I should add, I think Hazard has had a fine tournament - so I don't want to be bashing him. Plus, I think it was good enough to push him to Real Madrid - which helps Spurs...

I can't believe the love Maguire gets
For me he’s been a massive surprise as I never rated him before the WC.

He’s been solid at the back making quite a few a few crucial tackles but the two main things that have made him stand in my mind (and would fit into our team) have been:
  1. Composure on the ball; both carrying it out of defence and calmly giving himself a yard when under pressure
  2. Threat on set pieces, Trippier has delivered some great balls but Maguire has been the main target most times creating knock downs and bagging a goal with a great finish.

Pickford
Trippier Varane Umtiti Laxalt
Kante Pogba
De Bruyne Hazard Cheryshev
Cavani
I tried to be a bit different, instead of necessarily going for the ones who have made the headlines I have picked players who I saw put in impressive performances game after game - even if their teams didn't necessarily go that far.

- I think Pickford just shades it in goal. Made some good stops and had that penalty shootout heroics.

- Trippier at RB, not a huge amount of competition.
- I just went with the France centre backs. I think they've been a solid unit for most of the tournament, made blocks/clearances when needed and also popped up in the oppositions penalty area and impacted at set pieces.
- Left back was a tricky one, but in the whole tournament I was most impressed with Laxalt and his energy and tenacity.

- I went with the French unit again in the centre of the park. Pogba has had a very good tournament in my opinion. Kante had a poor final but in the other games has just covered every blade of grass and broke up play well. Modric was in contention, but I felt he had a few ropey performances earlier on in the tournament when Croatia were playing an unbalanced 4-2-4.

- Attackers were a tough pick. Thought Mbappe has been a bit hit and miss so he missed out. Coutinho was close to selection, as was Lukaku as a centre forward. I picked Cheryshev for his impact in all his games and he scored some superb goals on top of that, the Belgian duo have been the best creators in my opinion and always looked dangerous, and through the centre I thought Cavani was excellent earlier in the tournament and his injury really fucked Uruguay.

Think him, Pickford and Tripps excelled. Really noticeable yesterday though that in that system he needs someone with pace alongside him.
Dare i say it but almost a bit beckenbaueresk the way he come out with the ball.

So the Golden Boot winner doesn’t make anyone’s team ?
No. I’ve had loads of debates the last week and everyone who I’ve spoken to has said three pens and a ghost backheel really don’t make him a worthy golden boot winner.

In addition to the above:
  • Kompany has been excellent, as have Hazard and Meunier
  • Modric, Perisic, Vrsaljko and Vida
  • Cheryshev
  • Cavani
  • Trippier, Pickford, Stones
  • Mitrovic...
...are the ones that come to mind.

But the fact is - he is, in a team that hardly created chances. Did a lot more work for the team than Lukaku or Cavani - seriously, the man gets hardly any credit!!

Luka Modric player of the tournament for me.

I'm going to boycott France's players in protest at the shit football Deschamps has such a talented group playing.

So my - non-french - team of the tournament is:

Hyun-Woo

Trippier------------Mina--------Godin----------Marcelo

Modric------------Brozovic----------Cheryshev

Hazard-------Cavani--------Perisic
