I won’t lie, JJ’s tweet (taken on face value), is a bit unsettling. I really thought that we would use this window to back Pochettino with funds not explicitly reliant on outgoing sales. Unless, JJ is referencing a set of players we are pursuing with a combined price that exceeds what we are willing to spend in terms of net. But, in the plain light of day, his words pour a smidge of cold water on expectations about being ‘brave’ and ‘backing the coach’. I hope the reality is closer to something in between.

We were always going to have to sell players to raise funds for some purchases. Its always been this way, no idea why anyone would think its any different this window. Both Poch and Levy have said in the past they don't foresee spending £60 million on a player (for example), yet people completely disregard both men's statements.

Besides, we have a lot of players that can be moved on before we can add to the squad. Breezer said yesterday that VJ is on his way out (possibly this week) so theres one for you all already.

Who was it that first said anything about being brave?

I'll bite (probably at risk to my ring). I believe it was a quote attributed directly to Poch. Noose, neck, hoisted and all that....

Edit - But some insist on wanting to read it in a certain negative way.

It's not like stuff isn't being done now in preparation though is it. The way everyone is panicing its like we are going to sell and then decide who we want. Again the lists of potential incomings have been there for a long time and we are more than aware of where things currently stand with them.

It's not about panic though, I feel that our late trading impacts negatively on our early season form. Therefore it appears that the board puts profit before football.

Might be more of a case that it's all seemingly being done last minute again, which may seem surprising with all the brave talk
3 weeks from today window shuts

Believe what you like, the only way a window can be judged is after it has closed. If people want to spend the next three weeks mentally debating which doorway they want to swing from then so be it, but there really is no need to as I have posted since way before the window opened.

I'd argue our worst spells of the last two seasons were around October/November rather than the start of the season. Last year we had the Wembley hoodoo but were still right in the mix going into the 10th game at Old Trafford. I think it's a bit of a myth.

Any poor start this season is likely to be the fact that 9 of our key players went all the way to the end of the World Cup.

This year it was always going to be a disjointed preseason and at least the window closes early.

It’s always disappointing to be told that we won’t get new players until others are moved on, but it’s perfectly logical.

So we sign a top centre back, what if Toby doesn’t go? We end up with too many players fighting for one squad place, one of them won’t be happy sitting on their arse. That could cause all sorts of issues in the mentality of the squad. That’s before you consider wages and squad limits.

We are still one of the best teams in the league.

Think it was always gonna be a difficult window due to the World Cup. But can’t blame some fans being pissed off that it’s getting done late again, when all the noises from the club were about getting things done earlier. Personally think the window closing before the season starts will help us anyway so not to worried. As long as they’re the right signing I’ll be happy.

Very difficult to blame Levy for a poor run in November though isn't it.

Agree a successful window can only be judged at the end, but even if we have a great window, we will still be 3/4 weeks behind our rivals who have done most of their business already.

I suppose this couldn’t have been helped seeing as 2 of our (expected) sales have been in Russia for a month, but I don’t see why this has delayed the release of Janssen for example...which could have resulted in Grealish being done and dusted by now. I expect renewed contracts to be announced as and when our World cup stars return to training.

When our No1 targets fail to complete, (not all) as they invariably do, then it leaves little time to move down the list to the squad fillers. Leaving any selling club little time to replace.

I’m not even sure a window can be judged until a year later. I remember Windows I thought we’re terrible that actually did a lot for the team and some I thought were great yet blew up in our faces.

Same goes for every team really.

We just need to trust the Club (and the ITK's) and remember how decent our squad actually is, it's not easy to improve it.

We obviously have players we need to move on for squad space and there's also clearly deals being worked on.

That's not to say I don't understand the frustration though, in my opinion this window was the most important one in terms of getting deals done as quickly as possibly due to the window closing earlier and the fact we're going to have players at vastly different stages of pre-season fitness on day one due to the World Cup.

We should all be used it to by now anyway!

We don't know what's already going on behind the scences ... so chill - it's not like Levy started from scratch after the WC.
As Trix said, we know where we stand with all our targets and probably also with some outgoings.

Now it's Levys turn to get everything over the line in the next 3 weeks.

I can see why the club operate the way that has been mentioned. If we were to go and buy another CB for big money, it may lead to other clubs low balling us for players they may now assume we want to shift, i.e. Toby - based on squad size, playing time and recouping money we've spent.

You've literally said it all summer, I'm disappointed but not sure why people are shocked by it.

Because others looked at Pochs quotes at he end of the season and he fact that he signed a new deal so soon after combined with other more bullish ITK predictions of big money to spend and actually having a net spend and thought actually for once we may be “brave”

Ultimately 3 weeks to go so let’s see what happens but yet again we find ourselves racing against the clock whilst our competitors close multiple equally hard to conclude deals

The Bullish ITK was talking about spending 150 mill which is entirely possible still and also being Brave has been interpreted in any which way. I mean I could add a new interpretation which is being brave means not signing B players because we can get them early and risking leaving it late so we can sign top class players. I just made that up and it could easily be as correct as any other idea.

I agree with your perception of the quotes from Poch and the ITK early in the window - but there's a difference between looking to spend money on a) the top players you want and b) getting good value on those deals and things quickly moving beyond our means.

I still take the 'brave' quotes as being slightly more long term though - yes Poch wants to improve this year but perhaps Levy has offered assurances around the increased revenue we're to expect from the stadium/NFL/sponsorship over the longer term (even though there's the whole stadium to be paid for).

You're right though, let's see where we are in 3 week's time. Hopefully some good business is still there to be done.
