I thought that was a pretty strong side to be honest. I was disappointed we didn't press them better, and force the kind of errors that we could capitalise on and expose them more first half. And the players out there were all of suitable quality to make better use of the sistuations and chances they did create second half.

I'm not apoplectic with rage, but I wasn't overly impressed with much of it either.
As individuals it was a strong side but how many minutes did those individuals have playing together? Especially during this season. Then factor that Lamela, Wanyama, Alderweireld, Winks and Rose are all coming back from long term injuries in vetting degrees, Llorente has had very few minutes, Foyth even fewer and is new to the country and it all becomes disjointed. I actually found the football relatively watchable in the most part, the pressing pretty decent and the motivation levels vastly improved from the initial fixture.

At the massive risk of being shouted out of here, I thought Sissoko did OK, he was always available, keep the ball moving, often quickly and was pretty much all over the pitch. I'm not saying it was a fantastic performance by any means but he did as well as most and wasn't anywhere near as bad on the night as some people are suggesting against opposition that weren't difficult to play against. Yes, he gave the ball away sometimes but then again so did a number of our players, it just (IMO) sticks in the memory more because we're looking for it.

Often times he just gets stick because he's Sissoko and I think last night was one of those times.

There. I said it. Should I feel dirty?

I'm with you on this. Poor guy gets so much hate. He works, uses his physical attributes, and plays simply. He's never going to stand out technically, but maybe that's the point as we have plenty of others who do? Mind you, I used to be in the minority of one who thought Vinny Samways was a great player, so my opinion is worth fuck all.

I don't hate the guy at all. But saying he doesn't need a level of technical competence is ridiculous. And that is the issue here. I shouldn't be watching a footballer playing at the very highest level of the sport, getting paid 4.5m a year who has a worse set of technical skills and cognitive football functionality than I - and many of us, no doubt - have.

I don't hate him at all, but I am exceedingly pissed off with our manager for choosing to give him so much pitch time when we've got a bunch of talented kids and other squad players who can't get a look in because "they are not ready for this level" and I am also not going to to start muttering platitudes about him "not needing to be of a certain technical standard" because IMO everyone playing this - very highest of levels - should be of a certain technical and footballing-cognitive standard as a bare minimum. He does not come close to that minimum. No football team striving to be at the top needs a player who makes the ordinary look arduous.

I don't really think I was scathing though. It was all a bit "OK" nothing more was my general opinion.

All this talk of "pub team" level is pretty disrespectful to the opposition.

Years ago I remember watching an actual pub team take on Newcastle for a TV show, when their main striker was Lualua I think it was. Decent team but no world beaters. Newcastle had put about 8 past them in about 15 mins, and didn't look like they had got out of 1st gear.

Vorm - 6.5 - not much to do made one decent save.

Aurier -7 - Made some good runs, contributed to the goals.

Foyth - 6.5 - Clearly has a lot of potential, not much to do generally handed things well but was out-muscled a few times.

Alderweireld - 7- Solid, good distribution, good to have him back

Rose - 7.5 - Early in the game he had a tendency to go for the easy but wrong option, got better as the game went on, took people on regularly, rather than going for the early cross, haven't seen that in a while. Good performance

Wanyama - 7 controlled the midfield

Winks - 6 Did what he needed to do, passed the ball simply, needed a bit more zip though and a little bit quicker.

Sissoko - 7 Good movement and good energy. Goal came from a good and accurate cross being deflected into the net.

Lamela -8.5 Scored and showed good vision all night, always trying to do things, however, should of released the ball a bit quicker a few times.

Son - 8 Wonderful running, wonderful player.

Llorente - 5 he did well to hold the ball up and got in good positions all night, but again often made poor decisions in the final third and shold of scored at least a goal

Eriksen - 8 almost set up a few goals

Dele - 7 some lovely play, should of scored but looked good

Walker Peters - 6 good going forwards but in only a few minutes was far from comfortable defensively. Clearly a talented player but in the two games against Newport can see why he is not quite ready to truly compete with our current fullbacks.

I'm going to be honest but does anyone else think Winks as gone back to type with his displays.

When he first came onto the scene he was very brave on the ball, passing the ball forwards looking to play players in, these days he's happy just to pass the ball sideways and backwards.

Do you think he's just easing himself in or gone back to default mode for a typical English Midfielder?
TBF that was all that was needed today. There was no rush to score goals, there is a reason Newport created only two chances all game, Winks was part of that. It wasn't a great game but he did his job.

On another commenting on Vorm's sideways distribution mimicking Lloris, well of course he was 'mimicking' Lloris its clear that our distribution from the back is coached, if people have problems with the nature of our distribution from the back they need to look at Poch not the goalkeepers.

Not Sissoko bashing but who else played worse than Sissoko tonight apart from Llorente? I thought Winks and Wanyama were average at best but both were better.

