Also, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this specific CM spot is the only spot we haven't purchased a player at since Poch has arrived.
Nope.

Mason, bentaleb, Dembele & winks all here already

Dele was signed for a box-to-box role. Poch moved him forward eventually, didn't he?
Even Dele was bought a season and a half before we qualified for the CL. Our squad was much different when we brought in the players who are now mainstays. When Eriksen came in he had to compete against the likes of Sigurdsson to nail down a place. With Dele and Son they were trying to displace the likes of Chadli, Townsend, and Lamela.

We were at a place where we could buy a player for 11m (Eriksen), 5m (Dele), or 22m (Son) and have them slot right in. It's significantly more difficult for us to find players who fit into our transfer budget who can make the same impact now.

as fans we have to be realistic our attacking options have not needed the attention that other areas of the pitch have in the last three years, largely due to the emergence of son kane and alli as top class players. Now with additional revenue it would be nice to add a world class talent a marquee signing to that line up.
This is basically the point I have been trying to make -- that our squad has progressed to where it's hard to make improvements. But this is a thread about a CM, not a forward player, and with Dembele and Sissoko seemingly on their way out that is the obvious place where we can, realistically, bring in an impact signing. So to see us linked with "meh" players like Gomes and Barrios is understandably frustrating to many.

Agreed but I would be seriously disappointed if either of these were our primary targets for the window both seem more like targets of opportunity rather than our top targets? Gomes in particular.

I think the most frustrating thing is that there's seemingly money to spend, but it's being spent on AMs that we're not in desperate need of. Targeting Pulisic for huge money is especially baffling when the midfield is such a weak spot for us.

I feel more AMs should be considered as icing on the cake at the stage.

I'd love to know why Poch thinks we're fine in midfield because it's pretty obvious that the current system and midfield personnel is not right for where we want to go.

What’s even more frustrating is we’re hearing gomes, barrios, and grealish (although don’t hate that one) when it’s rumored that players like Kovacic are available. If they are truly available, that’s the profile we should be in for.

On the whole this is absolutely true, but I think many are frustrated with our failures in the transfer market since we began to qualify for the CL. In that time the only players we've bought who have been unquestioned successes have been Wanyama and Sanchez, though the jury is still out on Lucas (where the early signs are good) and Aurier (where, well... not so much).

We haven't signed a single attacking player or non-defensive midfielder who has come in and made a major impact in years (though again I have hopes for Lucas), and there's a feeling that the squad has stagnated compared to our rivals. We've reached a point where our first XI is of a standard that it is very difficult to improve upon within our financial constraints, which I think is why we have found it so difficult to do successful business in recent windows. The most obvious place within the first team where we should be able to bring in a player who can slot right in is central midfield, so to see us linked with the likes of Barrios and Gomes is just compounding years of frustration for many of us.

Who is to say we aren't in for him - if he is available? ...

I want it all and I want it now ...

Next season will be Eriksen's sixth season with us, and Son's fourth. In modern football that's a very long time for players to essentially go unchallenged. I'm going to go back and edit my earlier post to make it even more clear that I'm talking about the business we've done post-CL qualification.

Anyway, we're getting off topic. The overarching point I was trying to make in that post is that IMO we really ought to be looking for a first-choice quality CM, and Gomes is questionable to say the least for that kind of role in the team.

I have a feeling that Eriksen or Alli will play more games in a deeper role this season

Nobody is to say but it is confirmed by itk here that we’re in for Gomes, barrios and grealish and that’s not incredibly exciting in a summer where spending is supposed to be higher than ever
If we are in/interested for those mentioned players then surely that has something to do with the manager wanting them ... No?

Was thinking about this myself. Wanyama looked class before his injury, likewise winks, dier keep having to drop into defense didnt really help. two from those three remains pretty decent IF they are all on form. if you are going to spend serious cash in the attacking third then a quality signing either first 11 or back up to replace sissoko would seem sensible then strengthening behind them would seem to also be sensible so dier plays in the middle. Especially if you think dele might become more box to box if a marquee attacking player is signed. But that's just my guess work based on the targets that have become public.

If we don't get a midfielder, I really hope so. But there is zero evidence that this is going to happen yet. We all know Poch and his preferences for two man midfields, whether that is 4-2-3-1 or the 5-2-2-1 system

Fair enough.
I’d argue that we had/do have our attacking position in good shape.
Kane, Eriksen, Dele, son, lamela, lucus is not a bad bunch to have and we would have to spend a fourtune to get anyone near their quality and they might not even play that much.

Pochettino drops Eriksen deeper all the time.
We tend to start matches we Eriksen in an advanced position but if we are lacking creativity Eriksen usually drops deeper

So you don't agree with the manager ...

lol alright then.

He wanted Janssen and Llorente..he’s always right? At Soton he signed Pablo Osvaldo for their record fee...he’s a fantastic manager and coach, few better at improving players and getting most out of the team but he hasn’t proven to be an expert eye in the transfer market
