Barcelona president Joan Laporta says “there are certain things the club can’t offer” after Lucas Bergvall chose to join Tottenham Hotspur instead of the Spanish side.
The 18-year-old midfielder has emerged as one of Europe’s most coveted prospects and it appeared he would be signing for Barcelona, but The Athletic reported yesterday he had instead opted to join Spurs.
Laporta said Barcelona had sent a formal proposal to Bergvall but claimed Tottenham’s offer was more lucrative.
“Everyone says he is a great player and Deco has been monitoring him for months,” Laporta said. “We have sent a formal proposal for him and are waiting for an answer. The English clubs have a lot of resources and sometimes it’s difficult for us to compete with them.
“We know Tottenham want him too and they offered way more money than we do. We have a lot of extremely talented 17-year-olds and there are certain things that we, as a club, can’t offer.”
Tottenham have an agreement in place with Bergvall’s club, Djurgarden, worth a fixed fee of approaching €10million (£8.5m, $10.9m) plus add-ons.
Bergvall is expected to fly to London today (Friday), which is his 18th birthday, to undergo a medical and sign a five-year contract.
A deal was almost done with Barcelona, only for Spurs to persuade Bergvall that his career should continue there.
Tottenham maintained a pursuit led by their Danish technical director Johan Lange and managed to convince Bergvall to opt for them, with a final decision made on Thursday night.
as if we offered more money than them. Their wage bill is the highest in the world.
