Overcrowding and the fencing at the front were the main issues in those days, there was no proper crowd control and the numbers in the stands were always a lot more than the official number. That can’t happen now with the modern ticketing systems and the removal of cash at the gate-the vast majority of the problems that did occur then were more due to those things than the standing itself.

I just wasn’t there but I believe from a lot of our older fans that it was a near miracle it (hillsborough) didn’t happen at one of our games (think it was a match at wolves but could be wrong)

yep 81 semi's over crowded, can't remember if the fencing was in place then, which mean quite a few went over the hoardings (if fencing gate was opened) I was there, not at the front though

It's long before my time too but it was a game against Wolves also at Hillsborough. Would've been a disaster were it not for the fence collapsing. So they built a stronger fence. That's what's dangerous, total disregard for fans and their welfare, not people standing up.

It all just requires a bit of common sense. Anyone in the south lower who insists on sitting down needs to have a word with themselves. Likewise anyone standing in the west upper in reverse.

Winner-this is it exactly for me

Pretty sure that is the one and it is sadly amazing (hillsborough) it didn’t happen sooner with the fences-just look at the numbers in the stands-beyond comprehension now really

That for me is the big difference, the fencing was an absolutely disgusting idea, unfortunately probably as a knee jerk reaction to the hooligan problems of that time.

Now it doesn’t need to be the same issue and it should be perfectly safe, with the rail system or similar, to have safe standing (I highly doubt levy would have pre empted it in the new stadium if he didn’t think a change in law was coming) and that it what is clearly needed by the way this thread has gone so off topic-an area for those that want to stand and one for those that want to sit. That should be relatively easy in this day and age

Yeah, but I think the problem seems to be persistent standing is not just confined to South Stand supporters. It’s going on in pockets all over the stadium.

I didn’t get a ticket in the South because I don’t want to stand the whole game ( I’ve done and enjoyed the terraces when I was younger, but it’s not for me anymore - and even if it was my Dad couldn’t hack it). Even though it’s not really allowed there is an implied knowledge that that’s where it will be tolerated.

That’s where it should end imo. There is a whole 17,500 stand for this. At least 3-5k of which is ready for safe standing. It seems that’s not quite enough for some who demand the right to do it in other parts of the stadium. Sorry, but if you want to stand go in the Park Lane. Otherwise, sit down.
Absolute bang on post(y)
Couldn’t have put it better

when your granted a safety certificate it's on the understanding of the seats being sat on. I'm talking about the steep stands where the minute matey in the front row stands, the 60 rows behind need to stand to watch the game. if matey at the top falls and pushes the person in front accidentally a good chance he will push the 1 in front (dominos)
How many times has that happened?
Pretty much Everyone stands in away ends round the country, south lower of old white hart lane stood.
Hyperbole?

Whenever we go away to some grounds then surely most/all fans stand for the whole match, other than half time :ROFLMAO:. It is not considered dangerous then. It’s just in the appropriate place.

I think this is going to become a real problem for the club especially in Europe. I would imagine the EUFA report will mention the virtually total standing in North and South stands for the whole match. People seem to think that the new stadium means that they can revert back to what they did in the 70's and 80's ( I was there) but, until they allow some form of safe standing, it is simply against the rules and they will eventally reduce the capacity for European nights as a punsishment.
I know its a very touchy subject for some people but its worse now that its much harder for non season ticket holders to pick where they want to ' sit' if they are lucky enough to win the ticket lottery.
I know probably not a popular view ,but the club are bound to get tougher about this as it is going to cause them serious issues eventually.
Why would it? You dont see the likes of Dortmund and most eastern European clubs being punished for this so why would we? If you have standing issues you might want to find seats in other areas.

@mickdale so you obviously disagree even if your ratings show as being more angry with my post.

you tell me where children, old aged pensioners and disabled supporters should sit then
I certainly wouldn't buy tickets in the south if I was taking my kids why would anyone else?

Does anyone know if you sell a ticket on the exchange, can you re-buy for the same game with the same membership should you later be able to make it?
I thought only ST holders could sell on the exchange?
If you are then yes you can buy other tickets after exchanging them as the club would be making money.

Some people buy houses next to churches then complain about bells ringing....
Worse, some people buy flats in a new development built next to a long-established music venue and then campaign to have the venue closed down because the noise disturbs them.

I know, I know ... OT.

Mate, I’m in the same boat.
The only pics I’ve taken are photographs of a TV from a BT broadcast. I’m just hoping someone has a capture card with the ability to rip these type of stills in HD.

I’m not talking overall at all about south lower being a concern, but if the authorities see what was going on in the south upper especially with it’s steepness the trouble could be heading the clubs way. There would only need to be one serious incident and it won’t just be the club in the shit
