LIVERPOOL want Robbie Keane to wear their famous No 7 shirt next season.

Kop boss Rafa Benitez plans a £20million player-plus-cash offer involving wantaway striker Peter Crouch. But Tottenham have resisted the first tentative Anfield approach for striker Keane. Spurs told the Reds they would be wasting their time making a formal bid for the Irish ace.

That will not dissuade Benitez, who has decided a forward line of Keane and Fernando Torres is the key to an improved domestic campaign. Benitez is prepared to restructure his tactical plans to accommodate Keane by pushing Steven Gerrard back into his favoured central midfield role. Keane’s loyalty to Spurs will be tested now Benitez’s interest is public. The 27-year-old, who has been at White Hart Lane since 2002, is settled in North London.

Heroes

But he will be tempted at the prospect of Champions League football and the honour of taking the jersey of one of his boyhood heroes, Kenny Dalglish. Liverpool are the only English club which can tug so strongly at the ex-Leeds man’s heartstrings as he is known to be a supporter.

Despite an excellent relationship with the Spurs hierarchy, the possibility of a takeover will also be playing on his mind. England hitman Crouch, 27, may prove key to a deal but he is also a target for Portsmouth, Newcastle and Manchester City. Pompey had a £9m bid rejected earlier this week, while Toon hope the lure of playing alongside Michael Owen will give them an edge.

If former Spurs trainee Crouch does not fancy a move to his old club, Liverpool will look to buy Keane outright.

Complete bollocks methinks but it's a link never the less.

So Torres and Keane up front, Gerrard to CM, alongside Barry if they get him. Who would they play out wide? I think they are just "really desperate" to get rid of Crouch. Didn't Benitez publicly say we were really desperate to get rid of Defoe at one point? Maybe we should return the favour or ask for Mascherano.

Well if they really want Robbie I think tell them £25 million straight cash! We dont want Crouch as any part of the deal!

Not beyond the realms of possibility. Although we have a rapport buit up over six years, Keano may feel he has one more move in him and to a CL Club at that.

Never say never...

I'd accept a player plus cash deal for him. But it would leave us looking for a striker on short notice... oh wait I forgot we've been linked with Villa, Millito, Guiza, Crouch and Podolski to mention a few.

I could live with that, provided we spent it on someone in the World class bracket

i'm sure they wouldnt be able to afford keane and i wouldnt want crouch, it would be like watching england when he comes on, when we automatically become a long ball side

Like I said in front page, only for Torres or Gerrard and that ain't happening. Or cash plus Alonso, but he's Juve bound.

Slightly off topic, but I'm using this as justification for accepting a cash plus Mash deal.

Have you noticed how some players in the Euros clap and applaud the intention of the pass/ throughball even if it's execution is not great? Well I've noticed it a lot, and generally its in teams which have a good team spirt. Now Keano rarely appluads the intention but often berates the execution. He vocalises his disapproval and I do not think that is conducive to a good team spirit.

For this reason alone I do not like him as captain. As I've mentioned before he is a complainer not a complimentor.

The only player who complains more is Dawson. And what's worse is he's shit with it.

So, as much as I like Keano and I do, I would happily swap him for Mash and cash.

Can't say I would put him down as a moaner. In fact, he never stops smiling. Berba on the other hand.........

As for the rumour, obviously it's horlicks but Shabby or Javi would sweeten the blow.

Given our apparent interest in Capel for the LW position, it could well be that Dos Santos plays as the support striker for Berbatov/Bent/any other target man we buy. This would leave Keano on the bench and as much as he loves the club, we all know from previous occurrences he wouldn't like it too much! If this story were true :shrug:/:bs:, I could see the proposal interesting all parties. Keano's good but he's not world-class and £20m would be a good return, IMO. And as PT says, after 6 years at the club he may want a change for a bigger club despite his close ties with the club.

I don't think anyone wants Keano to go, but if that £20m from Liverpool can be used to get Villa then I think a lot of us will change our minds.
Dan Ashcroft has said that we are after another GK, another CB a winger/midfielder and a DM on top of what we've already signed.
But I don't think that precludes upgrades, ie Capel for Malbranque (it seems as Capel gets closer, Malbranque is now available for £4m which may mean that the Bentley deal is not off nor that Lennon will leave!)
I personally am not sure, in Keane we have a premiership proven striker who seems to be happy at spurs. With my ruthless hat on I would exchange Villa for Keane, but I like Keane, he's one of my favourite players and I would be sad to see him go.
I remember thinking when Villa was being mooted as a replacement for Berba that Villa is basically Keane with more pace (and possibly a more clinical finsher) so I doubted that he was being lined up as Berba's replacement.
Maybe he has been lined up, but as a replacement for Keane!?

 Eek :eek:mg:

If Rafa really wants Keano as the linking ACM (or second striker), it's a strange one from Liverpool's point of view. Trappatoni has called Keano as the "Irish Totti" and is playing him as the linking striker for Ireland. However, Juande immediately moved Berba into the linking striker role for Spurs and has played Keano further forward. So, according to the reports, Benitez is prepared to pay around £20 million to play Robbie in a role that Ramos has rarely played him in.

I also can't see where Gerrard would play if Keano was Liverpool's linking striker/ACM. The scousers ended the season playing 4-2-3-1, with Mascherano and Xabi Alonso as DMs, Kuyt & Babel/Benayoun as the wide AMs, Gerrard as ACM, and Torres as the lone striker.

Barry is surely seen as a straight replacement for Alonso, and I can't see Gerrard playing next to Mascherano (or Barry) in a DM position, so presumably he'd be shunted out to one of the wide AM positions - which Gerrard doesn't particularly like.

All in all, pretty strange.
