I thought that but it's the player being behind the ball not the ball going backwardsI didn’t think you couldnt be offside if the ball was passed backwards?

I still don’t get how you can be offside from a corner. Surely defences should just move completely away from area. A quick look on fifa rules and it says you can’t e offside from a corner. I must be missing something
I don't think it even needs to be that complicated. In the case of offsides they should just stick to the 'clear and obvious' concept. As soon as the goal is scored the video ref should have like 20-30 seconds to confirm the goal. If there's an error that isn't obvious enough to disallow/allow the goal in that time then they should just go in favour of the on pitch decision.I like the idea of VAR for fouls and suchlike, and for clear offsides.
But using it for these millimetre offsides is utterly ridiculous:
(1) The technology simply isn't accurate enough to measure offsides to that level of precision. you cannot judge exactly when the ball is kicked, and the camera speed means there can be movement between frames of more than the offside distances we are seeing.
(2) Aside from the technical issues, there's another point I haven't seen discussed much. Which it that it spoils the skill of playing off the last defender or timing a run. It is literally impossible for a player to judge with millimetre accuracy during a game whether or not they are onside. They look across the line, or time their run, and make their best guess. Yet they are being judged against a standard they themselves cannot apply in the game.
Edit:
I appreciate that there's no easy answer - because you have to draw a line somewhere, so there's always an argument about where you draw it from.
But I would introduce a margin of error of a foot, and introduce electronic chips in a wristband. That way you can reliably measure the distance between any two players' wristbands. And if it's a foot or less, then you're onside.
Yeah that might work too. But you'd still get arguing over interpretation of the image.I don't think it even needs to be that complicated. The result may not be scientific but that isn't what football's about. No-one ever complained about these minuscule offside mistakes prior to VAR - it was the occasional glaring fuck ups that cost teams big that everyone hated. VAR has been brilliant at correcting those, it's just these niggly, 2mm ones that are barely noticeable even with the technology that get peoples backs up and slow the game down.
Well if the time period is short enough then the video ref won't have time to get all forensic over it, and it's that forensic shit that annoys the piss out of everyone.Yeah that might work too. But you'd still get arguing over interpretation of the image.
Sounds very sensible. You should write them a letter or something.Well if the time period is short enough then the video ref won't have time to get all forensic over it, and it's that forensic shit that annoys the piss out of everyone.
Lineker said he'd been speaking to the boffins at VR HQ about how they could improve it and suggested something similar. I sincerely hope common sense prevails because at the moment they're killing the sport in the pursuit of an unattainable perfection.Sounds very sensible. You should write them a letter or something.
Agreed, the forensic analysis doesn't even work because their data simply isn't precise enough to do it. And even if it was, players can't be that precise intentionally in a game.Lineker said he'd been speaking to the boffins at VR HQ about how they could improve it and suggested something similar. The ball is played from the byeline in a corner. For any player to be ahead of the ball they’d need to be on the goal line and the corner taken from the back of the quadrant.I thought that but it's the player being behind the ball not the ball going backwards
Obstruction is an indirect free kick, unless they’ve changed the ruling. How is that not a pen for Maddison? Wolves player clearly steps in and obstructs his run and nowhere near the ball.
