Was I Illegal, or Simply Immoral?

I have a question regarding the rules of Association Football.

On the weekend, I played for my new football team, The Expatriate Lions, in a friendly against British Malaysia FC. The game was called off after 1/3rd time (we play 3 x 30mins) due to a monsoon. We led 1-0.

The goal has gone down (incorrectly) under my name. But this isn't the problem. The problem is that in explaining how the goal was scored I was accused by 3 of my team-mates of breaking the laws of the game. Something that I am disappointed with.

Here's the low-down:

Corner comes in from the left. Cleared back to the taker. He swings in a ball to the near-post with his right boot. I make my run from the outside of the box towards the near post and I think I'm going to reach the target area.

I don't want to get clattered by a member of my own team so I yell 'Mine!' as I near the ball.

The defender at the near-post ducks upon hearing this call, and the ball dips over his head to the feet of the keeper. I'm fractionally too slow to get there, but the ball hits the inside of the keepers ankle and rolls into the net.

I wheel away in triumph and the defence turn on the keeper asking why he called and then didn't collect the ball.

I laughingly recounted this tale to my team-mates after the game. They insisted that under the rules the ref should give a free-kick when a player shouts 'mine' rather than give their actual name.

Is this right?

I was taught since a lad that if someone shouted 'mine' they hadn't claimed it anyway, so if in doubt boot it out. As a centre-half I've always stuck to that philosophy, too. To find that I may have broken the rules taints what was otherwise a fine performance and enjoyable day.

Answers on a postcard to the usual address, yeah?

I’m confused now. Was it a female linesman who offered you the ‘extra services’ this time? :?

I was always taught not to shout "mine" because it could result in a free-kick given against us when I played for the school. Not so important for strikers but for defenders which I was, it was vital.

I believe it is acceptable to shout "Oddie's" or "Oddie's ball" but not "Mine!" because you're identifying yourself to your team-mates and not gaining an advantage over the opposition, in the way that you often hear a keeper shouting "Keeper's" or "Keeper's ball".

I've always felt it was stupid because you play to the whistle and like you said, if in doubt as a defender, you take charge and clear your lines, but that's what I was taught all those years ago anyway.

The worst kind of cheating. At least a red card offence.

If I was in charge you'd be given a 10 game suspension aswell.

I'm appalled.

Calling out " mine ! " is lower than a snakes belly.

Just like calling out " leave it ! "

Have you ever thought about playing for Arsenal BO ?
You would fit in well.

Surely putting the other team is off is allowed.

"Square if you need" always works well.

The always tasty, "your mum" yelled whilst opposition are taking a shot is always fun. As are random animal noises.

The last match I ever played for school, coincidentally my first, was for the U14C team. We won. I was a collossus at the back. In more ways than one.

The last time I shouted 'Mine!' no-one paid any attention and the ship went down.

I've seen a free kick given in five-a-side for shouting "leave it" at the opposition. That was a bit more of a clear cut case of cheating though.

I don't think their are any rules that state you can't shout 'mine'. It depends on who the ref is really - some see it as unsporting, others don't.

When I was younger and goalkeeping with the gooners (sorry) the coaches there told me to always shout 'mine' or 'keepers' on crosses if I were going for it and told opposing players in practice matches to do the same to put us off...though you can't read much into that because we all know that they tend to be low-life, cheating (can't insert word I want to due to the risk of being banned).

On reflection I think I will pigeonhole you into
the "amoral" category

Always see freekicks given in Sunday League football for calls of Mine or Leave it or I've got it! And we used to have the same rules in training and kids leagues so I have a feeling it could be a law, possibly an unwritten rule?

Gentlemen, as ever, you have been bastions of ethical advice and moral guardianship.

I will henceforth always be sure to shout "Bill Oddie's" whenever going for the ball.

That should certainly limit any confusion.

Go with ‘Matt Bellotti’, might make more sense

I've just looked through the laws of the game and it's not in there from a quick read through!