I know Sissoko ‘haters’ often get accused of scapegoating but sometimes I think the opposite is happening with the ‘lovers’. They want him to do well so badly that they’re seeing things that aren’t there. Purely based on tonight’s game, he misplaced lots of easy passes and miscontrolled the ball several times. Almost all of his crosses from wide were low and didn’t beat the first man. The cross for the goal was decent and looked like it was going to Lamela if the defender hadn’t put it in but there weren’t many other positives tonight.

Llorente was poor tonight. I feel sorry for him because he’s shown over the years how good a footballer he is but when you’re back-up to Kane and never get minutes, plus the fact we never play to his strengths when he does play, it’s sad to see how poor he is with us now.

Everyone else bar Winks and Wanyama, who I thought were average at best, played well. Lamela my motm. Aurier & Son very good, subs played well too. Foyth looked good too bar that one shit pass first half. Good to have Toby and Rose back.
Thats a very unfair way of judging players though, I mean ultimately no one played particularly badly tonight, Llorente should of scored so will get harshly treated for that but we played an inferior team off the park.

Sissoko was part of that, and in fact he directly contributed to a goal. I know some think it was a fluke, but the truth is if that ball was not intercepted it would of most likely have left Lamela with a tap in, or force Newport into another tough interception. For that move Sissoko played the right ball with good pace and also got into a very position to play that move. So you have to give some credit for that.

The old word you want to use about a midfielder when they are shit, but you want to be kind.

A few other industrious players:

Jordan Henderson
Mark Noble
Every 90's English central midfielder
Those players while far from amazing are far from shit. Both are captains of their respective clubs, Henderson a regular starter and england international for a top 6 side.

Mark Noble at his best was always more of a 'creative' midfielder, and I use that term lightly, more than an industrious one. He is also a two time winner of 'hammer of the year'. He is not great but was in the past very much a decent player for a team of West Ham's level.

I mean both are pretty poor examples of 'shit' players which serve to undermine your point rather than prove it.

The only reason I said that was in direct response to Bullet’s point about him being better than a few others last night. I was genuinely intrigued to know who he thought had a worse game in their respective positions, Llorente aside.

Yep I even mentioned his cross was going to Lamela if it hadn’t been deflected in the post you quoted. Honestly have nothing against the guy and I would love him to prove me and other doubters wrong and succeed here because it means Spurs are benefitting from it, but I can only call it how I see it. It’s just my opinion, we all have one.

It’s weird. The posters who have been around for 12/13 years or more will know that I spent a lot of time in Spurs chat over the years defending players who were being abused on here. And there were lots!! I’ve been a season ticket holder for 37 years so I’ve seen a fair few players over there in my time. I just can’t bring myself to support Sissoko (based on his football alone) on here after watching what I feel are constant poor performances time and time again. Of course I will say if he had a good game or has done something really well, but in my opinion that can be counted on one hand. The nicest thing I can say is that he probably would’ve done a much more decent job for us in the 90’s. Not his fault he’s played lots. If he didn’t put in the effort he’d be much more a target for the boo boys and I sincerely hope they refrain from properly booing him because he does show effort and desire.

Hmm I'm 100% certain Poch knows more about football and the qualities of the first team players and the youth players than anyone on this forum...I don't care how long people's posts are or how many tactical appraisals they do.

To constantly question him is even more baffling to me, he's obviously picked because he has attributes that are invaluable to the squad at this moment in time. He even sad it , transitioning defense to attack. Generally because he he's fast, fit and strong enough to move with or without the ball from deep in our own half into their final third and vice versa

The worse Spurs player of the last 10 years , what nonsense. I could name 10 plus mf players that wouldn't get anywhere near the squad. Even someone like Tom Carroll would never get a sniff in over sissoko. He can pass a loverly sideways ball but he would offer nothing else poch demands

Worst player on the pitch, the Dude made 2 key passes last night, one rose should have finished on 22 minutes.
He's driving run and cross directly caused us to score the 1st goal. But that's not what sticks out for people, it's the misplaced pass or the comedy missed shot.

He wasn't great at all, but I've looked at every neutral match day rating on the net and only one paper I saw rated him lower than a 6 out of 10 (5)

He's technical poor with the ball 100% more so than anyone else in the squad but the pitch forks after every game whether he plays or not is so boring it will be nice when he's sold just not to Have to see match threads full of the over the top bile and nonsense match ratings

Probably just transfer over to Eric Dier no doubt though

In a 5-a-side team of Friedel, Dawson, Dempsey, Sissoko and Bent, you wouldn't even make the bench sunshine.

A five a side team of Friedel, Dawson, Dempsey, Sissoko and Bent it would be me on the pitch, fat Brad in goal and a four man bench.

I would like to see Sissoko at Goals. Would he run rings around normal punters? When I was younger, Victor Moses played with a load of us and he was actually turd, but suppose he phoned it in.

That’s not what my post said. I meant relative to the players around him, he is not going to stand out technically. Incidentally, why do you think Poch keeps picking him? Out of spite? Or because he sees something you don't?
