They must think it but can't announce it officially as then they are committed to a date and leave themselves open for criticism.

This is a way of getting the information out to the fans without making an official commitment. At least, that's my take on it. It wasn't an unplanned comment by Poch in my opinion.

I agree, they wouldn't put info out there like this if they aren't serious at a risk of another PR disaster and pissing off even more fans.

I honestly think they should stop making promises. That's what annoys fans when they don't meet them. People accept building some thing as massive as that takes time. Just get it right.

Only if Poch is a good boy will Santa keep his promise.

Stop spinning the spin... we'll be lucky if we get a half dozen games there at all this season.

Poch being "confident" isn't the same as making promises. As the club's most senior regular spokesman, obviously he will be questioned about the new stadium every press conference, and he's just trying to be positive. Don't think we need to read more into it than that

He should just say "it will be ready when it's ready". Don't mention any time frames.

Levy hiding from the media again, Poch having to face this every PC is a joke
There's a reason for this, I think.
What would most fans want Levy to say about the situation?
They'd want him to say sorry first of all. And that is the last thing he can say.

The delay will have cost 10s of millions, and I dare say the negotiations about how that is divided up between Tottenham, Mace, subcontractors and insurers will go on for years.
Any apology Levy makes could be used against him - he was acknowledging his guilt and his principle role in the delay, they might say.

He could apologise on behalf of Mace, but then they'd only counter that they have nothing to be sorry about.

MP is the perfect person to apologise to the fans, as he clearly has no responsibility for any of the delays. He sort of did that a few weeks back.
Even in proposing a potential opening before xmas, he makes it quite clear that this is not a formal statement from the club. He will be killed for saying it.

Facing the media and being a spokesperson for the club is a requirement for literally every professional football manager and this has been the case for a long time at Spurs.

Just reading this thread and finding myself a little confused by something, what does Levy have to be sorry for?

These things happen, it's a major project - he didn't personally do the wiring or what ever is at fault.

But it stops a lot of the stupid rumours that are annoying many fans, along the lines of it being march or next season. At least the papers will now focus on this year which is probably a reasonable timeframe.

That's too scary. I'd prefer Southampton.

Absolutely! Wouldn't want those scumbags to potentially have the bragging rights of being the first side to beat us at the new stadium! Rather have a more realistic chance of winning the first game there. These stats are always brought up over and over. I can almost hear it now, maybe again and again in years to come, "And of course, Chelsea who famously thrashed and humiliated Spurs in the very first game here at the new Durex stadium, face them again today in an unbeaten run between these two sides that stretches back..."

yep it has been for a long time at Spurs...

Yeah I'm fed up with Sarri going on about their new stadium issues, and Marco Silva as well. And Roy Hodgson about the new stand at Palace. Feel sorry for all of them.

I agree with the first part and tbh I was looking for a bite from the usual suspects. But I genuinely don't agree with Poch taking it upon himself to field these questions- or being asked to by Levy. He should simply say "the Chairman will announce more when he can, we'll do our best in the meantime, no excuses". And no more.

Yeah those examples are definitely comparable, I mean those other teams' stadiums which were due to be built this year have suffered the same setbacks as ours have.
