trippier gets. His footballing intelligence wipes the floor with most full backs in the league. Probably got the best delivery of any in the league and when he plays as aggressively as he did last night he's in the top 3 or 4 in the league.

I've got no doubt Aurier will keep improving but we shouldn't even consider moving Trippier on, he's a solid performer and good team player.

Agreed. I think generally when he's filled in at RB he's been very good. A couple of not so great games and for some reason the whole perception of him changes. I do sometimes have my concerns with him, even yesterday initially when it was him and Eriksen doing the defending down that side I was thinking it was an overly tame combination on that side but for every concern of him that I'll have I'll also have a different kind of concern with Aurier.

Nobody has ever had a problem with his footballing intelligence. I have only ever seen his defensive ability questioned.

Awful first 20 minutes, brilliant remaining 70. Took advantage of no protection for Young on United's left hand side. Was akin to when Benitez left Maicon up against Bale in the home game of the CL in 2010/11.

like most fans I rate the guy as a solid 7 out of 10. A managers dream the way he trains and plays tactically and love what offers going from a delivery. But you feel he'll never have the physical attributes to be top 4 starting/champs league quality.
And usually an "oh no" when you see a Sanchez, Zaha, Isco, Bale on the team sheet against him. Not personal but you perceive a weakness in the 11.

Last night however he went above and beyond, and it wasn't an "out of his skin" performance either. He looked like he could do it all the time.

I noticed he started using his brain vrs Sanchez, giving him space when he was being faced and closing him down quickly when he wasn't. Also on the physical side some of his tackles were akin of a solider diving on a grenade. And against Sanchez/Lukaku who are revered for their ability to ride tackles.

I love players who use their brain to win the game / know their strengths and weaknesses. And because of that yesterday he didn't really have any weaknesses. May never become the star player but certainly can be part of a start team if he keeps that up

Was excellent last night. Offensively, we know he has good crossing ability and in general can pick a good pass, especially when playing into space.

The question marks have been dribbling past players, and dealing with a tricky and/or pacey winger.

The stat before last night was that one 'take on' he had made this season was when he was actually going backwards, whereas last night he seemed to have a bit more confidence and agility and run through clusters of players, rather than just shift the ball and wait to get in space to receive and cross the ball. If that side of his game continues then he will be an extremely good full back.

And in terms of his defensive work, he had Sanchez in his pocket. Was slightly more troubled by the more direct style of Martial at the start of the second half, but not for long. Outstanding game.

Trippier really frustrates me. Today he was brilliant, and was against Real Madrid as well. When he is focused and agressive he can be a really top player but other times he seems like a weakness. If he could consistently play to this level we wouldn't miss Walker at all. Hope he kicks on.

...Walker just fell asleep and got burned against Burnley...Trippier doesn't look so bad now...

Aurier got skanked exactly the same way, but even more often by Bertrand and Redmond at Southampton, little one-two's that left him dangling whilst they got in behind. Everyone seems to not notice it when it's Aurier though. When it happens to Trippier it's because he's a defensive liability...

I don't think Trippier is bad defensively, there's really not much in it between him, Auroer and Walker (you only have to watch Walker today to see an example of him getting done ball watching for the goal, and by a quick player and we all saw him get given torrid times by players like Martial, Bolasie and Zaha etc) and when we are front foot pressing, Trippier actually does it more intelligently than those two, he just lacks Walker's physicality, which combined with his pace enabled him to recover better than most RB's in defensive situations.

Trippier rarely actually has individually bad games. He's a pretty consistent player. When we have nightmares, like City away, it's moe part of a collective thing, when we don't get the pressing right, and leave our FB's totally exposed to some of the best wide attacking players, he can have a torrid time, but then exactly the same happened to Walker there when we got slabbed 5 goals a few seasons ago under Poch.

He lacks the ultimate pace/physicality of Walker, but the way Poch sets us up, I think his positive attributes - superior intelligence, clever pressing, composure on the ball in forward areas, ability to actually play through balls as well as hit superb crosses (often first touch - which Walker could never do) outweighs his deficits most weeks. We are generally a possession, front foot, play the game front the middle of the pitch onwards team, our FB's - depending on the combination - are effectively attackers, more than defenders, as long as they are competent defensively, then being able to contribute to the high press and and attacking game play is vital. Trippier does this better than most around - which is why he vastly outperforms others in this league offensively.

And to be clear, this is from someone who would have happily cashed in on him 18 months ago, 18 months ago I would never have picked him head of Walker (despite my opinion of Walker being flawed), but once he actually started getting games, he won me over, I understood why Pochettino started giving him games, and Pochettino himself referenced Trippier's intelligence in his book.

I can't actually remember a RB having a more impressive phase for us than that of Trippier's in the second half of last season - probably since Danny Thomas back in the mid eighties.

I'm not the biggest fan and I personally prefer Aurier, but if a player can't retain his place after a performance like the one against United then football really is a cruel sport. You're only as good as your last game and he's earned the right to start against Liverpool and prove he should be first choice, in my opinion.

If he starts and has a bad game, Aurier will come back in and he can have no complaints. At least give him the chance, though.

We need Aurier’s pace against Liverpool though. Horses for courses.

Thought he had another good game, couple iffy moments but nullified Mane for the most part. I did miss 20 mins before half time though

Think he had another good game. Good outlet when attacking, and did well enough when defending.

It's a good battle between him and Aurier at the moment.
