This is a very plausible scenario

Give Martin Jol until the end of this season. 4th is now out of the question but if we manage another 5th place finish AND win a cup (any cup) Jol should be entitled to anoter season to break into the top 4. If by the end of the season we do not finish 5th AND do not win a cup or at the very very least get to a final Jol should move to Ajax and we should apoint Jose Mourinho who will be eligable under the terms of his chelsae pay out to join us for th 07/08 season. Of course we need a back up plan if Mourinho thinks we are not big enough for him. Number 2 target should be Ramos and number 3 target should be Klinsmann

Good plan?

2)I think Klinsmann would be a good choice to take us forward. Given the attacking mindset and his stature with the club, I think he would be my pick.

I don't want Klinsmann as manager because if he isn't very good then the fans will start booing and jeering. I'm too young to remember the likes of Hoddle, Gazza etc., so Klinsmann is my favourite Spurs player of all time and I don't want to see the fans turn against him.

Also what experience does he have? Managing a club team is totally different to managing a national team. Klinsmann might not be any good at the day to day runnings of a club.

Why?

I don't see Mourinho coming unless Levy guarantees him far more say over which players we sign than Jol appears to have had. Will Comolli like that? And if Ramos fails to turn Sevilla's current slide around, is he going to be such an attractive proposition?

It wouldn't surprise me at all if we went for Puel. He's a big mate of Comolli's and been pretty successful at Lille. There have also been rumours about him, apparently. How well Lille-style football would go down is a moot point, though.

Exsqueeze me? How much more of a say do you want above and beyond having the power to veto any and every transfer. If Jol isn't up to the job of managing the team and thoroughly scouring Europe for potential targets, i don't see the problem. And if he is, there is also more than a suggestion that he does put forward transfer targets. There seems to be a prevailing need to deflect a lot of blame away from MJ and/or onto to the people upstairs by any means necessary. Even as far as suggesting that he's having players he doesn't want forced into his squad. It beggars belief. Sorry, i thought he was Big Martin Jol, not Caspar Milquetoast.

Yes, i'm sure a lot of top class managers would like to have more control in the transfer department. But that's indicative of the continental-style setup. Not specific to our situation and poor, victimised Jol.

Sorry but I don't see which amazing signings Comolli has made . I do not see Zokora , Rocha , Ghaly and Ekotto as testimonies to his scouting abilities. The jury is out on Kaboul and Boateng. Signing British players like Bale and Jenas is fine but I would have expected Comolli to bring us much more in terms of foreign players and really I can only think of Berbatov as an outstanding signing like that.
I would love to see Klinsmann as DOF with Jol working for him as coach.

...and it was Jol that targeted Berbatov in any case...

The Berbatov negotiations started well before a bid or an "activation" occured. It included the courting and sweet talking of the player a long time before the bid went in. That, in Berbatov's own words, was the reason we were the suitors to his services.

This thread belongs in subsection 2, of the Martin Jol black hole entry. In the end it's all about kicking Martin out and replacing him with someone not as good.

Gonna look stupid when we win the EUFA cup and MJ is manager of the year.

Big fat no thanks to Jurgen from me. If we lose Jol and that's also a big if, I want someone with experience of manging a club.

wouldn't that have meant we were tapping him up?

Mullethead was going to be an improvement on Ossie, and was, for a season; Gross was going to bring us the same modern approach to training, diet etc. that Wenger had brought to the Arse, but was given the bum's rush after 26 games; Graham was going to instil discipline, beef up the defence and return us to winning ways, and failed; Glenn was going to restore true Spurs values, and he failed too; fuck knows what Fruitini was supposed to do. Of all that lot, only Gross has continued as a successful manager; given their limitations, Basel play neat, attractive football and have a very decent record in Europe. Maybe Sugar should have stuck with Gross a little longer.

And maybe we and the board should take a lesson from all this, because there is no guarantee whatsoever that anyone, even Mourinho (and certainly not Klinsmann) is going to be be an improvement on Jol, or 'take us to the next level'.

Jol has said so before...

So you don't have evidence. I don't think he has said so before.

You could have at least used the old favourite of Bundesliga buys being Jol's and Ligue 1 buys being Comolli's. Yeah, i seem to remember quite a few people jumped on that bandwagon.

Berbatov is generally accepted to be, if anything, a "Comolli buy" (although, obviously, it's a joint final decision) along with the rest of the good and bad purchases. Not that Berbatov's discovery was any feat, he was already well known and being courted by top teams around Europe. The real feat was getting him to sign. As PT said, our courtship of Berby was a process that was drawn out over a long time. Who was flying over to watch a Leverkusen game here and there, keeping him sweet while Jol was managing the team during the season? And after Leverkusen refused to sell him during the January transfer window, who kept him sweet while Jol was leading our charge in the Premiership and Man U were trying to sneak in under our noses? Berbatov appreciated the fact that we were 'determined' to get him, and we eventually got him. You see, even though Comolli's tried to sabotage us and get us relegated with villainous purchases like Zokora, he's not all bad.
