If Levy gives Dier a new contract I think I will lose all faith in the club, we would have been far better off keeping Carter-vickers than Dier, only bright side is that an upgrade will be easy, most any centre half will be better.

Yes, he did. He didn't get tight enough and he generally never does. With pace he struggles so much, I remember Nunez tearing him apart as well.

He is too scared to go in for a tackle when he is on the half turn or running backwards he does nothing but shadow the attacker.

I would take Romero, Sanchez and even Lenglet in a situation like that over dier. Lenglet and Sanchez may make the odd mistake and fall over, but at least it's doing something.

José had this problem, he put Dier at CB but realised we had to sit deep. If you leave space behind with Dier at the back you are in trouble.

It's not obvious as he always does the same thing, which is back off and never commits himself. Never technically a mistake but always at fault through passive behavior.

He is not a bad defender, but it is a big weakness for teams who want to play a high line.
I remember in Poch's first season he played there and it happened a lot.

That's why I think Poch moved him to DM

You’re not getting it. Technically he did nothing wrong. It was just physical limitations - not being quick - that let him down.

Rashford is roasting 99% of defenders left 1 on 1 with him.
Haha, did you ever play football?

Dier gets into the right position initially, then makes one errant stride which led to his flaming. If he steps towards the angle of Rashford's run, he forces an earlier shot or a chop inside. You should read what Jenus said about this. See the little boo! jump at the end?!

What about yesterday where he's been pulled out of the back line, ball watching, as the whole world spots Gakpo run off him?
2-0- with a bit of help from I'm not playing with this ****, Romero.

Second goal, he vacates his position to push 10 yards up and follow Gakpo despite there being 4 other players who can deal with him. Gakpo exploits the space in behind to cutback for Diaz.

Even for the 3rd goal (penalty), Romero is poor and makes a rash challenge but he’s put in that position by Dier inexplicably vacating his position again to push up and completely miss the ball, leaving a massive hole in our defence.

He has to go, he’s beyond saving and we need fresh energy and quality at the back.

If the new manager plays a back 4 I’m genuinely not sure any of our players would fit the system barring Emerson and Spence . You could argue Ben Davies but if he’s a starter next season then I’d give up.

Can’t play in a two, seems to have forgotten how to play in a three.
Honestly the 2nd and 3rd goals he’s actually below Sunday league level on them. Completely vacates his position to push up when there’s no need and in doing so completely breaks the defensive line and leaves a gaping hole.

This has to be one of the most stupid post I’ve ever seen, why don’t you just say that the reason Kulu didn’t score the chance he had was because Dier was standing 2 yards to the left of where he should have been!

Beyond a parody watching this bloke play. He hasn't got a clue and absolutely laughable we are trying to build a defence around him.

If we qualify for the Europa Conference, would be happy for us to face a team from Albania or something as long as we can release Dier in a field somewhere there in the away leg.

Haha. If you actually analyse the goals again and watch them you’ll see exactly what I mean. He clearly vacates his position for both the 2nd and 3rd goals and as the CCB completely exposes the entire backline.

That doesn’t mean Romero and Co haven’t made mistakes but Dier is the catalyst and anyone that’s played the game, particularly in a backline will see this 👍🏻

Think of it this way:

If Eric Dier was the main defender on the other sides’ defence when the teams are announced. Would you be worried, or would you think we now have a better chance?

No doubt we'll have news Levy has handed Dier a new 4 year contract soon...

Being a ball watcher is bad enough for a CB,
Being a slow defender that can only back off and hope to get in the way of any eventual shot is bad enough.
Lacking awareness of what's around you is bad enough.
Then add in the fact that this is supposed to be the organizer of your defence and he possesses all of the above attributes then the outcome is quite predictable.
If he comes up against any clever movement or any pace then he's run off or run past, or just backs off until they shoot/score or someone else comes to help.

He's the footballing equivalent of Sharknado; Initially it was quite funny, but with multiple sequels (= new deals on the horizon) the joke is sour now.
I'm just waiting for him to come out with Jedward in a few weeks...:cautious:

He didnt get near enough to tackle him.

That's the whole point.

He never does. His MO is to back off and back off until the attacker gets a shot off. With 3 CBs it should be possible to engage and have a bit of cover behind, but ours seem more interested in keeping their hands behind their backs than actually tackling.

I'm sure this is instruction for him to push into midfield to make a 3. When we went to 3 in midfield he didn't do it so much. If we want to press a centre back into midfield it makes more sense to put Romero there though. Dier is just too slow.
