Being neutral and fair on him; he has very good range of passing. Reminded me to a Carrick-type player. He won’t excite you, but he is composed, and always seems to have time. He is not my preferred, but giving an honest balance. We certainly don’t have hiscthpe in our books. I could see him being a key pivot in transition.
I just hope we've got better players in sight for that role and he's a back up if those signings doesn't happen.

Just out of interest who do you think is better than the players we are being linked with? I am serious, besides the chap at Lazio I'm wouldn't know who else might be a step up over the loss of Moussa.

Personally think it's a bit of a minefield when it comes to central mid.

Two Real players, a PSG player and a player stuck between two French teams if I have followed all the chatter on here over the last few weeks.

There is a fair amount of bunce amongst those names but I can see people seeing them as an improvement on losing Moussa I guess.

Have to see which players are on the shortlist then.

Looking at the players we are linked with I think Poch may have an entirely different plan for our midfield than anyone in SC is contemplating. My hunch is that he is going to move both Eriksen and Dele back into a midfield 3 next season playing like City with just one defensive player Dier or Wanyama. He then wants a much more pacey / dynamic forward line with Kane flanked by pace in the form of Son, Moura and Martial/Zaha. We keep looking for new recruits in CM but what if Poch thinks we already have the midfielders he wants at the club and he wants more pace upfront, effectively shifting us more to a City / Pool style of play ? This would certainly explain our reported transfer targets. Grealish and Winks would be the Eriksen / Ali back ups and we would have sufficient depth and permutations for rotation with Kane, Son, Moura and Martial upfront. In fact if we moved to this different type of style / formation arguably you could accommodate both Martial and Zaha giving the scope for lots of rotation.

I’d love this to be the plan.

I think it would also tie in with Poch’s comments about being brave, he could be alluding to not just our purchases but a reshaping of the squad to play a different way. I certainly think it is the way forward. We could shift between City’s 4-3-3 and a 3-5-2 that has also worked well for us. Much as I love Dembele he almost forces you into a 4-2-3-1.

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I'm fairly excited by this. I'd obviously prefer someone like Savic or Kovacic, who are proven at a high level in recent seasons, but for me, the biggest hole in our squad is a player like Gomes was at Valencia. And I'm backing Poch to make him that player again.

With the current personnel, ie that which you state, a 433 would not be an ideal formation. Distribution from the MF would still be a problem as neither Wanyama nor Dele would improve on this seasons efforts and Eriksen's positioning would be more rigid. If Poch is thinking this then it makes it even more absurd that we are not focusing more intently on MFs instead of Martial, Zaha, etc.

It's better than a 4-2-3-1 double pivot though. I agree you need a more technical number 6 but at least it's a position that suits Dier better than in a CM2. I'd still prefer that he was the Toby replacement though.

I wonder if Gomes could fill that role for us behind Alli and Eriksen say. I think for that role though Rabiot and Kondogbia would be better choices just to sit in there and dictate from deep. Diawara would be my first choice though, he's a brilliant CM. Great at everything. I think he'll go to the very top when he starts playing every week.

Kongdogbia would have been a good shout but he just signed perm with Valencia. I see Rabiot as a pure 8 but I guess he could be a nice 6 against the bus parkers.

You rate Dier as a MF but I don't. I am not sure his instincts have improved 1 bit since his first season. And on that note neither has his passing for me. If he is in the MF we will be seeing more stultifying stuff this season as he just takes too long to make decisions and never seems comfortable with the hot potato.

I don't hate the Gomes link as at least he is a proper MF. He's not a world beater but he was at least address some deficiencies and send the message that the decision makers are seeing the problems taht are clear.

Nah I don't rate Dier there at all, he's a much better CB. But if he has to play midfield then he'd be better as an anchor than as a traditional central midfielder.

Yup. It all started to go downhill when he started to try and play. Someone has to tell him. It's been two season now this experiment should end.
