Too much drama. We were quietly confident we could do a deal behind closed doors. Yanited understandably putting a statement out, that they are not looking to sell him. That would change if someone came in with a clear 70-80m firm offer. He is not worth that much, so why risk it?. He is going to have to run down his contract, and force the hands of Yanited.

We need to move on, and believe that we did that a while back, but keeping our eyes peeled on the rear view mirror regarding this particular situation.

Translation 1: "Odds are we will end up firing Jose anyways so why sell a future star?"

Translation 2: "Fuck you. You get out when we say you get out."

Translation 3: "It will take mega money to prize him away we promise any potential suitors. Ignore his agent."

Translation 4: "New big 'keep happy' contract incoming"

Take your pick. I guess multiple could be true

5. Make Martial the bad guy, Utd had no choice...

Dangerous territory with the Toby negotiations however, step away too far and they won't stump up the big cash as we lose a bargaining chip.

Yeah we had been in talks and I think offering £25M or something then United rocked up doubling that amount. For a player who had only played at the top level in France for a full season was crazy.
Yeah, my read of that was Woodward rocked up and they said ‘not for sale’. He probably said there must be a price and they came back with some daft numbers they made up on the spot and he said ‘OK’ forgetting it’s customary to counter offer.

I'm quite pleased with that tbh, seems a right moody sulker to me & we've got a big happy family vibe at our Club.
I'm looking forward to see who we move onto so long as it's not another N'forthe loveof god type. I seem to recall you saying Palace are in the mire financially so maybe we'll be going strong on Wifred Zaha now & I think he'd be blinding here tbh

The negotiations have to be separate for any deals for Martial and Toby. Remember that Spurs and United have very different financial realities. By the sounds of it United are prepared to pay top dollar for Toby, who we simply can't afford to let him run down his contract and thereby lose us millions in his resale value. Whereas we aren't prepared to get near their 70-80M valuation for Martial, and United are less worried financially about the player's contract running down. Balance these two sides of the negotiation and we aren't really in a position to bargain and demand Martial in exchange. If we have decided to cash in on Toby and that United are the only ones to stump up the cash, then we will do the deal albeit a deal that both sides will be happy with

Think it's safe to see we can forget about this one unless Martial now makes a formal transfer request.

As much as its a shame as Martial is a very exciting prospect, i think, unless there is a straightforward way to get him, we should move on. This could go on all summer and end with us holding our dick on deadline day (and not in a popeye way). I reckon next summer we could come back and get him for a reasonable fee, he is still only 22 so we have time.

I am of two minds on this. On the one hand he is among the top talent we have been linked with and if we are looking to make this position a statement signing then we are probably going to have to overspend on someone like this to get instantly startable talent.

On the other hand I really don't want us to waste an entire window chasing a golden egg only to whiff and panic buy a Rondon. So many wums are just begging for this to happen. Would genuinely deflate the window.

I think there's more chance of Bale coming back than this happening.

Utd have no incentive to sell Martial to us. They don't need the money, and the player is under contract, so we have literally zero leverage in this situation.

Thanks Herc. Glad we are deciding to move on, don't want to pass up on any other opportunities so it's best to not waste time if United are not prepared to let go easily.

The only way this happens IMO is if Mourinho puts up a massive stink about needing another attacking option and demands that Martial makes way for it to happen, forcing Woodward's hand to sell. Unfortunately I can't see it as Woodward probably sees Martial as a massive asset, knowing the fans won't be happy if he's sold and will probably gladly sign another attacker and just push Martial to the side for the time being.

I suppose it will come down to whether Jose is still there in a years' time and if Martial has had much more game time.

We should try make Zaha happen now I reckon.

I was wondering last night if - and this is a HUGE if - Bale coming back to us became a possibility what would United do? We know how much Jose wants him and we know how much of a financial pro this would be for them. Would United reach out and say "Let us have a free run at Bale and we'll give you Martial?". I know it's probably a stretch but that's the kind of guy Jose is I think.

And we eventually got Son instead, for around 22 m £. I think Son has been as good for us as Martial has been for United, at least.

If we go down the latter route, its our own fault and deserve to end up scrambing for Rondon. United has been steadfast on not selling to a rival. Why would they do so now? They are not us. They are not willing to sell to a rival like we are. We are idiots to be chasing this.
