Stumbled across this with 20 minutes to go. Saw six goals, huge opportunities to score on at least ten more occasions, just totally absurd spectacle. I've never seen such a mismatch even in kids football.

The problem with these kind of tonkings, is that they skew the qualification table for the best 4 who finish in 3rd in their table. The thais have -13 GD. Even with a win v chile say that might leave them on 3pts but with -12GD no chance of progression. Which would be more a function of the group they ended in by chance.

England could draw Thailand ... though more likely to be New Zealand. Winner of D vs 3rd B/E/F then maybe Brazil then a semi against probably (USA or sweden) vs france depending on who throws their game to avoid drawing france.
Cynical.:D

I see the US team are getting criticised in some US media for the way they celebrated all of their goals. Saying they showed poor sportsmanship. Tbh I did think a few of their celebrations were ott. Especially when it got past 6-0 and they were still going wild as the goals poured in.

Anyway there should be some good games today looking forward to them.

People actually giving the US ladies a hard time for winning by that much. Come on.. Much rather watch a match where the team keeps on pushing than slowing it down just because someone's feelings will be shattered

Pride comes before a fall. I cant wait for the team that stuffs the USA.
The problem is not that the USA are good. There is no doubt they are. The problem is most of the other teams are behind the curve on fitness, technique, development, and leagues. I've no doubt that eventually the european teams will catch up. After all the mens game is a bear-pit when it comes to competitiveness at the national level, where the USA barely get a look in.
Eventually the USA will be a footnote like the mens team due to their league structures. Might take a loooooong time though.

I would say that the USA will consistently be one of the top teams in the world for decades to come. The women's game doesn't have as many of the hurdles in the US that the men's game does.

In 1972 the US passed Title IX of the Education Amendment Act. This act eff

Yup...fat fingered the submit button....:banghead:

But....

Long story VERY, VERY short......By law (Title IX) schools and universities are required to fund womens sports (really education) in schools at similar levels to men. Since women don't have American Football which is popular, has large teams and is expensive US schools need to offset the spending on the American Football teams in school systems by providing similar funding to women't sports. Football (Soccer) and Basketball quickly became the two favorite sports amongst girls in the US and schools started pouring cash into them this spreads down up and down the education ladder and since women like playing sports as much as men and because no one likes to play anything and lose....coaching improved, youth systems were built to ensure that by the time girls reached a point where they were going to play in school that they knew what the hell they were doing.

So now the USA has a massive infrastructure for women to play, coach, get coached football (soccer) at an increasingly high level and has for roughly closing in on 40 years.

Then you add into the equation the sheer number of people in the US and it means that you have a massive pool of girls and women who are playing the sport and the national team (which is very well funded) is able to draw more and more of the elite level athletes into the sport and equip them with the training they need. The men's game is hampered by the fact (i would also say that the US men's coaching has been a joke for decades) that the elite athletes simply haven't been choosing to play football (soccer) instead opting for basketball, American Football and baseball. The women's sports don't have this challenge, for top female athletes football (soccer) and basketball are the sports they choose.

The US may not win this WWC but you could see that they have the athletes/skill on the team to be a favorite but more importantly to their success they have an infrastructure in place that will just keep producing more and more athletes so that they can fill in the slots as players "age out" of the sport.

Interesting point about last night. Is it 'correct' to beat someone as soundly as USA did ? One could argue it isn't "sporting" but I have always looked at it from the other point of view. If I am in competition with someone then I am there to beat them by as big a margin as I can because I assume they are out to do the same. The modest statement of "I took it easy for the last twenty minutes" seems so patronising and only makes the loser feel worse.

As a teenager - into my early fourties I used to play crown green bowls (yeah I know...old man's game...but it isn't I assure you) and eventually had the honour of representing Wales. I remember only too well playing the senior team members as a youngster and getting hammered 21-5 or even less, going home and breaking my heart but determined to do better. My old man used to say "Smile, shake hands, walk away then come home and cry".

As my game improved I would score maybe 12 or even 15.....I'd walk off the green proud of myself only to hear my opponent say "I let him have a couple, don't want to put him off playing". It was so undermining to my confidence initially but eventually I realised I'd earned every single point and they were trying to defend the score and their reputation. Then one day I began winning....such a feeling :). I vowed then to beat my opponent 21-0 if I could, no mercy....not cruel... just fiercely competitive. We don't watch sports to see teams deliberately let their opponents off the hook....well at least I don't.

So well played USA, well done in setting a new World Cup record and commiserations to Thailand who were gracious in defeat. It could have stayed at 3-0 for the second half but instead we enjoyed a goal fest. (y)(y)

Sounds like the issue people had wasn't as much with the 13-0 scoreline.

People thought it was classless that the US women were doing full celebrations for each goal with the game in hand.

I don't have any real issue with the scoreline....i have played sports my entire life and been on both sides of a beating, it happens, it is what it is.

But i can see how the celebrations would rub people the wrong way. Didn't really bother me but i can see how some people would not like it.
